Not surprising. Their neighbour's house is on fire. Hopefully just smoke damage.

musing on this - if I am at home with my wife, and I have a tiny bit of a cough and a very minor sore throat on and off, and my wife is fine, if it was corona would she not have it by now (assuming noT asymptomatic), or is it safe to say that it isn't therefore corona. If that makes sense! (No fever)

It's not an absolute guarantee that you would infect your wife with coronavirus if you had it - there's a good chance, but no guarantee at all. She / you may also be asymptomatic and infective.

    UK health secretary has coronavirus

Was that not reported a while ago or is this another member?

Edit: minister for health (Dorries) was the earlier case I was thinking of

Firstly, he suggested that we should give up testing for covid and forget contact tracing, which is just totally wrong at this point. To slow the spread we need good testing and isolation protocols in line with South Korea, Singapore, China and Taiwan.

He was suggesting we should move to antibody testing at this stage which makes absolutely no sense, we have literally 5 people confirmed people who have recovered from the illness compared to nearly 2,000 people confirmed sick. Sick people generally show symptoms so are easier to identify. How at this point are we going to go about finding the bare few people who have had and recovered from the virus and what good does it do us?

He then apparently advocated a two tier system whereby recovered people go about their daily lives where the rest stay locked up. Impossible to manage and provides an incentive for people to get the virus for their 'pass'.

Finally he said Africa was the place to watch. A continent with by far the lowest population of elderly and a place where they already grapple with all manner of deadlier diseases and causes of death. It is countries like India, Turkey, Mexico and Brazil that are the places to watch, granted a few North African states will suffer badly.

He was touting vaccines by September and Trump's favourite untested drug a week ago, he's touting some antibody transfer system this time around.

    He is simply infuriating.
At least he's moved on from his nothing much to see here views on the virus from Februrary

People in leadership positions need to work from home where possible.

Looking towards Leo and Simon Harris. Surely Govt can do their business online.

That includes media interviews. It is not a time we need to have key people getting unwell.

The junior health minister had it, but as far as I know, is recovered now.

Yea, I'm conscious that I haven't seen any posts from Graces7 for a while, given her underlying conditions I too am concerned by her silence. Fervently hoping she's ok out there in on her atlantic island.

I emailed her earlier and checked her blog. She posted something 3 days ago so maybe she has just taken a break from boards for awhile.

    Fingers crossed shes OK.

I was chatting with Graces on PM a few weeks ago and at the time I dont think people were realizing on this Covid19 thread how insensitive it was to suggest Older people should just stay in doors and life should go on for the rest of us. I couldn't believe the arguments I was having with people talking about basically "old people being old so they are gonna die anyways, why should the economy suffer" kind of discussions.

Really was so sad to see people being so dismissive of the older/vulnerable population. But its good to see a more united and empathetic approach being shown by most at this stage.

    Our testing approach is different.

We closed things down 10-14 days ahead of them That's more than slight.
    Testing strategy also very different.

Their population is denser than ours so that time difference is huge and given the virus more time to multiply among the masses.

Ireland has not shown any signs of a herd immunity approach.

Time will tell but I predict the death rate per 100,000 people will be much larger in the UK than here.

Right I've chosen a country with a similar population size to Ireland New Zealand: So New Zealand have 368 cases 0 deaths and 37 recovered

Ireland has 1,819 cases 19 deaths 5 recovered.

What have Ireland done wrong? New Zealand should close their boarders to Ireland as it is clearly out of control there.

Nadine Dorries. Notable for her history of very woolly takes on health and science overall.

Can someone explain to me why people are going about the place wearing gloves. Ok, you might want to keep your hands clean but why did I see someone wearing gloves and smoking a fag at the same time? Are people really that clueless? It's hand washing and not touching your face is the most important thing to be doing.

More travel/transit in and out of here. Even if its short term trips.

Kiwi people don't have a Northern Italy close by.

Would love to be a fly on the wall at the testing lab when Mr. Tubridy's test results come in........

You'd certainly get more than you bargained for swabbing the noses of most RTE personalities. The resale value might make it worthwhile doing a targeted mass screening there.

New Zealand is a lot more isolated than Ireland with much less travel to and from there.

Smoking is defeating the purpose , reason why lot of people wear gloves is to give themselves 1 more layer of protection. Fair enough washing is fine if you can get to a sink with hot water and soap or sanitizer after coming out of very shop. And if done properly it works.
No gloves - you go into shop you touch stuff that might be infected, you come out and get into your car and transfer whatever and then when you get into the house same and then you need to wash hands, steering wheel etc.
Gloves - you shop you remove gloves properly and anything you may have picked up stays on the gloves.

    Dont panic,

what we should be doing is letting them home but into strict quarantine for 2 weeks when they arrive.

Not a snowball`s chance in hell of that happening.

Saw a lady yesterday exiting supermarket with gloves on. Stopped to answer her phone. Shortly after, she returned the trolley, discarded gloves, sanitised hands, jumped in her car, and back on the phone. Anyone see the problem here?

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has warned that intensive care units may be at capacity "within a few days".

Mr Varadkar said he was concerned about admission rates to intensive care and said there was an unprecedented effort being made by the health services.

Kiwi people don't have a Northern Italy close by.

Or a UK or a Spain or a France or more then one country that many of its population visit regularly. Australia is so sparsely populated, its hardly comparable with some of Europes biggest citys.

Not just that, the political fallout of closing borders with Northern Ireland are bigger then people are making out. It could do untold damage to the Northern relations.

And then there is our relationship and free movement agreements within the EU. I am not sure how well it would go down if we arbitrarily made big decisions that could impact other communities.

I like the way our authorities have closed things down in stages and taken extra steps/decisions as they felt were needed. I feel this whole "they should close everything or stop all flights" is kind of panic talk, particularly if this is going to go on for months or maybe even a year or two. There is no benefit to closing every single thing (including flights from everywhere) if we are going to have to have scattered openings and closures over the next 18 months.
