Yeah and then I think India is going to blow everyone out of the water, 1.4bn people with a crumbling health service and no ability to lockdown like China has

253 more deaths in New York, deaths rise to 1218 with a total of almost 67,000 cases now

Have you got a link for this change?

Sorry but I can't keep an eye on top of the minutia of reporting in every single country on the planet.

But why post about it then if you don't know...
I've only read a small part of the thread and last time i looked you were showing misleading videos off paris!!

The situation how the deaths were being reported in france was disscussed in all french media for 2 days last week. Their government has committed either last Thursday or friday to put up the real figures from monday on.

Heard Prince Charles is over it. Do you think they were given a small dose of a different strain. Seems a lot of important people getting it but not that ill.

plenty getting it and getting over it that we don't know about, many don't know they had it themselves. You are not going to hear about them unless they are famous.

Most people get mild versions of the disease. The rich and famous get tested quicker than the rest of us so we find out more of their cases. Even amongst the general population the kill rate is higher than preferred but not actually high enough that you would expect a lot of people with access to the best healthcare to die from it.

So, nursing home deaths will not be included either ?
Sorry don't know but it's a reasonable inference.

Heard it in passing on radio or TV within past hour possibly it was in context of the homes.

I don’t know why the Democrats don’t put him forward as a presidential candidate. He’s the best communicator I have ever seen on the political stage.

Because he dismissed Bill DeBlasio's call to quarantine New York until it was too late. Potentially costing the lives of thousands of more people than necessary.

Because I did know what the policy was.

You are saying it has changed. If so, great.

Have you a link that it's changed?

It would go some way to explain the jump in recorded deaths.

How do you explain the positive tests in all three cases?

90%+ of people who get it are getting over it and getting better and getting back to normal. Why should famous people be any different?

They are probably prescribed anti-virals, while most ordinary people not hospitalised have to cope with paracetamol.

The current measures rolled out across Europe may have already prevented the loss of 120,000 lives

The number being sought is the number of tests the labs in aggregate can process daily.

The qualifications you are citing, apply to any processing operation distributed over separate locations.

The usual method of dealing with them is establish maximum practical throughput per location, then in aggregate the fluctuations between locations can usually be expected to balance out.

Any significant deviations in throughput normally indicate/reflect a system failure.

Absence of information and obfuscation is what leads to rumour and fear, not seeking information/clarification.

That's difficult to estimate in the case of RT PCR. The lab analysis has roughly 5 main steps 1) book in of samples. 2) RNA extraction 3) cDNA synthesis 4) RT-PCR 5) analysis and results reporting. These are discrete steps and can be split over different days. e.g samples from late afternoon may have RNA extracted and stored in a -80C for the following day's shift. Alternatively finished cDNA may be held in a -20C freezer until a machine is free to conduct RT-PCR. The labs are generally overlapping all of these steps to maximise output, for example while a machine is running an RT-PCR plate for one set of patients the scientist may begin making another batch of cDNA from a different cohort. I'm not involved in covid-19 testing but I imagine the scientists who are are busy enough processing samples and analysing results without devoting time to figuring estimating how many tests they can do in a day for someone on boards.ie.

South Africa begins 'unprecedented' military-patrolled lockdown
"I send you out to go and defend our people against coronavirus," Ramaphosa said.

"This is unprecedented, not only in our democracy but also in the history of our country, that we will have a lockdown for 21 days to go out and wage war against an invisible enemy coronavirus," he said.

During South Africa's shutdown there will be no jogging, dog-walking or sale of alcohol across the country, which so far has the highest number of detected infections in sub-Saharan Africa at 927, with Ramaphosa projecting it could reach 1,500 "within a few days".

I love how they've banned the sale of alcohol. Didn't some people here call for that as well? There must be some pscyhological reason why prohibtion is such a feature of these lockdowns. Is is just the banal explanation that alcohol is bad for your health or something more?

Or maybe it’s just that his granny lived to be 101 and his mother and father are nearly 94 and nearly 99 respectively and have enjoyed extremely rude good health all their lives leading us to assume that he’s genetically programmed to fight these things off?

If New York was a country it would now be 5th in the world for total cases !

Very rough in the Big Apple as this virus causes carnage.

Also Spain has overtaken China in terms of total cases.

The same everywhere. Anyway key people in all areas of public life, politics medicine etc. should be at the top of the list for testing and treatment too.

France is not including deaths outside hospitals in it's figures (like nursing homes, homes etc).

    I don't know why.

There must be some practical reason for it.

    Article on France's reporting.

    • Hospital deaths are reported via a system called SI-VIC
    • Other deaths are reported via another system called CépiDC
    • Nursing home (Ehpad) deaths are not yet counted. A system to report them is currently being worked on.

Nursing homes should have been the first to lock down. I'm happy to say that the nursing home my mother works in was locked down fairly sharpish. Still a risk with the care workers going in and out obviously, but no visitors allowed.

My mother said if Corona got into the home it would just burn through it in days.

There was a norovirus outbreak (winter vomiting bug) a couple of years back and it took out 8 of the residents in a week.

They were the first to implement restrictions. They did it at the time without the backing of the government or the HSE. At the time the government and other professionals were telling the public not to make any decisions or something like that. The restrictions also came in at the time that other towns and villages were making up their own minds and cancelling their local parades. At the same time the WHO was recommending social distancing and there was a professional on the late late show telling the viewers not to panic and go out and enjoy life and don't hide away and essentially telling us to socialise.

That was around about the 5th/6th of March.

It's very sad. The people were given four hours to plan before lockdown measures were enforced. Hundreds of thousands clambered across each other vying for access to transport home. Many are resigned to walking hundreds of kilometres back to their villages and some have died doing so. There's not enough food provisioned to feed the homeless men, women and children.
