    What is ICU?

    Intensive care unit.

For those in a very bad way health wise like after cat crashes who need extra, special care in the hospital.

We have or will shortly the capacity to ventilate 600 - 700 or so patients. Final logistics still being worked on. 270 or so public. 200 private. Then it goes to theatre / war zone mode with more vents coming all the time.

We need to stop the exponential growth. That’s the key.

That's, what, a 1.3% death rate vs. Italy's 11%? I guess it could be worse for the U.S.

The success of America's response will be determined by how much influence and power Dr. Fauci and Dr. Birx have in that whitehouse.

Trump appears to have backpeddled his comments about wanting to open up the economy by easter after those two doctors reportedly had a 'stern' meeting with Trump in the Oval Office yesterday.

Thankfully the governors have more power than Trump in all of this, for as long as he follow orders from Dr. Fauci and Dr. Birx and competent governors like Andrew Cuomo are in charge America might be OK.

There are many other layers of government and personal other than Trump.

As far as I know it’s 255 but I think with taking over private hospitals it is now more

I stand to be corrected on this

Even I'm not that cynical. I believe the Government are acting strictly in interests of public, they deserve benefit of the doubt.

Forgive me. I'm not expressing it the right way. It's a fact under normal circumstances vested interests fund elections. If they had won last election with a majority I'm not sure we would see such decisive action in the public interest. I may well be cynical. The country's last election saw a massive swing to the left. The outgoing government is acutely aware of this.

Events are dictating action. I can envisage a situation where there are decisions to be made where there is a diametrically opposing opinions between business and public health interests.

In that scenario the shackles are off and the government is acting with purpose in the interest of public health.

And will be for a while to come after this - all low priority compared to getting through this and getting jobs back.

It'll be next week before the social distancing takes any real effect on numbers, ICU nbers are the real ones to watch, they get to high and where in serious trouble

The 39 in ICU is the amount who “ required ICU”.
So I would imagine because 9 have died sadly and it’s possible some may have gone to another ward out of ICU.
There would be less than 39 in ICU currently.
So probably 30 max in ICU currently.

Depends what the criterion for recovered is. If a negative test is required then the low numbers would be due to recovered patients not being retested.

Thats what I assumed. Absent that test, the recovery number is meaningless, and the the total number of cases should be read as cumulative cases, rather than total active cases. I would be interested in a number that shows the total number who are actually sick at this moment. Otherwise the only tangible number is the death rate

After seeing the trolley numbers today I'm starting to think they are all exaggerated and really just morons fault.

    Personal responsibility.

So now you can't get tested unless you're seriously struggling to breathe and/or in a critical condition

God forbid if you or someone you know is ever in that position, ring an ambulance immediately and you won't be long getting tested after that.

I was under the impression that the number of tests was to be increased this week. Have a family member waiting for results from a test on Monday. His dr has said they're expecting Sunday's results tomorrow so IF the number of tests went up on Monday there may be a bigger increase from Friday...

    Another good initiative.
A new website has been launched here to connect companies or other organisations who may have excess stock of personal protective equipment (PPE) with hospitals and healthcare facilities around the world.

Several stories on the news of people purposely coughing in other people's faces for a laugh? Is this for real? People like that need to be rounded up and culled.

If somebody does that to me, given the current situation, I am taking it as a threat against my life (and my family's lives) and will be letting the fists fly (even on teenagers).

What are people's thoughts on these stories and how are they planning on reacting if this situation happens to them?

I'd be cautiously optimistic the 700 will never be utilised : that would bring us up into the area of 35000 positive cases or something.

The positive is average number of community infections per case has gone from 20 to 5 people.

It seems we are abiding by the social distancing rules.

These figures were mentioned yesterday. My understanding of the figures were that they were in relation to the contact tracing. As in each person diagnosed, had approx. 20 contacts and now contact tracing is slightly slimmer with approximately 5 contacts per diagnosed person.

You'd have to imagine that there was a certain element of panicky eejits running to the doctor because they woke up the morning after skulling a slab of bavaria with a headache and demanded their GP to bump them up to the top of the queue.

Of course, only a minority, but if you had 1000 a people a day doing this and making genuine cases wait, then it would have had to be stopped

Yes they had to be referred by a GP but sure the GP would make that determination over the phone based on what the person told them.

By the same measure, expect a few of them who want a test tomorrow to ring up and say they have a temperature

Of course everyone should be tested, but we all know that there will be me-feiners trying to jump any queue they can, even though they are not priority at all.
Whereas there will then be genuine cases struggling at home and not wanting to bother anyone :(
