If we have truly ran out of PPE in our hospitals then the number of patients admitted is not accurate bear in mind hospitals have cancelled elective surgeries and our casualty dept are the quietest they've ever been

There are people who are dying in Spain and Italy, because there is no ventilator to give them!

We have less ventilators than the european average.

That could be us in a few weeks, if things turn bad here...

In all these cases, the rate limiting step is trained HCPs, not the number of ventilators.

How does this compare to other pandemics in history in spreading. 450000 in 4 months.

We never had proper counts like this before I would imagine.

I wish it was a rumor, its direct from someone working there im afraid.

That's still a rumour and very different to what my daughter is seeing every day in the hospital she nurses in.

Contrast the Irish governments apparent innaction with the German governments. who's health system is in a vastly better position then the HSE, to start with:

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-03-09/germany-faces-backlash-from-neighbors-over-mask-export-ban

    And India:

    And France:

Irish government doesn't mind health workers potentially dying in this country while companies are seemingly allowed to export life saving protective equipment.

This isn't a surprise. How many people here were homeless while we were taking in refugees from the middle East.

I read comment here yesterday that during the famine people here died of hunger while we gave away food to other countries.

In all them years, not much has changed.

Yeah for example the city of Brescia in Italy has around the same population as Cork but around twice the population density. Its much more likely to spread if there are a lot of apartment blocks, people sharing elevators and handrails in stairways etc. That's why I think Ireland is being spared the huge increases in transmission.

Who would have thought that our urban sprawl of ugly semi detached houses would end up being to our benefit....

PPE is probably been changed more often, doctors/nurses usually only change gloves for example for each patient they see, it's probably a full scrubs (plus mask which was not previously always worn) change now for each patient, also extra PPE required for the various testing centres as well as for example nursing homes or other areas where use was not previously high.

Its fact as its direct from an employee in this particular hospital, not saying all hospitals are the same, far from a rumor im afraid to say.

That is entirely the governments fault for not reigning in sue for the moon, years ago.

I don’t think anyone is arguing it isn’t but it’s also in some ways cultural in the common law type legal systems. Going to law seems to be a solution to everything with punitive damages payments being the only remedy.

We should have more arbitration systems and also better regulation. A lot of it is about using threat of law suit in lieu of proper regulation and oversight.

It’s very much part of anglophone legal culture and laissez faire mentality around how to regulate.

There’s going to have to be some kind of legal protection put in place for present circumstances or I’m sure there’ll be a mess in the years to come.

Hi lads looking for a bit of clearing up here. If your not showing the 2 main symptons and were told to isolate while waiting for a test. Should you continue to self isolate if you dont meet new criteria but have one of the 2 main symptons?

In an effort to identify and share real news, instead of conjecture, this is interesting, and shows the importance of social distancing over and above anything else.

If you have a whisper of a suspicion that you have it, the only sensible thing to do is to isolate.

Heck, the whole idea of the lockdown is that you treat yourselves and others like ye all have it regardless.

yes, they need to prioritize testing the people with a greater chance of testing positive till they can clear the backlog ,you still have a responsibility to isolate

Christ, as depressing and all as the overall situation is, this thread and the majority of the posts would put anyone whos very low completely over the edge. Any sort of half arsed bad news story is grabbed by some posters and put up in lights so they can have a **** over the misery they are trying to spread.

I know. I think theres going to have to be a point where we realise that we are different to other countries and start to look at how our population density can allow us reduce restrictions going forward.

In all these cases, the rate limiting step is trained HCPs, not the number of ventilators.

    That's not what I've heard...

Machines are being prioritised for younger patients, because they don't have enough of them to go around.

But I'm sure they run out of everything, when a hospital is pushed to breaking point.

We're already running out of PPE, and this thing has only just started for us!

If PPE can run low at this point, I have no doubt we could run out of ventilators or other important equipment too. We already know this, as ICU doctors have said it in recent weeks!
