Reading that thread right now, he's being pretty intense, flat-out saying health workers here are going to die in the next few weeks. Could be right, hope he's not, but a bit suprised that he's saying things like that under the guise of being a HSE consultant

He has this beauty of a post - get pneumonia from this and if you survive you'll be dead within 10 years (if you are lucky to survive that long) because of complications

I think people are making too much of a big deal out of this. I went for a walk on the beach today. There was a decent amount of people there. Everyone was adhering to social distancing.

It's easy look at a picture an say that people are close together so must not be adhering to social distancing, but these people are most likely family members living in the same house already.

I haven't been near any friends or extended family or neighbours for over a week and don't intend on being. My only public outings are to get groceries.

But I see no harm in going to the beach with my kids. There was other family's there that weren't within 5m of me let alone 2m.

FFS. You do know social distancing doesn't stop the virus, only slows it. It reduces the risk but doesn't eliminate it. If you're not going to find an empty beach stay ta fcuk at home

Just looking at how busy the parks and public areas in Dublin are today, I think it is inevitable that much stricter measures will be imposed as the week goes on. We had our chance to self-isolate without restrictions and unfortunately too many people have failed to comply.

Parks are absolutely thronged. People have the best of intentions, but it is impossible to maintain social distance along footpaths and entrances if the parks are packed out.

How we avoid mirroring Italy in the simplest of terms. Self isolate.

There's an air of complacency. People don't realise how bad it is. You can even see it on boards.ie with people metaphorically patting the government on the back for a job well done. They look at the released numbers and think it's not so bad. The waiting list for testing is huge. This is going to explode and it's not been taken seriously enough.

    - There is no air of complacency for the vast majority.
    - People do realise how bad it's going to get.
    - The Government are doing a reasonable job so far.
    - We know that there are large numbers awaiting testing - and why.
    - We know it's going to explode over the coming weeks.
    - People are taking it very seriously and understand that we will have to take it even more seriously over the next couple of weeks.

I have thought again and come to the same conclusion.

How surprising. The emergency powers will be used.
    FVP3 wrote: »

If the rate of acceleration continues to increase with the close down of all pubs, restaurants, cafes etc then nothing we can do will stop this. Stopping people wondering lonely on a beach isn't going to help much is it?

That defeatist mantra doesn't wash with me. People aren't wandering "alone" on beaches nor supermarkets for that matter. Some selfish people are gathering in large numbers at locations to do the same thing. These people are the thicks that will have our government have to enforce emergency legislation against the compliant, because these people don't like the incovenience of a pandemic. The same pattern happened in Italy and Spain.
    FVP3 wrote: »

As it happens the rate of increase has not accelerated in the last few days, but that might be something to do with testing over the weekend. We should also be cognisant of the fact that more tests will reveal more cases, but this tells us nothing about the actual increase. So a wiser strategy is randomised testing of people. A few hundred a day, symptomatic or not, picked from the register.

It's a lot to do with the testing. Your definition of a wiser "random" testing given the number of test kits right now, is laughable. Even so targeted testing is clearly preferable to the elimination/temporary abating of community numbers requiring ICU. As it happens one test is not enough. It may take 3 for it to be confirmed. Up until recently, the HSE were long finger testing.

No it isn't. Italy went into lockdown mode after their health services was overwhelmed, and despite what people say here, Latin culture is in fact different as they socialise outdoors and are tactile. Not closing down outdoors for southern europeans, is like not closing down pubs here.

They tried the please follow our advice phase also. People didn't comply. They introduced Red zones. People didn't comply.

To repeat what I said. It is posts like yours and that general attitude that some people have that has Italy and Spain in the positions they are in.

National emergency, national guard, lockdowns when the horse has bolted. People ignored advice.
    FVP3 wrote: »

However, as I said, if the facts change and the level of change accelerates ( not the number of cases which will increase for a while, but the change in the increase in the number of cases) then I will change my mind. However I reckon the risk of transmission from people walking on the beach on their own is close to 0%.

I don't care whether you change your mind or not. You have been told factually what the situation is. If you want to live under a rock, please do so. Just don't come on here talking rubbish and think that people will ignore it.

We have a limited capacity to deal with serious cases. Italy had multiples of ventilators and equipment and a top notch health system in the North. Now its overwhelmed and people who are being morphined to ease their death, because they are not being treated, due to numbers of younger patients requiring ventilators.

Walking on a beach may be one of those things YOU may lose because others couldn't be responsible.

Been out and about a bit. Generally people are distancing well outdoors.

Outdoors in open spaces with good distancing etiquette is not the worry...

OK he's now talking about how he gets his food delivered to his house and engages in a 6-hour disinfectant procedure for the groceries. If this virus is as infectious as he's acting like it is, we are screwed. I'm just going to assume - for the sake of my mental health for now - that he's overdoing things a bit
That was my view too. There's a level of urgency and alarm to it that would just not suit most people and the unintended consequence of freaking others out. I'm happy to follow the more relaxed general guidelines.:)

BBC reporters seem to think they are immune to this. They never implement social distancing whether interviewing a nurse, care worker or group of chumps in a pub.

That makes no sense. Outdoors 5m away from anyone pretty much carries zero risk. The risk comes from when clowns decide to queue for public toilets or gather around coffee shops and bins etc. That's whats happening at tourist spots close to Dublin etc.

I'm not against going to uncrowded beach where the guidelines can be followed.
However the beach in question was packed, so people were not adhering to the HSE advisory about social distancing as a consequence.

I went to the supermarket today and there was almost 100% compliance with social distancing. Staff wore gloves but possibly some issues with handling money so I made a contact less payment.
Went for a walk in the grounds of Kilkenny Castle and again the vast majority were keeping their distance. Overall, I am positive about the 95% compliance rather than negative about the 5% non- compliance. In general, people were going out of their way to avoid close contact

    Wow.

Check some of the figures out of New York State (yes the State):

    15,168 (+4,796)

They added nearly the entire total cases of the UK in ONE DAY.

    Washington state - 1,793
    California - 1,543
    New Jersey - 1,327

All other states are currently under a 1,000.

New York is really in trouble. That state needs to be sealed off from the rest of the country pronto.

True, but a huge number become complacent.

Stopping for a coffee or ice cream...
    Popping in for petrol.
All of a sudden, you're in a queue or indoor environment.
Or outdoors with a large group.

    It can't continue.

I’m just back from shouting in the window at my Ma. The usual suspects are drinking cans on the bank of the river heaped up on top of one another for warmth.

Well no, there's not going to be an instant end to it one day, it will be gradual.

Ive just come back from a beach in the south west, busy but every "household" is keeping their distance, if it's less than 2m it's only for a split second walking past. People who are close together have been couped up in a house together for the entire week it makes no difference at this stage.

Yet there's a guy in a car driving up and down with his phone filming people ready to go on a quest online vigilantism.
