USA did a good job closing travel early from China and Europe, when the MSM were calling him racist and people on here saying we should retaliate. At least now they can devise a plan state by state and have that extra leeway.

You're joking right? Sure he made the headlines, & got his approval rating up by banning travel, which is all that is important. But he let the few cases that had already leaked into the country fester.

Only recently has social distancing been encouraged. Too late. There never appeared to be a focus on contact tracing either, to control any clusters that sprung up. He didn't care. He made the 'swinging big d*ck' move of closing the border. The dimwits thought that was all that was needed to control the 'Chinese virus'. He's failed his people.

The main delay is at the labs isn't it?
Theres 40,000 people waiting to be swabbed.

Thats a backlog before they even get to a lab.

Surely for the tests they could train people to complete the tests in a day and put them out in the field.
    What does that mean?

Did Simon Harris say today that the contact tracing for confirmed positive cases was shortening so social distancing self isolating was working

UK never mentioned construction? Is that essential, all the B&Q's all the hardware yards, all the garden centres?

They did start two weeks ago. Things take time

Coronavirus has been front page news since at least January 1st. We were told by the HSE time and time again they were well prepared for something like Coronavirus. We are at the very bottom of the ramp when it comes to cases and their testing process is already essentially overstressed and broken.

That UK "lockdown" is not much stricter than what we've had.

    What does that mean?

From the example on Late Late Show on Friday when they did the test on Tubridy is looked like a step up from dipping the oil on a car so should be easy to train people in to do it. Obviously PPE needs to be worn but the actual test itself is piss easy.

Agreed. But also the labs seem to have limited capacity. It's crazy these bottlenecks are happening after the time we've had to prepare.
You think its crazy that a national service wasn't set up in a few weeks for a virus that has never been seen before?

    You're hard to please.

I wonder how many of this 40,000 figure are currently self isolating. There's bound to be a thousand or so morons in that group...

This is the issue with our current approach... Doesn't count for the ignorant or selfish. But on the other hand, if the rest of us practice social distancing as recommended, we should remain safe from these tools. We don't need to be flawless either, just aim to be.

I think Holohan said the aim was 'Most of the people, following most of the measures, most of the time' or something to that effect. So even with the dimwits, the measures should still be relatively effective one would hope!

No wonder theres such a delay in testing. The vast majority will test negative.

But this is what is recommended and it's why the threshold to get a test was lowered.

Yeah the UK has a pretty weird relationship with pets. They treat them almost better than people.

When I go the supermarket, this is what I do.

Before entering supermarket, put on a fresh pair of disposable gloves.
In supermarket, spray down my gloves with disinfectant spray or hand sanatizer.
Do my shopping and pay etc.
Just outside shop, dispose of gloves.

    Sound ok?
    Or missing anything silly etc

Will there not be a time if the numbers infected become so high that contact tracing will be pointless?

If we follow the south korean model successfully, are there any estimates as to when the peak will be and when restrictions will be lifted?

I don’t understand how we are following this without strict quarantine

I think the line that the younger doctor had is simple and effective - 'act as if you have it'. That will help people keep their social distance.

Too many of my generation think social distancing just means go outside unfortunately.

Serious question and forgive me if it comes across as scare mongering.

But we are looking at the UK and saying they're fecked / got it wrong / put themselves into lockdown.

    They have had 6650 cases
    We have had 1,125

    Their population 66.44 million
    Our population 4.83 million

They've had a case for every 9990 people
We've had one for every 4293

But they're much worse off than us?

    How?

They are only testing severe/hospital cases. They have no idea of the total number infected nor do they care. They want herd immunity.

They are only locking down now because they have realised that social distancing hasn't worked and their NHS Is going to be over run.

They were hoping for 60% of population to be infected and for that % to give herd immunity but now it looks like around 80% will be infected due to the failure of social distancing.
This will lead to much more serious cases than the NHS can cope with.

The fact their death rate is multitudes higher than our own?

One would assume the level of healthcare is roughly equivalent between our nations. They have a population approx 11 times greater than our own, so their death rate should be around 66 to be level with ourselves. They are in the mid 300's, around 5 times higher per capita with some basic back of napkin maths.

When you can't test everyone, the death rate is the best indicator of level of infection in the population.

Not businesses where hordes of people will congregate.
