Cannot be making projections on the number of infections without good data. I have symptoms and am waiting for a test, 5 days and counting. Others too, so there’s a serious lag in testing and results.

80% (and more) of cases are mild, that is an accepted statistic. That Italy screwed up, sadly, is also an accepted situation. Based on what we are doing now we will not be Italy.

Italy screwed up? Italy was the first nation to ban flights to china the first 1s to take action.

What we are doing isnt going to do much theirs still a sh*tload of people out and about market day here on thursday and town has been jammed everyday since that, it lasted for a day or 2 and they came crawling back out,

It might be mild to some but some of us has close people who it wont be,

Were expecting a baby in july, my mam has a bad chest, my granda wouldnt survive it for an hour and my nan would be the same my sister also has really bad ashtma but its okay because 80% will be mild as u said,

And once any real stats are throwing at you "its a bad flu" guys the argument is fairly dropped too i notice.

Mild in clinical terms, according to our resident HSE consultant. A significant proportion of those "mild" cases will still be left with permanent lung damage.

    Do you enjoy scaremongering?

    Permanent lung damage?

That's complete and utter tripe and you know it.

Not sure what anyone is supposed to do with that information. That AMA is great but is there data or research on that?

IF we are going to follow the path of 'herd immunity' without a vaccine (I am not an advocate of this) then surely controlled exposure would be preferable to uncontrolled exposure (for obvious reasons).

So in that context has anybody seen any plans or back of the envelope musings on how that may be done?

You relax restrictions until you see a reduction in overall ICU capacity and then you tighten the grip again. This could go on for 2 years. It was described in the Imperial College paper released to the UK government during the week.

No it's not the 'vast majority'

    Of everyone who contracts covid-19

20% will have severe symptoms (needing some form of hospital care)
    60% have a mild illness, fever/cough/aches
20% will he asymptomatic or have so little symptoms they barely notice they're sick.

    https://www.eurosurveillance.org/content/10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2020.25.10.2000180

80% is the vast majority who will barely be affected. An increase in cases now is just an increase in testing more than an indication of it continuing to spread as it is already with us for weeks at this stage. Even out of the official recorded cases, many more are recovering than are requiring continued care. It's not time for complacency but we should hopefully start to see less scaremongering talk to do with lockdown and more of a push on social distancing, good hygiene practices and protecting vulnerable people so that we can start to get back to normal.

That's all fine if you are of the opinion/believe there are just 785 people in the ROI with the virus who have symptoms.

People who are looking to be tested are not being tested....just told to self isolate.

I know of 3 cases two where gp said it is certainly covid, waiting since Monday morning for a test.

One confirmed in Spain who decided to return to Ireland while symptomatic

As the number goes up the testing cant be sustained to keep at 30% so thats why you get a dropoff in percentages id imagine.

Just now in the local LIDL I saw some owl one telling a young lad to stand back. He replied by telling her to move forward or leave the shop. She shut her gob and moved forward. Pandemic or not, nobody has the right to boss people around. Some people like the woman here think the situation gives them the right to be rude. Spoiler alert, it doesent. I gave the young lad a thumbs up in the car park for his troubles, legend.

A few things on this fast moving thread.

Yes the CV could have hit 60% of the population and fairly quickly if it had been let to run its course. You've seen the percentage increases in the last month? From 1 in Ireland to 777, for instance. Going forward that increase gets you to 600,000 end April and to the max a few weeks later. The reason we are all self isolating and so on is that. We are taking an economic hit so it doesn't get to 60%. And judging by Korea and China, that works. Even Italy's numbers are not as exponential as they were.

60% is assumed to be the herd immunity. The reason it doesn't go higher after you hit herd immunity is because the level of transmission falls off. If every 1 person normally infects 2 healthy people when nobody is immune, then in a case where 60% have had it, or have had it and cant be infected that person only infects 1 or fewer.

(If you are uncomfortable with parts of people - imagine at the beginning 100 people infect 200 people. When the herd immunity kicks in at 60% those 100 people will only affect 40% of 200, which is 80. Those 80 infect 64 etc, and soon the transmission stops).

As for claims that Africa will be worse than Europe, their age profile will protect them.

There is some lung damage to people who have had the virus, but they don' know if it is permanent or not ( it might heel over time )

FFS, if he was close to her he should have stood back. Legend my arse.

No that's not what you said, and you're still wrong.
Not everyone will be tested. If you have no symptoms, you won't call up, you will not be a worry for the authorities and therefore won't be tested. This is the vast majority (to quote Leo) of the population who will be in this category.

You claimed that Leo has said the 'vast majority' (which for a normal speaker of English means 80%+) will be in the 'category' of 'no symptoms'.

This is absolutely incorrect. For 80% of people the virus will be 'mild' (but this just means you won't need medical care, you spend a couple of says in bed with a temperature and cough taking over the counter drugs and will start to feel better in a couple of days)

A smaller number (something like 20%) will be lucky enough to be asymptomatic, i.e. their symptoms (if they exist at all) will be so mild the person won't even think they're ill.

I'm struggling to decide who is the bigger tool
It's not the "owl one" as you call her

People have every right to tell others to keep a proper distance and they should not be forced to move because of the delinquency of others.

As the number goes up the testing cant be sustained to keep at 30% so thats why you get a dropoff in percentages id imagine.

More testing should catch more cases, so I dont get that.

The belief now is that the virus had been present in Italy for quite a while before they diagnosed a case and it got lumped in with flu data before that. By the time they paid attention quite a few were already moving towards the severe stage. They didn't seem to do enough of the now requisite testing and contract tracing, the lockdowns have been slack and their system became overwhelmed and they ear now in the situation where the cannot look after all of those in the serious to critical stage. We started on it a lot earlier and things so far do not show a risk of overwhelming the system.

I understand the anxiety as there are family and friends who've elected to stay in while this is on. I see 80% with mild cases as a positive. In fact most stats on the Worldometer site has mild cases at closer to 100%. All we can do is stay safe and keep those who are important to us safe.

He didn't just put it out, he was quoting a number he was given by the people who did the modelling.
Of course its a coincidence , do you actually think he got someone to sit down and work it all out . there is some excellent post on here but by f..k there is some sh.te as well

I don't believe that when he quoted that timeframe of 2 weeks and 15,000 cases that it was a coincidence.I think this is our number that if hit turns this from something we may be able to handle into something which resembles Italy,Spain or the uk,due to us having to then decide who gets the ICU bed and who unfortunately does not.2 weeks to try get this under some sort of control.

Who is most likely to be at risk of dying should they contract it?

Absolutely, but its very hard to due this currently in the likes of Italy due to their traditional societal structures. I believe we may have a better chance here.
Sadly the nursing home model is also not 100% safe to protect the elderly.

Mild doesn't mean staying in bed. Mild symptoms doesn't mean you will be off your feet for a few days even. If you call and "reported" mild symptoms, a box is ticked for a person reporting mild symptoms but there is no scale within that box. 80% will barely notice it, those that do notice it and those that have been reported as being hospitalised for it, are starting to recover. Any new reported cases needs to be seen in this context.

An army tent was being set up as a testing centre at Nowlan Park in Kilkenny last Friday. Testing from there will probably feed into the national picture from Tuesday. With the ramping up of testing nationwide, it is likely that we are going to have increased levels with the virus next week

    Do you enjoy scaremongering?

    Permanent lung damage?

That's complete and utter tripe and you know it.

It's not scaremongering and it's not tripe, I'm trying to put some perspective on the "Ah sure most people only get a mild case" narrative with a reminder of what "mild" actually means in clinical terms for this disease. We had it laid out for us in very factual terms already but people seem to have either forgotten or intentionally ignored it.

If people hear "mild" and think "Ah I'll risk heading down to see my folks for the day that's in it" then perhaps a stark reminder of what the risks are might make them think twice.
