I worded that wrong I meant he implemented a full lock down we still have public transport going , factories open sites ECT, I think we should be in total lockdown aswell is what I was tryna say

But public transport is still operating in the UK as well, plus people can still go to work. There hasn't been a ban in either jurisdiction on going to work, regardless of it being essential or non essential, apart from certain sectors of retail.

Is it just me, or is public transport more packed today? There's at least twice as many on my bus right now as there was yesterday.

    But there is
Cleaning to be ramped up, limit to amount of passangers and 2m rule to be adhered to.
People are much more likely to follow specific guidelines than generalities, if you want to maintain 2m separation put lines on the floors etc.

US have done about 320,000 tests & are doing about 70,00 tests a day.

the US will probably be a good region to see the true death rate in a few weeks as they should have millions of tests done by then.
    10% overall are positive.
28% positive in New York where the virus is out of control.

Just as I thought. We need to stop this dangerous overreaction before we destroy the global economy. Self isolation for the vulnerable and back to work for everyone else. https://www.ft.com/content/5ff6469a-6dd8-11ea-89df-41bea055720b

Italy has banned people from cycling, jogging and closed all parks. People are still dying in their homes. And still people here are saying jogging is ok.🥺

There's some clinical trials taking place for antiviral treatments, and some vaccines are in development. That said, it could be a year before the process for those is finished.

Technically it's probably still on shaky ground, but nobody would be stupid enough to challenge it right now.

There's almost ZERO difference between what's happening on the UK to what was just announced??

Size of groups is one difference.

And also, they acted late, allowed millions of people to infect each other way after Ireland took measures.

A few days ago they were planning to send the virus packing within 12 weeks.

They are testing way less than us and also testing the wrong people.

They went for herd immunity and economic protection before protecting the people which was the purpose of actions of Irish government.

They have now done an embarrassing about face that may be simply too late and Ireland, whilst not perfect is 2-3 weeks ahead with a plan in attempt to keep numbers down.

I'm glad I'm in Ireland and not in the UK.

Take it week by week. They are encouraged by some things and while we will continue to see more cases the % rise is more important than actual numbers.

The only thing I care about right now, is knowing as much about this virus and how to survive it as possible. And that involves reading as much as I can, and keeping up to date with everything and anything that might make the difference!

If others want to distract themselves with hobbies etc and distance themselves from the whole thing, as a coping mechanism... that's their choice. Good for them! Knock yourself out!

I don't need any coping mechanism. I don't need escapism from this situation...

It's a very serious situation, and I have no desire to ignore that or distract myself from it. I need to be razor sharp and focused for whatever might happen next... I can't do that if I'm distracting myself with pointless hobbies at this time!

(Nothing against hobbies btw - I engage in plenty during less important times!) :)

Trying to enjoy life isn’t a coping mechanism. I don’t have any problems coping. It’s an opportunity.

And the thing is about opportunities that you often only see them in hindsight.

But, staying ‘razor sharp’ is your prerogative. Go for it

Its very natural to worry, it'd be strange if you didn't but the best and brightest in the world are on the case and we seem to be doing a good job here in Ireland. Follow the advice, mind yourself and we'll get through it alright. And we'll have one hell of a hooley at the end of all this :D

Question from a self employed person. A long shot but thought I'd ask.

If sales are way, way down but I've not completely stopped selling - can I apply for the €350 for now? Shutting everything down might harm my sales when I come back due to losing placement in the algorithm of the site I sell on. And it's so unpredictable as to when it will pick up again.

If we're still bringing in a trickle of income can we apply for this? All of the official info uses wording like "ceased trading" or "no longer earning" which leaves people like me hanging a bit in a grey area. This must apply to a lot of people though. Not everyone has had to stop completely.

Have been watching DARTS going by my house all day, saw about 15 trains and I would say a total of 7 passengers maybe 8.

Way I "think" it is, if your company is not earning enough to cover wages/bills/rented premises and your turning over no profit but at a loss from opening then it applies.

Could be way off but thats my reading of it.
But I'm sure my employer might read it drifferently

    1. No, only personnel qualified to work in clincial labs can process the tests.

    2. Some helthcare professionals have their work suspended. Off the top of my head, staff that primarily worked in outpatient departments can be redeployed at testing centres to take the swabs.

You would think taking a swab is a simple task but it still has to be done correctly. 2 swabs are taken, 1 from the throat, 1 from the nose.
If you don't swab the correct area i.e right at the back of the throat and right up the nasal cavity then you won't get a good sample. The quality of the sample is so important.

This task cannot be just left to the public to do themselves as they may not take the swabs correctly. I say that because I see urine and feces specimens sent into the lab in every container you can imagine; 7up bottles, jam jars, pill bottles. Any specimen not taken correctly has to be rejected.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry what I meat regarding the analysis of the test was not any Joe Soap from the street, I meant acquiring technicians from another lab environments that may not necessarily be diagnostic in nature. Still qualified but from a different line of business. (Perhaps that is what the HSE are attempting at the moment considering they wish to ramp up diagnosis?)

Regarding the second point, I'm also not talking about leaving it to the public themselves rather just broadening the scope for who can perform those tests post a crash course in administering them. I'm not trying to denigrate the process, but I fail to believe that members of the public could not be trained up to perform this given instruction. In saying that, there seems to be more of a bottleneck in the analysis of swabs so increasing throughput in the taking of swabs is not going to speed the process up greatly.

Uk, Spain and Italy when at 1,200 cases had approx 30 deaths each.
We have approx 1,200 cases and 6 deaths.
Perhaps the lockdown has slowed the virus?

Maybe we are learning from the other countries.
I dunno, a fragile green shoot. Fingers crossed!
