Driving around Galway this morning. People are not understanding the importance of social distancing. Groups of young mothers with kids walking around and chatting away. Hardware stores full of tradesmen chatting away in the back stores. Daughters with older parents out walking around Loughrea, Galway city and Tuam. Pharmacy retail staff looking really anxious and scared, trying to be as stern as possible without being rude to elderly customers who are ignoring spacing marks on floors and around tills and basically telling staff they are over exaggerating.
Two coffee shops in Athenry open and half full if elderly customers and mothers with small children.

It's a real eye opener and it seems to me that people between the ages of 30 to 50 seem to be taking the instructions seriously but those either side of this bracket are not.

Local radio stations are packed full of callers complaining about non-adherence to the requests from the HSE.

From what I am seeing, we badly need strict enforcement of the guidelines or there will be a serious amount of dumb bewilderment among those who really don't care when their loved ones begin to die or become seriously ill and they will be scratching their heads wondering why.

It makes me laugh you ll see em all with the"STAYHOME" ****e all over there facebook but the same ****in clowns will be out chattin away like nothings happening or ignoring symptoms.. because for some reason... some people seem to think this virus only happens to other people.

A family member returned from the UK last night. He said the ferry was packed with UK cars. There were no checks when he disembarked.

I wonder how many are leaving the UK because of the current policies there. I also wonder how many are bringing the virus with them.

Why shut down and self isolate when you can do what the Americans are doing.

    That’ll show it!

Seriously though, we won’t get off easy as we’d like, but American will be well and truly ****ed

If they haven't changed their tune by now what on the earth makes you think anything other than threats (or carrying out threats on them) will work?
    That's people for ya

I think they should bring in on the spot fines. Some people only understand things when it hits them where it hurts. Relying on common sense or decency is not an effective strategy given that neither seem to be in particular abundance.

Ugh. Before I give myself a break from this thread!
Ok Baggot St Tesco, SuperValu Killester, and Nolans Clontarf, all packed in the past few days when I've been there and they're cramped supermarkets to begin with, i can't speak for all supermarkets.

    SuperValu in Killiney SC.

Wearing a mask while walking around is not really any benefit for walking around and steering clear of people. Proper face masks obviously prevent (by and large) if in close contact with an infected person. If they didn’t medics wouldn’t wear them. But they are specific grade and constantly changed and worn correctly.

The issue as raised in Hospital consultant AMA is there is a shortage of them. People bulk buying protective grade means it more likely medics run out.

    Paper ones are useless.

The official advice is to only wear them to if you are infected.

If you are not infected then they are of no use. This is official advice. You will not breathe the virus in by walking by somebody.

Doctors are at higher risk, and they were masks to prevent spreading to other patients.

People who are buying masks usually wear them wrong anyway, reuse them therefore rendering them uselss and also prevent people who need them from getting them.

What checks are you expecting as they disembark? Virus has an incubation period.

So have other European Countries, but unfortunately it is not enough to flatten to curve. This is why the other Countries (except Netherlands and UK) have introduce lockdowns.
And even lockdowns don't have immediate effects, China has shown how long it will take.

Our dog doesn't like going out for walks. He shakes and hides when he sees us getting his lead.

    He won't be requiring kennelling.

While all my clan are staying indoors apart from my wife who needs to go to her office some days its pretty annoying when i drove to local woods for a brisk walk yesterday and each time i drive by the local supervalu the car park is full and i could clearly see people queueing close to eachother in the ajoining post office just like a normal day.
My young lad works in the same supervalu part time and we pulled him out at the weekend as the place was just packed everyday.
A friend send me a video of a group of teens in Celbridge spitting on shopping trollies at their local aldi.

Show these people the latest report on sky news from Italy and they would change their tune fairly rapidly as its pretty grim.

RTE needs to start showing the real story in Italy. I went my local tesco yesterday for our weekly supllies, I was the only one wearing gloves. I didnt use a basket of trolly, just my own bags. It was quite busy,, lots of people just buying a few bits.

What I think they got wrong is telling people to shop as normal, thats crazy alot of folk shop many times a week. Thats increasing risk, increasing the numbers in shops etc.

Once a week should be the limit. I saw that video of the chinese red cross rep speaking about the italian lockdown not being strict enough. We arnt doing enough

There is a difference between a surgical mask and a respirator.
You can't say that. If a person coughs and is infected the HSE advises doctors that it can be in the air for 3 hours after.

I'd be very cautious in indoor environments such as supermarkets. Sick people need to eat also.

Just because our government didn't provision enough masks does not mean that those who saw this coming and acquired them shouldn't use them.

Obviously you need to know how to use them. Nothing youtube can't sort you out with.

This is so patronizing, a 2 minute YouTube will show you how to wear and use them correctly. It's not rocket science!!!

The virus is a minor illness for the vast majority of people. No worse than a sniffle for most. Great to see people out and about on a fine day instead of being consumed with fear. The hardcore extravaganza of panic and economic suicide will create more damage to people's health and wellbeing than the virus itself.

    Europe is a big place.

Not 90 cent in Western Europe according to this.

Things in Ireland are never as bad as people make out.

RTE is a national media. They run a national/gov agenda. People should always keep this in minds.

Ireland has a relatively young population, ~10% are over 60. But older adults are only one at risk category. People who have serious underlying medical conditions like Heart disease, Diabetes, Lung disease are also at significant risk. Underlying health conditions within the population and our relatively poor levels of physical fitness are a problem.

The numbers below come from Asthma Society of Ireland, Diabetes Ireland, Healthy Ireland and the HSE.

    Heart Disease:

High blood pressure: ~13% of the population have received treatment for high blood pressure in the last year.

High colesterol: ~10% of the population are being treated for this condition.

Body weight: ~60% of the population are overweight (37%) or obese (23%).

    Diabetes:
6.5% of the population are estimated to have some form of diabetes.

    Lung Disease:

COPD: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the name for a collection of lung diseases including chronic bronchitis, emphysema and chronic obstructive airways disease.

    From the HSE website:

The HSE estimate means that ~4% of the population don't know that they have an underlying health condition which puts them at risk.

Asthma: In Ireland, 1 in 5 people experience asthma at some stage in their life. ~7% of the population are currently being treated for the condition.

Smoking: 17% of the population are current smokers. 28% of the population are ex-smokers.

No matter how people choose to interpret the numbers, a significant portion of our population are in at risk categories and that is why we need everyone to be vigilant.

19% of the current population of Ireland are 60 and over

You know that and I know that but people who are wearing them wrong don't do stuff like watch You Tube videos.

The fact remains it is not necessary for people to wear masks to prevent getting the virus.
