Where will you get your parts? This idea of essential and nonessential really doesnt make sense

Would have plenty of parts at home. Just wondering if I get a phone call to say someone has no power in sockets or heating is not working or something then would that be considered a essential service to go fix them?
Then again do I really want to be going into someone else's house now, but on the other hand I'd hate to see someone stuck with no power.

That's a fair point. But I'm sure there is a lot of sparks in the country that wont be as lucky as you to have everything needed to carry out there job... while I think you should be considered essential. What's to say your parts provider isnt?

Updated list here BUT I still can’t be sure if they are going to amend it... as it only lists retailers???

It also says those stores must observe physical distancing but also says we should only go out for food and medicine? So do I go to B&Q to get repair materials - or am I not allowed out with the exception of food/medical.

I’m all for these measures but the info is contradictory

No mention of what types of manufacturing/construction which is essential?

Regarding your 10k run/walk or 40k cycle. Many say they are living in isolated rural areas. Ok I'm very familiar with that, my home place is above as isolated as you can get.

However why not look on it as an exercise in self discipline to adhere by the guidelines? It is lent after all... It's all me, me, me my routine, I want to stay in shape etc.

It's also very easy to organise circuit training in your garage or garden with free weights, core exercises. You can run the perimeter of the circle within a 2k radius, over 12k.

    I think that's due later....

They will certainly have to clarify what's essential/non-essential.

Exactly - I’m in a printers, luckily 2km from my gaff. We print a lot of material for HSE, med-tech and similar companies. Could be argued essential, especially as we had orders yesterday for Covid-19 specific medication records, but the list in gov.ie ONLY includes retail!

As I’ve said in earlier posts, I’m all for this LEO.CKDOWN - I own that phrase now - but the info is contradictory

    https://m.independent.ie/world-news/coronavirus/two-metres-not-enough-when-social-distancing-39083182.html

An article about the 2 metres distancing, which thus far I have found to be a pragmatic recommendation rather than scientifically accurate. And so it is.
    Quote -
"a new analysis by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US has found that viral droplets expelled in coughs and sneezes can travel in a moist, warm atmosphere at speeds of 10-30 metres (33ft-100ft) per second, creating a cloud that can span approximately 7-8 metres (23ft-27ft)"

"The researchers also warn that droplets can stay suspended in the air for hours, moving along airflow patterns imposed by ventilation or climate-control systems.

Virus particles have already been found in the ventilation systems of hospital rooms of patients with coronavirus, which the team believes could have been carried on "turbulent clouds" of air."

Will the bins be collected? I assume in cities, yes. But the private companies that service rural areas?

We'll see when they release the list, but Id imagine bins are essential. Other than that, check your provider?

    Question.

Company I work for supplies pallets. We supply to every place.

We have machines and tool equipment plus a good few staff. Let's say we could be considered essential for shops like lidl aldi etc to continue business.

If we need a spare part for our machines but the engineers are closed. What is considered essential?

While I think safe distancing and extra precautions is great. I cant get my head around what's considered essential and nonessential

    Talk to your manager

I work in another county all week and normally go home on Friday but this week had to stay here last night so am not at home now.

My wife is home alone but is fine and well. Could I make the trip home today to be with her do you think? It's 200km away, am in my own car?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,918 ✭✭✭Hooked

You would think that the updated list on gov.ie would give us some clue (workplaces) as to what’s happening outside of retail...

Is it just ‘essential’ retail that will operate? Nothing else.

Or is a list of manufacturers/other services to follow...

Because it ain’t clear, either way!!!

Jesus H Christ, the 2km thing is not relevant if you have to work in an essential service.

The list will be published later. I'd suggest talking to your manager.

I'm sorry to hear that Ireland insists on following Italy's example and go with the Soft Lockdown.
Isn't this the 3rd major announcement of containment measures within a week or 2?

Every successive measure is an admission the previous restrictions failed to flatten the curve.

Reminder: when the Chinese Red Cross arrived to Italy to help, they raised alarm about the lax Lockdown: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnJF6NmXT74

Who the hell writes these leaflets, they clearly don't comprehend difference between retailers and service providers, one section refers to Retailers who provide electrical, IT services, call outs. We are an electrical contractor who provide services only, not retail of any sort. We are on the OPW list, we also provide electrical services for Petroleum outlets, so presumanly we can still provide these as we would be expected to contractually. However our site works are more than likely closed . I understand that it is all being rushed under the circumstances but still for clarity they should have clearly distinguished between retailers and service providers its not like Revenue don't ???

The news only broke last night. Explain you were at work when it broke and this is the first chance you’ve had to move. Can’t see anyone with even half a brain turning you around.

    Drive safe.

It's ridiculous that they held a presser to start lockdown when they were not prepared with the information they needed to issue.

Depressing situation, I wish I could just go to bed and wake up in 2 months.

I'd say there's loads of us in bed right now and we don't know if we have to get up in the next few minutes.

    Very pretty.

I've been tempted to go there myself, even more tempted to go to the graveyard down by the lakeshore to the right of picture 2 to put flowers on my mother's grave for mother's day, but guess what, I didn't because public health comes first and I don't want to to risk infecting anyone else.

There are houses behind some of those hedges, there are nursing homes in the towns at the end of that snowy road (and the Lodge, with the most vulnerable). I know people who work there and I fear for their health, mental and physical. I live in the other direction, and know of three people with positive diagnoses.

Don't be a prat. The Graves, and the townland named for a Bronze Age plague burial, will still be there when all this is over.

2 km is plenty - those of us lucky enough to live near beauty, or to have gardens, should be grateful and humble.

You must live in a city. Nice theory, you should try walking 14.56 km in wellies.

I saw your earlier appeal to the example of those who fought in wars. My father did just that in WW2, and I know he wouldn't have stopped at 2km, which I won't be doing either, because your whataboutry in claiming such activity is a threat to the well being of nurses is sanctimonious pig swill. I will take any and all measures that are sensible and which might possibly make a difference.

See anyone to infect or be infected by?:

    I'll continue my walks.

    Talk to your manager

Not sure I understand. How is a manager to know at this point in time if suppliers of even the smallest piece of equipment is needed until it's broken and needed? Spares might be there for some thing that break regular but not for absolutly everything...

Anyways my point is. Where does essential and nonessential begin and end ?
