The Mayors of Dublin, Cork and Galway are calling for a lockdown across the country to stop the spread of Covid-19.

Dublin Lord Mayor Tom Brabazon says people who were out and about yesterday in parks as if it was a normal Sunday are not getting the seriousness of the disease.

He says a lockdown would require people to stay in their homes as much as possible being allowed out for essentials like food shopping.

Mayor of Galway, Mike Cubbard says the Government's social distancing guidelines are not working.

He says decisions must be made quickly to ensure the number of deaths don't spiral out of control like they have in Spain, France and Italy.

John Sheehan, Mayor of Cork and GP, says physical distancing is causing a lot of challenges for people despite their best intentions.

"The only way around this until our testing is more readily available is to have a total lockdown.

Fianna Fail Senator Mark Daly who is also calling for a lockdown says this approach has worked in every other country.

Says nothing like that on the AIB website detailing the supports available.

    https://aib.ie/covid19/mortgagecustomers

or on the form you have to fill out

    https://aib.ie/covid19/mortgagecustomers/mortgage-form

Like a lot of things from "A Caller to Joe Duffy" I'd wait for an official response to that from AIB - Which of course Joe will do right?.

He did just that - AIB have been in contact with the prog and apologised to the callers saying that they were dealt with incorrectly because they were some of the first applicants and the process had not been rolled out correctly at that point.

Make of that what you will.

Operations at Ireland West Airport in Co. Mayo are to be suspended next week, as a result of the impact of Covid-19 on air travel.

In a statement this afternoon, the airport's Managing Director said all staff would be temporarily laid off, from Monday next.

That strategy just seems like plain commonsense to me. A significant portion of people are too stupid to rely on taking necessary precautions so the government needs to make it happen.

Genuine question, but even if we have the capacity to take 15000 samples each day, do we really have capacity to test that many samples each day?

The 15,000 samples a day refers to the workload that laboratories hope to process on a daily basis in the near future.

It is not the number of people who are swabbed on a daily basis.

why are people surprised by the amount of people out yesterday? sunny day, no where else to go.. advice is get out in the fresh air.. sure social distance.. any time i was out walking over the weekend no one was walking or holding hands that weren't part of a family unit already.. pictures of packed car parks are misleading.. you have to park somewhere and not everyone arrives the same time.. they arrive get out and disperse.. some exceptions im sure but in the main i think people are being sensible

I'd take a lockdown if it means places have a good chance of reopening early April

I think your talking at least September before normality returns. Hope I'm wrong but that's my take. This will cause a depression. While we are doing a superb job at keeping the death toll low here in the Republic it will rise. Their will be carnage in England if their numbers follow Italy which they appear to be doing if we take it that the UK is a fortnight behind Italy.

You might have been sensible, but what about the fcukwits queueing on top of each other for ice cream cones and chips? Where's the social distancing there?

So we've to stop you going to those places (even though you are maintaining social distancing) in an attempt to stop the thick fcukwits from going there because they don't have the intelligence to practice social distancing.

Can someone or mods create a thread specifically for the mask/no mask arguments

Oh no, not more about the masks.

The current Public Health advice, everywhere, is that people are not recommended to wear masks unless they have the virus themselves or someone caring for a person infected with the virus. And obviously Health Personnel.

If people want to go and spend their money on masks, just go do it.

I'll stick with my positive news that I posted earlier about the LE EITHNE being utilised as a base for testing in Cork. Thank you to the Naval Services.

I don't see that time frame as being realistic. China is still under lockdown. Many countries like the US and UK are a long way off peak numbers. When you relax measures you have to be definite the virus is well gone. Nothing will change until the end of June at the earliest.

Health ministers etc will say things for different reasons, sometimes just to give hope to their people and raise morale.

Even an ordinary person can see certain things. Once we recorded our first case on March 1st you could tell from the pattern in other countries that all major gatherings like matches and the St. Patrick's Day parade, anything that drew large crowds together, who would mingle outdoors and indoors, would be gone within a week to ten days.

If people think that a city like New York is going to shut down until June then they're crazy.

If they shut down the economy how can they expect to sustain life? Social unrest would be insane, there'd be riots on the streets, and the aftermath would be a complete warzone.

These measures are to try and stop the spread and minimize it, but it's not possible to continue for months...anyone thinking it is, isn't living in reality.

Slim and none. Early April is only a week or two away. Not happening.

    Enforce the social distancing.
Give the Gardaí power to arrest, fine or whatever else they need to enforce it on any premises anywhere, if they are underage then parents face the consequences.
Don’t need a lockdown just enforcement.

Even if there isn't a contagious pandemic on the loose, why in the name of fúck would you queue that long for a bag of chips? I'd say it never normally has a queue that long. It's like people are trying to catch the thing.

Overdosing on the chloroquine.. yes, Nigeria. Dosage.. unknown. Chloroquine antimalarial drug, worldwide usage. Synthetic form of quinine but you know this.
    Overdosed on tonic water... hardly.

Lockdown will happen once and only once so the government have to get the timing spot on, They will hold off for another week or two at least ,

Like everything, the few ruin it for the rest of us. Like that gob****e boasting about going to the pub in the earlier versions of the thread.
