I think a lot of the positive action by the government. I think this stems from the fact that they effectively lost the last election.

What nonsense and in fairness to FG, they have a long history of being the party who presided over helping the country out of huge economic and national crises.

I wonder have they been able to do more test yet? 230 if they've increased test is a good sign.

    235. extra 2 deaths, and now 39 in ICU.

    ☹️

    RIP

    39 in ICU ☹️

A strong improvement in Ireland's debt position is €50,000 of debt per head of population? New Zealand has debt of 'only' €17,500 per head of population.
It's a dubious stat, more used to be used to shock people. All about how manageable debt repayment is. The point is we will be able to borrow at low costs whatever we might need.

I think the poster was asking how many in ICU at present. I see that it`s 39, an increase of 5 from yesterday`s figure.

Cases in US now surpass 60,000, with 838 deaths

    Highest state case totals:

    • New York: 30,811
    • New Jersey: 3,675
    • California: 2,626
    • Washington: 2,469
    • Louisiana: 1,795
    • Michigan: 1,791
    • Illinois: 1,535

That's, what, a 1.3% death rate vs. Italy's 11%? I guess it could be worse for the U.S.

The last thing we need now is a change of government right smack in the middle of this crisis.

Its not exactly a change in fairness. I say for now Leo (or both together) well stay as figurehead and all those departments with out a minister will get one and once we get a hold on this then they will do the changes

They didn't have my last vote but if we get through this better than most countries they will have my vote.

Housing, healthcare, homeless, greed, failure etc etc. All but a distant memory in the mind of the fickle public.

The positive is average number of community infections per case has gone from 20 to 5 people.

It seems we are abiding by the social distancing rules.

What is the story behind the recovery rate number. I cant believe that as few as 5 people have recovered of those positively diagnosed

The HSE don't actually announce recoveries (probably not a priority for them)

Depends what the criterion for recovered is. If a negative test is required then the low numbers would be due to recovered patients not being retested.

So now you can't get tested unless you're seriously struggling to breathe and/or in a critical condition

I do have to laugh at the "He is independent, has no agenda or seek personal gain. His videos don’t even had ads enabled Nd he could be making a nice chunk of money off that with youtube" line.

YouTube demonitizes' anything on coronavirus, and he has a PayPal in his video descriptions

How is his independence a source of humour?
You can’t trust any news report from the US because they are either completely behind or completely against trump.
    RTE won’t criticise anyone ever.
The BBC go out of their way to be politically correct.

This guy gives his opinion on things, I don’t agree with all of it, but at least he’s one some side.

What’s he using his PayPal money for? Do you know?

How many tests did they do? The fact it’s stayed fairly consistent the last few days may just reflect the current testing limit, right?

Very unlikely. The change in eligibility criteria starting today may increase detection numbers though.

    What is ICU?

    Intensive care unit.

For those in a very bad way health wise like after cat crashes who need extra, special care in the hospital.

How many icu beds are there available in total?

We have or will shortly the capacity to ventilate 600 - 700 or so patients. Final logistics still being worked on. 270 or so public. 200 private. Then it goes to theatre / war zone mode with more vents coming all the time.

We need to stop the exponential growth. That’s the key.

The success of America's response will be determined by how much influence and power Dr. Fauci and Dr. Birx have in that whitehouse.

Trump appears to have backpeddled his comments about wanting to open up the economy by easter after those two doctors reportedly had a 'stern' meeting with Trump in the Oval Office yesterday.

Thankfully the governors have more power than Trump in all of this, for as long as he follow orders from Dr. Fauci and Dr. Birx and competent governors like Andrew Cuomo are in charge America might be OK.

There are many other layers of government and personal other than Trump.

As far as I know it’s 255 but I think with taking over private hospitals it is now more

I stand to be corrected on this

Even I'm not that cynical. I believe the Government are acting strictly in interests of public, they deserve benefit of the doubt.

Forgive me. I'm not expressing it the right way. It's a fact under normal circumstances vested interests fund elections. If they had won last election with a majority I'm not sure we would see such decisive action in the public interest. I may well be cynical. The country's last election saw a massive swing to the left. The outgoing government is acutely aware of this.

Events are dictating action. I can envisage a situation where there are decisions to be made where there is a diametrically opposing opinions between business and public health interests.

In that scenario the shackles are off and the government is acting with purpose in the interest of public health.
