Forgive me. I'm not expressing it the right way. It's a fact under normal circumstances vested interests fund elections. If they had won last election with a majority I'm not sure we would see such decisive action in the public interest. I may well be cynical. The country's last election saw a massive swing to the left. The outgoing government is acutely aware of this.

Events are dictating action. I can envisage a situation where there are decisions to be made where there is a diametrically opposing opinions between business and public health interests.

In that scenario the shackles are off and the government is acting with purpose in the interest of public health.

I thought FG acted with integrity post-election -they said -ok we lost, we get the message so we'll become the opposition and the other 125 TDs can work it out among themselves. I didn't get the impression that anyone else were busting their butt to get into government even before the virus appeared as a presence in the country.
What could the outgoing government do ? Would they be have been thanked if they resigned en masse ? Could they resign now and say -actually folks we realise that we don't really have a proper electoral mandate to stay in office -so we're off -good luck with the virus thingy.

Thought that Dr Holohan was showing the signs of strain at tonight's DOH presser. A bit spiky I thought with his answers. Any thoughts?

I’ve been involved first hand this week again in a large hospital in Ireland. I’ve seen approx 60 patients with covid or ? Covid. I know some people here will scoff and call me a HSE shill and think I’m a wanker etc, but....

The effort we are making (As we should) is ****ing massive. This week we treated 2 patients with expensive experimental trial drugs and they both are cautiously improving. People are being flexible accommodating and generally sound to work with. I said initially that we really do have some fantastic docs here. I stand by that. There is a unique Irish balance of attitude, practicality, common sense and surprising smartness that we hide a lot of the time.

I sincerely hope it’s not a false optimism but I genuinely strive for us to look back at this and say we threw absolutely everything at it and we will compare favourably when we are looking back with the benefit of hindsight. It’s early early days. But we need to stop the exponential phase. Everybody needs to work really really hard at it.

    Thank You

Doubt many people are travelling in fairness. Roads are empty in Dublin
It would have happened, the travel, before all this kicked off.

So disingenuous comparing it to influenza testing with the 40%.

The damage wrought by this disease is orders of magnitude greater. Given it is more contagious and has a 20X greater death rate.

i.e it's worth getting more negatives. Hence the WHO advice that we are now going against.

Two assumptions, correct me if I'm wrong:

    1) Recovery numbers aren't being reported because the majority are self-isolating at home, and nobody is keeping track.

    2) ICU Number of 39 is total to date, there's less than that in ICU right now.

Also Italy are heavy smokers do there be lung damage there.

Maybe, but respiratory illness seems to be less of a factor in the fatal cases than diabetes and cardiac issues. I think the figure was something like 16% of fatal cases being related to respiratory problems, despite it being a common symptom. An average of 4 extra years of life across the population would make for a much larger pool of vulnerable people.

Diabetes and heart failure are huge issues in the US, so that might become a problem if they hit capacity on their ICU beds.

I wonder as well, since NYC is the hub in the US- the population in the city will tend to be much younger than even the US average.

Boris will be looking to see what % of the population he can get back to work ASAP with those home testing kits.

It shouldn’t and certainly doesn’t for me take a Once in a lifetime Event like this for me to appreciate the work that healthcare professionals in this country do. I’ve been hospitalised many times, and the nursing care I have received is exemplary, I’ve been to maternity hospitals and an older experienced midwife is the greatest thing you can hope for at that stage in your life, and we have loads who have delivered thousands of babies, reared their own and walk new mothers through the process with Confidence and assurance.

The issue with healthcare in this country has never been with the front line.

Hopefully you steer clear of it, because it’s healthcare workers that are getting the brunt of this.

Several stories on the news of people purposely coughing in other people's faces for a laugh? Is this for real? People like that need to be rounded up and culled.

If somebody does that to me, given the current situation, I am taking it as a threat against my life (and my family's lives) and will be letting the fists fly (even on teenagers).

What are people's thoughts on these stories and how are they planning on reacting if this situation happens to them?
I always carry an umbrella, if someone coughed in my face my reaction naturally would be to quickly bring both hands to my face...Now your Honour, how was I to know that this natural reaction would result in my brolly sweeping upwards quickly and the aluminium end sharpened and pointed by many years of walking would slice the scobies face from chin to scalp! When I took my hands down all I saw was this cretin covered in blood wailing and in fear of my life I brought said brolly down rapidly on his head in one single sweep...mea cupla...he died that night, the poor ignorant wretch...what a pity. My brolly was bent...but next day I had a steel rod put in to replace the aluminium one, I believe in upcycling.

This is an important figure to get right.

Its changing every day. ICU public beds are one figure but another critical figure is how many people we can ventilate outside the ICU essentially making temporary ICU beds. This is limited by staff and ventilators but we are working hard on both. We will be able to ventilate far far more than just the static status quo ICU bed numbers if the time comes.

Could we still get overwhelmed, yep. But we can work hard and hope. Every delay to exponential growth and every contact that stops happening is a help.

Its does seem that italy has a high death rate when it comes to the flue. Well over 1% when the USA has about 0.1% so there may be something else going on in Italy.

It’s completely pointless comparing statistics from different countries. Each of them must be counting in different ways. Germany’s number of deaths seems incredibly low. Maybe they are just counting deaths where Covid is the principal cause of death whereas others are including deaths where Covid is just a contributory cause.
The only way we will ever know is much further down the line where the official statistics will show by how much deaths increased during the epidemic. It may be that the number could be a lot less than was reported as being due to Covid.

Can't believe there are little knackers coughing in peoples faces. I hope everyone is on the same page with regards to this that is that if it happens you lamp them. No other way of dealing with that ****e could be a matter of life or death for your parents or elderly relatives.

I think a lot of the positive action by the government. I think this stems from the fact that they effectively lost the last election.
They see it as an opportunity to win the next one / national security.
I obviously can't speak to the motive but fair play to them.

Look what's happening in UK and US. Keep business going, oh wait do shut down. Oh how long can this go on.

They are all under extreme pressure from their main financial backers to get things going at the soonest opportunity.
They are heeding the public health advice and gambling essentially that it will pay off when this blows over.

They didn't have my last vote but if we get through this better than most countries they will have my vote.

    Resign? Are you serious.

I'm glad they are there and I'm glad of the measures they are taking.

HSE press conferences are a different story.

If large swathes of the population is already have already been infected is there any point in widespread testing? Boffins in Oxford suggest over 50% for Britons have contracted the virus, many already have recovered.
