Big increase in cases and deaths in Turkey today. Just shows you when Erdogan said Turkey had no cases of Covid19 he was right because there were not Ff..king testing for it. 37 dead out of 1500+ cases.

i never thought he'd do it - but by god - the UK is now on full lockdown.

Not even WW2 was that restrictive.

    This is incredible.

The UK has literally entered "war mode"

    What even is this post?

Some posters actually seem to be getting some perverse enjoyment out of the situation unfolding.

We're now much looser than UK. People cannot crib about UK now. Our own house is not in order.

I’ve been thinking this for days..

We seem a little nonchalant about it. Holohan, for me, although articulate, appears just a little too normal and calm. Too calm.. he seems to be just an update machine.

We need drivers, people really pushing the narrative..

Taking them off them and sedating them so they don't feel pain as they die alone.

But a bag of chips is more important.

A bag of chips is more important? What the fk are you talking about? Shrill social media crap. People queued in their cars for a take away. Get the **** over yourself.

People praising Boris here need to take a look in the mirror. This man is just after performing a massive backtrack after making a major f*ck up as if nothing happened.

What would you rather he do? Give up and cry in the corner? He has massively stepped up effort now.

Boris Johnson made a great speech. Let's hope people heed him.

He didn't say sorry for waiting ten days more than other countries to introduce social distancing measures.. people have this need to have a 'lockdown' officially... Great let's have a lockdown.. we already living like boris suggested in our house so won't change our lives..

If the government close non essential business what happens to those where employees can work from home completely? Do they have to stop working?

Doesn't take long for peoole to turn on our government after saying what a great job they were doing.

But the UK did it so we should...

The government handled this exceptionally well at the start. But they've dropped the ball since then. A lockdown is the only way of dealing with this and it should have already been called.

Until we shut down the ports and airports we can’t really say we are making a serious effort. No point eradicating the virus in the country whilst continuously importing the virus. This will never work unless the plan is to continue the current measures until a vaccine is available.

    Absolutely infuriating

Keep yourself in than and don't worry yourself about teens.

The leaders here are doing a great job, we don't and shouldn't be following the UK.

Ireland has been doing great, lets get real, every town and city in Ireland is a ghost town, yes a few sneaky pups open in rural places, and people going on trips to scenic areas, but that's a drop in the ocean to what we have achieved regarding distancing .
We haven't seen '' sardine in a tin'' type gathering in Ireland, like we've seen in the UK in the past two weeks.
I agree. I wish it were next week already so we can see where we are and what's next for us.

We'll do the same here tomorrow

Maybe, but doesn't mead we should.

In general, people are only going to and from work, and nothing else here. Maybe we should close everyone down, I don't have enough knowledge tbh, but generally I think we've been proactive and balanced in our approach.

Hard for us to justify based on anything other than hysteria, a UK type shutdown here.

Restaurants, cafes, coffee shops, horse racing all still going on though. Hows the "Strong social distancing push." Going?

Cafes and coffee shops you say?

Its going fine according to Leo Varadkar's statement today.

They went from "herd immunity, large gatherings, pubs open, be grand" and rolled back each one and now full lockdown. We need to do similar here. There are too many morons risking too many people's lives by not following the simple fcuking rule of stay away from other people you don't live with.

This is literally a matter of life and death. It's that stark. You can postpone weddings, loans, jobs, you can't bring the dead back to life.

    That's it really.

I don't understand the people saying we don't need a lockdown.

A small proportion of the population here have proven that they're stupid cnuts that can't be trust to self quarantine, self isolate or maintain social distance.

For anyone who's already following social distance and quarantine procedures, it will make no difference to us, so I don't understand the feckin' problem with a lockdown

At the weekend in howth there were no cars involved and massive queues close together

Yes, annoying but it doesn't compare to what the UK have been doing, packed like sardines into trains, buses, parties, parks.

We are going okay as is, no need for lockdown, if the number tell us that. And the number have looked good in Ireland, so far.

Police had to step in in some Italian, French and Spanish villages when the city dwellers fled to their second homes and the locals took exception. Puts a lot of pressure on local healthcare systems that aren't equipped to deal with a pandemic in a situation when the population has swelled.

Horse racing behind closed doors and strict conditions.

Social distancing is going well here I feel.

Also, most restaurants, coffee shops and cafes are closed. Must be at 95% levels.

Behind closed doors still has a lot of people there.

Did you not see the pictures of crowds at beaches/beauty spots over the weekend?

Queuing for chips in Howth ffs

He made it from necessity as the previous inactivity now threatens the UK.

Necessity in the face of an emergency brought about by inaction cannot be considered a virtue
