This is the issue with our current approach... Doesn't count for the ignorant or selfish. But on the other hand, if the rest of us practice social distancing as recommended, we should remain safe from these tools. We don't need to be flawless either, just aim to be.

I think Holohan said the aim was 'Most of the people, following most of the measures, most of the time' or something to that effect. So even with the dimwits, the measures should still be relatively effective one would hope!

I think the line that the younger doctor had is simple and effective - 'act as if you have it'. That will help people keep their social distance.

Too many of my generation think social distancing just means go outside unfortunately.

How?

They are only testing severe/hospital cases. They have no idea of the total number infected nor do they care. They want herd immunity.

They are only locking down now because they have realised that social distancing hasn't worked and their NHS Is going to be over run.

They were hoping for 60% of population to be infected and for that % to give herd immunity but now it looks like around 80% will be infected due to the failure of social distancing.
This will lead to much more serious cases than the NHS can cope with.

The fact their death rate is multitudes higher than our own?

One would assume the level of healthcare is roughly equivalent between our nations. They have a population approx 11 times greater than our own, so their death rate should be around 66 to be level with ourselves. They are in the mid 300's, around 5 times higher per capita with some basic back of napkin maths.

When you can't test everyone, the death rate is the best indicator of level of infection in the population.

I'm sure it is. Trouble is, you then need a lab with trained people and the appropriate test equipment to actually do the testing. None of these can be just magicked up.

Ah captain hindsight.

It takes time to manufacture and acquire all the necessary kits, reagents and analysers to start testing for a previously unknown virus.

With most countries around the world looking to acquire the same things as we are at the same time.
