Sorry guys , best to ignore me, I am in Spain and my anxiety is off the chart

Where you at Hector? Both my parents are there, Dad 70 next month, and even if they wanted to leave they can't now.

Hopefully you are ok. Just stay in and do as much as you can. Anxiety is a bad thing so make sure to do as much to relax yourself.

Can we not get a map of where the disease is spreading?
In South Korea they had an app where you could see.
    Something like the attached.

    My guess:
    - hospitals
    - airports
    - ports
    - train stations

Most likely Dublin is ground 0

I’m still amazed at how some people are still trying to downplay this. Some people won’t take this seriously enough until it hits them personally.

I know a person under 50 fighting for their lives in a coma right now. All the symptoms of Corona and just waiting for test result. Reading some of the lazy attitude to this is so concerning. A lot of people really don’t know what they are talking about and are not grasping how bad this is going to get.

Prevention is better then cure. Stay at home unless absolutely necessary. Take precautions. Wash your hands. Keep your distance. Think as though you could infect somebody else who might die from this. A decision you make could kill somebody. There is a difference between having to get shopping, to enjoying a nice chat with somebody face to face. Get in, get out of shops. Order online if possible (I’m going to order 2 weeks in advance now). My butchers have option to phone in advance and get food brought out to you in car park. I’m going to petrol station at night (if I need petrol) , preferably to use hatch. We can excercise in our kitchen (don’t need to go out) with our children or back garden if needs be.

There is an answer for everybody who thinks they need to go out. Most of us can get by at home if we put our minds to it. Just have to change that mindset from what you want or think you need, to what has to be done to slow down the spread.

    Cases in Iceland pass 400
That is over 0.1% of their population!

I don't think it's being downplayed at all, most people have now mentally processed the situation, they have adjusted and are calmer. On petrol, there is also the Pay at Pump option ,in Circle K at least.

As with everything that he says , it was mostly not true.

They have been using it , with some success in China and elsewhere since mid january , but it isn't a universal solution and has quite a few side-effects and risks.

The drug has not been approved by the FDA for Covid-19 treatment , nor is it "easily prescribed and taken" - Even a slight miscalculation in dosage can lead to death in a matter of hours so it absolutely positively could not be handed out over the counter and would have to be administered in a Hospital environment.

So - To clarify what Trump actually meant

A drug that has been in use elsewhere with some but limited positive effect on the Virus for 3 months has not yet been approved by the FDA and probably won't be any time soon ( in the context of this emergency) and even when it is, it's usage will have to be incredibly carefully controlled by medical professionals.
I think you are being overly pessimistic there. The drug has been approved for testing (of efficacy presumably), to confirm or otherwise the findings from China.

It goes without saying that it has to be prescribed/taken in controlled settings doses etc. There's no question of people buying them over the counter. I've heard it's easy to manufacture also. Drugs like this will be part of the solution, long before any vaccine is.

I think we should be careful to not completely dismiss everything Trump says. It's possible that he might sometimes say something that turns out to be right, at least partly.

Ghost planes so airlines don’t lose their slots in airports I was to fly yesterday to Canada, got text and email on what gate to go to and such so I am guess the flight still went ahead

Are airlines issuing refunds for passengers booked on those ghost flights?
Why hasn't there been a clamour from the airlines to suspend the need for the ghost flights since fuel is their main cost?

I thought it would spread like wildfire in somewhere like Dublin airport. But there's been no breakdown of cases there. Or anecdotal evidence of a cluster in Dublin airport. You'd also think cabin crew might be affected.

There definitely needs to be better reporting and exact locations of clusters. This helps people conduct their own contact tracing which will be crucial going forward.

Right now, it’s more important to act as if we will be like Italy so everybody is extra vigilant. That includes telling off idiots for being idiots. This whole “stop scaring people” has to stop. There is a massive threat and people need to be alerted to be on top of this.

Sorry but non essential mental heath (I need to be out) things need to be avoided. We are such a pampered society all we have to do is stay the f**k home. You can see people in this thread justifying things they don’t need to do but want to do. Why are they waiting until the authority’s force us to do what they won’t do? We know what’s probably coming (much stricter lockdown rules), why do people think it’s grand to go about their day relatively unconcerned until this is forced on us?

Consider yourself virtually kissed on the forehead! Spot. On.

So Spain could be worse than Italy in a few days time. This is really hitting southern Europe hard for some reason. It will be interesting to see how a country like Belgium fares.

1903 new cases in Spain today, 171 new deaths , and it's only noon.

    Lockdown not working

When did they impose the lockdown? 14th March was it?

Because we always are more ready to believe what we want to believe.
I really hope this will be the biggest anti climax I have ever experienced but the experience from Italy, France, Spain tells me this is just wishful thinking.

Absolutely. I have no confidence in the HSE anymore. They've dropped the ball so many times. They are carrying out testing but what good is that if you don't hand over a mandatory isolation order to an infected person and if your contact tracing is likely inadequate.

There are something like 20 billionaires in Ireland. If ever there was a time to put their hands in their pockets or use their contacts to help front line staff, it’ll be over the coming weeks. Need all the help they can get.

Iran , 1200 new cases and 150 deaths.
About 3 weeks straight now Iran has reported almost exactly 1100-1200 new cases every day and 95-125 deaths. Doesnt sound very legitimate, it is way too consistent.

How does that work in France / Italy / Spain - you are allowed out to go shopping, if stopped, can you not just say you are going shopping?

My understanding is that it's something like this. Before you go out you must print an official travel document which has:

    Origin and departure time
    Destination and expected arrival time
    Time returning to origin
    (and reason for travel)

If you are 'apprehended' by the police you must have one of these on you (and only one), and the time and place of the contact with police must make sense in the overall journey, for instance the direction of travel must make sense, if you're coming home you should have shopping and a correct receipt.

It's not perfect and certainly could be 'gamed' but better than nothing.

So yes you could print one off saying you where going to ALDI and nip over to your mates house, but on the way back you're going to need a bag of shopping and a receipt if you get stopped.

Had to take a short walk into my local Tescos here in Sligo and it is definitely noticeable how people are trying to keep a reasonable distance from each other. The town itself was eerily quiet with almost everything shut.

The majority of people up here have definitely gotten the message imo. What good it will ultimately do is another thing. I'm pretty much of the opinion that there is no stopping this.

Can't agree more. Imagine the dirt and germs (like e-coli) you pick up from walking outside!
We change into indoor shoes/slippers at the door.
In Asia, apartment buildings often provide a floor mat soaked with antiseptic solution which you walk on as you enter the building, before entering the lift.
I remember in local hotels in Japan with tatami floor, you take off shoes as soon as you enter, and the staff cleans the outside and the wheels of your suitcase before taking them to your room.

60 community transmissions wow, okay I can see where they are coming from with the 15,000 figure then definitely. Even a couple of community transmissions implies a huge spread of undetected cases.

As time goes by, those earlier Chinese figures are looking a little dubious.

The problem with nonchalant social distancing and "casual lockdown", is that it's going to lengthen the time these measures need to be in effect.

If everybody was truly locked down, and really it should be coordinated around the EU, we could probably get on top of this within 14 days.

People should be entirely house bound.
Army, Police and Health Care workers should deliver daily rations and meds.
Pet dogs should be taken to a converted stadium for kenneling.

Italy is too casual and so is Spain.
We are witnessing the results in real time.
