It’s not an either/or situation. We have to strike a balance. What are we going to do if a new strain of flu emerges next winter? Shut down the economy again? Covid-19 is not going away anytime soon, if ever. We just have to manage it like all the other health threats that exist around us all the time.

Have you watched TV at all in the last month ?

The whole idea is to stop this peaking at the moment or end up with it totally out of control (Italy ) ,

Literally the most important thing at the moment is stop the spike , We can think about the economy after that ,

Why is Simon Harris still in a job??

3 weeks ago he told us all that we were not at risk of the Pandemic that we now have.

Yet he is still in his job, that We are paying for!

Call for him to be replaced!!!

Absolutely disgraceful what's happening today. I have been showing symptoms sweating and coughing my lungs hurt so much. Told I have to reply for test. Waiting 5 days already. Had Pneumonia 12 months ago and have underlying autoimmune disorder.

That's a disgrace. Hoping you feel better soon.

Is it compared to our population level? That is good news if that is the case and I would be optimistic that we may have this under control if there is not a big increase. If this goes well for Ireland Leo Varadkar will go down in history for leading us through this.

Yes, it is when you compare the number of people who have the virus vs the number of people who have died in the respective countries. For both Ireland and Germany it is around 0.5% so far. Figures from here: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

Same as that. A lot of unnecessary cases blocking up the system.

Why don't they just come out and say that then?

    This is about massaging numbers.

Yet the hospitals will still be overwhelmed. That can't be hidden.

We were told everyone who was referred would be tested. We have spent a fortune on testing sites around the country.

Now we are told hardly anyone is going to be tested.

Great news, we'll only have a handful of cases.

If you don't test there is no problem by default. That's the theory anyway.

You've really got to wonder about all of the idiots who came back from Spain etc. Whether they've had the cop on to self isolate when they didn't have the cop on two weeks previous to not go abroad.
Spain is becoming a real European worry now. Some of that worry must be coming our way also.

Definitely a lot didn't. I was in a Tesco Extra the Friday the school's shut and the cashier remarked she was glad she went on her holiday when she did, came back from Barcelona on Sunday. Didn't seem to have a notion she might have caught it and shouldn't be working in close contact with the public. Had to bin all my uncovered veg as she had touched them.

Should all countries not be recording information in the same way so it is clear and consistent?

For example, if someone with asthma passes away from being infected with Covid19 is that not the cause of death as opposed to asthma? They would have been able to live with asthma so I don’t understand why this is being classified as cause of death

I would have thought people had to report deaths related that tested positive for Covid19.

    I would think so, too.

    it's not just Germany.

France is also not counting in the total number the elderly who have been dying in the nursing homes (EPHAD).

asking the EU to develop common guidelines to classify the deaths:

Yeah I know someone who is 100% sure he got Coronavirus over 2 weeks ago. He had all the symptoms and isolated himself completely. His GP told him he was on the testing list but he never got the visit despite several reminders to/by GP. He recovered ok and still has not been tested.

To put unnecesary strain on already strained services is what is irresponsible. Exactly what you are advocating here.

Still waiting to see significant flattening of the curve. For the past 10 days, the exponential growth in cases has been roughly constant with about 21% increase per day (used line fit on log of numbers). By start of April, there'll be about 900 or 1000 cases per day. Of course, some of this could be due to increased testing rates.

It's not so 'far' today...they announce their figures in the morning. That won't be updated until tomorrow at this time.

You are allowed leave the house even if you are in self isolation. You can go for a walk(s) on your own and you are not breaching your isolation (I was reading this yesterday in an explanation of what to 'self isolate' means). Quarantine is a different thing and is for people who have been confirmed to be sick.
check HSE please for the differences between self quarantine/restricted movements and self isolation.

About 10% of cases in every country seem to be health workers. Well they are around coronavirus patients all day but I would have thought their PPE would have prevented the infections
According to the press briefing last night 26% of current cases in Ireland are health care workers. That should be a reason for concern.

The testing is catching up atm, the measures we have put in aren't reflective of current numbers. The next 2 weeks will tell the bigger picture

That anyone with symptoms follows the HSE advice and self isolate and talk to your GP.

Don't go about your business and potentially spread the virus.

Some people have very mild symptoms and they need a doctor to decide if they are a risk.

kick your GP up the arse on this, what did they come back to on this

They are under enormous pressure on this, mistakes will be made but make sure they light a fire if you are in a bad way
