Question from a self employed person. A long shot but thought I'd ask.

If sales are way, way down but I've not completely stopped selling - can I apply for the €350 for now? Shutting everything down might harm my sales when I come back due to losing placement in the algorithm of the site I sell on. And it's so unpredictable as to when it will pick up again.

If we're still bringing in a trickle of income can we apply for this? All of the official info uses wording like "ceased trading" or "no longer earning" which leaves people like me hanging a bit in a grey area. This must apply to a lot of people though. Not everyone has had to stop completely.

I thought I read somewhere that if you income dropped by 25% you could apply. But I can't remember where I saw that.

Italy has banned people from cycling, jogging and closed all parks. People are still dying in their homes. And still people here are saying jogging is ok.

Maybe you should go for a run it will calm you down and release your stress,

Also, it's not in Italy but only Lombardy where it's a major crisis and the epicentre of the deaths.

So it makes complete sense to ban all sports (not just jogging which you have something against.)

A person going out for a run on their own is not doing any harm to anyone. Even if they breath on people in the 0.5 seconds it takes for them to pass by another pedestrian.

That was an extremely poor press conference.

Leo was about as clear as mud

They have just created a pretty large communications problem for themselves.

Perhaps the lockdown has slowed the virus?

Maybe we are learning from the other countries.
I dunno, a fragile green shoot. Fingers crossed!

As has been stated many times before the current number of stated positive cases is totally unreliable.

Loads of idiots out jogging in Rathmines. What part of “lockdown” do they not get?

Stay at home and buy groceries once a week! Even better, get it delivered!

    Army should declare martial law.

What is wrong with doing some exercise? Why should people stop? It doesn’t increase social contacting, isn’t prohibited by the new measures, and keeps people fit and healthy.

Although this thread isn't for politics could SF not give them some credit.

That was an embarrassment of an interview, we are in an unprecedented situation and all they can do is still throw digs and pull money out of nowhere.

Put the people first and at least acknowledge the measures before you try and out do and political point score.

I hope educated people dont forget this when its over . . Seems like its driving SF nuts to watch our outgoing government do such an exceptional job and really looking like the kind of leaders alot of countries are lacking... I would say there are populations in other countries quite envious of us at the moment....

I remember Dr Aylwards conference (Feb 25th) that really blew this open:

    - "Think the virus is going to show up tomorrow"
    - " There was a report that showed this virus would be in every province within 120 days"
    - "you take the approach, if this hits us we have to stop it. Dont act defeated" (UK/USA)
    - "You have got to have enough ventilater"
    - "You have to test"
    - "You have to talk to you populations. They gotta know you are going to take care of them"
    - "Talk to people who have done it, China have done it"
    - "Time is everything in this disease"
    - "Re-purposing of govnerment/resources as required worked for China"
    - " Everybody has to be involved and pulling in the same direction"
    - " Take a war footing to turn this around. Population needs to be highly sensitised to the issue"
    - "Average onset to symptoms before showing in hospital was 15 days"
    - "You gotta be as ready as possible, but you can never be fully ready"

Again, some countries trying to create a negative narrative against China. Yes they tried to cover it up initially but then they gave us weeks/months head-start to come to terms with it. They worked with WHO to get as much information out as possible.

I really feel our authorities here are trying their hardest to try and follow a lot of these recommendations within our restricted resources (testing capacity in particular). Our testing is less then ideal, but they are trying to address it. As he said "no matter how prepared you are for this, even the most advanced countries will not be prepared".

Listening to Trump you would swear this virus snook up on everybody. We have had so much information , that we got from China, for weeks at this stage.

Way I "think" it is, if your company is not earning enough to cover wages/bills/rented premises and your turning over no profit but at a loss from opening then it applies.

Could be way off but thats my reading of it.
But I'm sure my employer might read it drifferently

Interesting. I'm working by myself and I'm probably at the point of just covering expenses like website hosting, broadband, etc so that would make sense.

I'd suggest that it's more a case that that UK, Spain and Italy had (and still have) a huge amount of unconfirmed cases.

Businesses can stay open I presume? The retail list lists one of the essential retail outlets as 'retail sale of office products and services for individuals working from home and for businesses'. I'm in tomorrow as normal anyways.

Taken from the Press release - it would seem that you need to prove a 25% drop in turnover. I know this is open to interpretation but worth checking

Employers must self-declare to Revenue that they have experienced significant negative economic disruption due to Covid-19, with a minimum of 25% decline in turnover, and an inability to pay normal wages and other outgoings, in accordance with guidance to be issued by Revenue.

Trying to enjoy life isn’t a coping mechanism. I don’t have any problems coping. It’s an opportunity.

And the thing is about opportunities that you often only see them in hindsight.

But, staying ‘razor sharp’ is your prerogative. Go for it

If you say so, chief! ;)

Good luck, and I hope you have lots of fun during this global pandemic... :)

There is no lockdown, where are you getting this from?

People have not been instructed not to run.

A person going out for exercise is encouraged.

By the way, armies don't declare Martial law, governments do unless there's a coup.

Non essential business close, what is non essential?

A lot of companies don't know what to do.

Ministers on the talk shows now unable to explain what to do either.

Like I said they just created a rather large communication problem. It needs to be addressed quickly.

They don't. They have 800 dead.

Italy has 6000 dead with a population of 60 million.

Whereas China has 3000 dead with a population of one billion. Let that sink in.

France is not counting in the total number the elderly who have been dying in the nursing homes (EPHAD).

No Trump banned travel from China in JANUARY.
Also the Chinese communist party surpressed vital information for 6 weeks and locked up dissenters trying to spread information. So stop the CCP propaganda ok

While admirable on face value I can't help but think it might have the unintended consequence of keeping prices higher for the native catch.

    https://www.irishtimes.com/news/politics/minister-not-proposing-fishing-fleet-tie-up-despite-covid-19-impact-1.4208243

I suspect it's anything but unintended.

I'm not an employer, though. I'm just self employed as a sole trader.

I don't have employees though so maybe that's targeted to companies who will struggle to pay their workers?

Not sure it applies to a sole trader who's struggling but just covering bills. I can definitely show a drop over over 25% but not sure it applies.
