For Danni Askini’s first trip to the hospital in Boston on Feb. 29, for example, she was charged $1,804 for her emergency room visit and another $3,841.07 for “hospital services.”

Sorry, it was this figure that was sticking in my head.

I'm baffled at the number of Americans on Twitter saying that it's going to be ok because they have more cases than Italy but far fewer deaths.

I don't think they understand how this virus works...I genuinely fear that in two weeks time the US is going to be a world of trouble with Covid 19.

This really is the huge problem with this disease.

Also, more ventilators aren't much good without properly trained staff.

Well, one thing is for sure - nobody is laughing at those American "preppers" now , with their shacks in the mountains with 6 months worth of food.

I am. Society is still functioning and food deliveries are still happening. Still no zombies, people dying of hunger, but a ton of ghastly tinned food and rations to get through.

Italy: +6,153 new cases/+662 additional deaths.

Seems to be stabilising? New cases up on yesterday but not dramatically.

About 20 fewer deaths than yesterday, but it's actually a bit of a rise in the percentage of new cases based on those figures. I mean it's not a huge increase, but it's still going the wrong way, hopefully it's just a daily variance which could be down to increased testing.

I think there may be a fear that the virus is starting to spread in southern Italy.

Something else I was thinking about recently was that I've been fixated on this 14 day point from when the lockdown started, but this doesn't take into consideration the spread of the virus within households, that could still be significant for another 14 days, it may actually take 4-5 weeks for a lockdown to really take effect.

That PPE order from China is humongous- total cost of €200m! 10 flights alone just to get the first batch at €30m here from Sunday. Total of about 300 flights needed between now and the end of May.

And South Italy has been in lockdown for 2+ weeks now, I don't know how the spread is getting worse there ...

Its not, they've stabilised it, there's no trajectory in terms of deaths, not for Italy anyway.

Never heard of this movie. 1971. Lots of similarities.

Don't look if you do not like movies about outbreak.

I saw that movie when I was about 9 on TV somewhere and I just remember it scared the absolute hell out of me. I wouldn't suggest watching it if you've a concern about this outbreak.

England only had 28 deaths yesterday, but there was a reason for that as Kate McCann of Sky News points out:

    Kate McCann
    @KateEMcCann
For those asking/concerned about PHE figures on covid-19 deaths and why the number yesterday was low/why the way it is reported has changed, here is some more information:

NHS has been providing figures to PHE on covid deaths by 9am every day and PHE then publishing stats at 2pm. That was the intention. But as deaths rise it has become difficult to collate and verify the numbers in time.

That has led to figures being published after the 2pm deadline. To get on top of this, PHE and NHS have decided to change the time these numbers are reported to allow more time to check they're all correct.

Importantly, the way the deaths are collated has not changed, only the time. [I am still waiting to hear what the new cut off time is, and the new publishing time].

As a result, yesterday's death stats looked much lower than expected but unfortunately that was a crossover day when the times were being altered. So today the stats are likely to look far higher.

To give a more accurate picture (although I appreciate this is not ideal, stats experts) the suggestion is we add up the figures from yesterday and today and then divide by two to better understand what is happening.

There is also likely to be a note published later from officials to explain this formally, so that people can rest assured there is nothing funny going on with the numbers here.
