NI's numbers are very encouraging, they seem on a par with the Republic, especially with deaths

They are only testing hospitalized cases...

Is germany and thailand not reporting high numbers of pneumonia since this started though?

Logic is a better tool than insults.

It seems that WHO approved data from China in not accepted by some but they can believe the unbelievable low death rate figures from Germany.

Yes I think it's inevitable too, but it's important to get the timing right to get the maximum effect.

They tell us that we must wait for 5 to 14 days to see the effects of the mitigation measures currently in force.

That also means that we must look back 5 to 14 days to see what was not done at that stage to explain today's figures.

We are being reactive not proactive as usual, which IMHO is a big mistake.
What does one do after 6 weeks of lockdown and numbers continue to rise.

How does the state ensure civil order?

Can we cope we other health issues caused by inactivity and people's mental health.

Strange... they did not think of those issues when they decided that "cocooning" was appropriate for our elders. ie. incarcerating them without trial.

    :(

I know, but the deaths total suggests they are well behind GB in infections

From tomorrow, Vietnam won't allow Vietnamese people to fly back into Ho Chi Minh because of the space required for the mandatory two-week quarantines. Airlines will also stop all international flights. It's going to be a closed country apart from diplomats coming in and some global airlines flying people out.

Here's what a lockdown looks like in Argentina. They take it slightly more seriously.

But he followed the guidelines? The airports were open. Ryanair was flying. Not his fault.......

From what I've read you shouldn't question the guidelines. At least he is trying to raise awareness.

I think personal responsibility comes into it. He should have questioned the need to travel to the UK with his mother for a party.
If he or his mother dies or spreads it to others who die saying its not his fault is not going to hold much water.

    Dublin has 57% of cases.

If you live in Dublin and are not practising social distancing property cop on.

I think social distancing in Dublin is a real challenge, because (together with London) it must be the European capital with the highest number of accomodation sharing.

In other European cities, people live with the families (as mentioned already for Italy and Spain) or on their own.

If you take a house share with 4 flatmates from 4 different Counties, they have close contacts not only with each other, but also with 4 different workplaces and then with 4 different sets of friends and 4 different families.

I think there should be a Gov plan of requisitioning Hotels and using them for the quarantine of positive cases - as it is already happening elsewhere.

Most people I know who are currently working are in non essential roles. They are still tipping away.

    You do some learning friend

Doubt that very much , i drove from Gorey to Dublin this morning in record time, very little on the way up and very little traffic on M50 .
My son uses the N4 and he said he is getting ip and down in half the normal time. My road is full of cars when i am leaving fir work , usually its fairly empty by the time i normally leave. Anecdotal evidence that a lot of people not in their workplace.

what about all the holiday homes that are full in donegal, from northern Ireland
    Agreed.
Same as for Scotland and the Lake District.

They are also not learning from mistakes in other Countries.

Both are lying about the cases in their own countries.

Sanctions should be brought against Russia and China.

Why sanctions against Russia? For sending in medical aid?

And China is not lying. If what they did didn't work, then we may as well all give up.

What Europe should learn from this is the US isn't our friend. The US blames Europe for the disease, and tries to steal a vaccine from Germany. No medical help.

    Could be the US's Chernobyl.

As someone who knows travellers do you think they will read the information and adhere to the washing of hands?

It's up to the individuals I suppose but the way family groupings operate will mean the chance of infections being passed on is greater and underlying health issue will have a big impact.

    Italy: +4,790 cases/+602 deaths.

Shocking but less than previous days....which is positive.

Typical self-contradictory piece from the Guardian, on any subject related to a state or group they favour or disfavour.

Only thing you can say about it is that the approach has been consistent with all their speculative pieces over the years.

You can rely on the Guardian for well laid out articles on generally known and accepted scientific facts.

For anything with a geopolitical context, avoid like the plague

It is up to Ireland to shut the border from the UK to Donegal. If thats not possible, what else can be done?

Frankly I'd let cities and towns set up their own road blocks right now.

Great to see decreases in Italy and seemingly Germany as well. Belgium also had it's lowest number of new cases today since 4 days ago. But Portugal , Switzerland , Norway and Austria also recorded their highest number of news cases so far in the pandemic today, by a very wide margin, maybe they are just in a later phase of the process than the bigger countries

    Hi. Question.

So after all this distancing or even lock down. How do we get rid of the virus. Surly it will come back after all these measures are relaxed?

How can it ever go away?
