So I just came into my closed down school in Dublin to check something (I can do this without coming into contact with anyone) and the walls and shutters have been destroyed with graffiti overnight. Going to cost me 100's to get that cleaned up again, at a time when I can least afford to fix this.

Great to see the spirit of togetherness in our time of greatest crisis is strong....

What type of losers find this 'activity' entertaining?

The type of losers who we are asking to "self Isolate" when they get sick !

Aldi now closes at 8 PM.
Lidl now closes at 9 PM.

    This is nationwide?

Why are people so certain what is happening in Italy is coming our way?

From all accounts and info available during the initial stages of this virus the Italians had zero social distancing policies in place and the general public mixed and socialised the same as always.

We have closed pubs and restaurants, schools and all sporting organisations have also been closed. People from what I can see are keeping their distance when out and about and the shops for the best part are also taking responsible measure.

Ok some people are going to continue to be idiotic as always but that doesn't warrant people calling for the army to be sent in our a sudden and total lockdown of basic services.

We have taken measure to ensure this thing doesn't get beyond our control. Let's wait and see what effect these measures have on the transmission. We won't know for a few days more and I'm betting people will be pleasantly surprised .

Whats happening in Italy is coming every-bodies way. Its already happening in Spain, Germany, France and now UK. We're a little bit more used to it by now though so it doesn't seem so bad anymore. A few weeks ago, a few hundred new cases in Europe was a big deal, now its not.

We all took steps after seeing what happened to Italy. But it can take a few weeks for steps to have any benefit.

We're well on course to having thousands affected by the end of the month.
Despite the measures, Italy's numbers are still growing for now.

For me this is a very worrying development. Emergency legislation has a habit of always being too authoritarian and gives government agencies far more power than is warranted.

We're an open democracy without a history of authoritarian governments apart from the church.

These measures are correct and temporary.

1903 new cases in Spain today, 171 new deaths , and it's only noon.

    Lockdown not working

There will be a lag between the start of the lockdown and any effects it may have.

Similar to British media slamming Saint Patrick day parties. Instead of focusing on their government approach they strategically placed people in Green and portrayed them as the issue.

Right now, it’s more important to act as if we will be like Italy so everybody is extra vigilant. That includes telling off idiots for being idiots. This whole “stop scaring people” has to stop. There is a massive threat and people need to be averted to be on top of this.

Sorry but non essential mental heath (I need to be out) things need to be avoided. We are such a pampered society all we have to do is stay the f**k home. You can see people in this thread justifying things they don’t need to do but want to do. Why are they waiting until the authority’s force us to do what they won’t do? We know what’s probably coming (much stricter lockdown rules), why do people think it’s grand to go about their day relatively unconcerned until this is forced on us?

We're doing what the experts are telling us lad. We are following the advice of the CMO the HSE and their offices.

We have been told to apply social distancing and for the best part I think that is happening.

This is a dangerous mindset to get into. The fact that number are increasing does not mean lockdown isn't working. They haven't been in lockdown that long, and we have no idea what the numbers would be without the lockdown.

Sorry guys , best to ignore me, I am in Spain and my anxiety is off the chart

Numbers may be increasing due to more testing, as ours will.

Correct, a significant lag. There is also a lag between testing and results.

All the stats are a few days 'old' at the very least.

Do Spain not give their 24 hour totals at noon or is that just for today

Spain update at least 3 times daily

Hopefully you are ok. Just stay in and do as much as you can. Anxiety is a bad thing so make sure to do as much to relax yourself.

Can we not get a map of where the disease is spreading?
In South Korea they had an app where you could see.
    Something like the attached.

    My guess:
    - hospitals
    - airports
    - ports
    - train stations

Most likely Dublin is ground 0

I’m still amazed at how some people are still trying to downplay this. Some people won’t take this seriously enough until it hits them personally.

I know a person under 50 fighting for their lives in a coma right now. All the symptoms of Corona and just waiting for test result. Reading some of the lazy attitude to this is so concerning. A lot of people really don’t know what they are talking about and are not grasping how bad this is going to get.

Prevention is better then cure. Stay at home unless absolutely necessary. Take precautions. Wash your hands. Keep your distance. Think as though you could infect somebody else who might die from this. A decision you make could kill somebody. There is a difference between having to get shopping, to enjoying a nice chat with somebody face to face. Get in, get out of shops. Order online if possible (I’m going to order 2 weeks in advance now). My butchers have option to phone in advance and get food brought out to you in car park. I’m going to petrol station at night (if I need petrol) , preferably to use hatch. We can excercise in our kitchen (don’t need to go out) with our children or back garden if needs be.

There is an answer for everybody who thinks they need to go out. Most of us can get by at home if we put our minds to it. Just have to change that mindset from what you want or think you need, to what has to be done to slow down the spread.

    Cases in Iceland pass 400
That is over 0.1% of their population!

I don't think it's being downplayed at all, most people have now mentally processed the situation, they have adjusted and are calmer. On petrol, there is also the Pay at Pump option ,in Circle K at least.

As with everything that he says , it was mostly not true.

They have been using it , with some success in China and elsewhere since mid january , but it isn't a universal solution and has quite a few side-effects and risks.

The drug has not been approved by the FDA for Covid-19 treatment , nor is it "easily prescribed and taken" - Even a slight miscalculation in dosage can lead to death in a matter of hours so it absolutely positively could not be handed out over the counter and would have to be administered in a Hospital environment.

So - To clarify what Trump actually meant

A drug that has been in use elsewhere with some but limited positive effect on the Virus for 3 months has not yet been approved by the FDA and probably won't be any time soon ( in the context of this emergency) and even when it is, it's usage will have to be incredibly carefully controlled by medical professionals.
I think you are being overly pessimistic there. The drug has been approved for testing (of efficacy presumably), to confirm or otherwise the findings from China.

It goes without saying that it has to be prescribed/taken in controlled settings doses etc. There's no question of people buying them over the counter. I've heard it's easy to manufacture also. Drugs like this will be part of the solution, long before any vaccine is.

I think we should be careful to not completely dismiss everything Trump says. It's possible that he might sometimes say something that turns out to be right, at least partly.

Ghost planes so airlines don’t lose their slots in airports I was to fly yesterday to Canada, got text and email on what gate to go to and such so I am guess the flight still went ahead

Are airlines issuing refunds for passengers booked on those ghost flights?
Why hasn't there been a clamour from the airlines to suspend the need for the ghost flights since fuel is their main cost?

I thought it would spread like wildfire in somewhere like Dublin airport. But there's been no breakdown of cases there. Or anecdotal evidence of a cluster in Dublin airport. You'd also think cabin crew might be affected.

There definitely needs to be better reporting and exact locations of clusters. This helps people conduct their own contact tracing which will be crucial going forward.

Because we always are more ready to believe what we want to believe.
I really hope this will be the biggest anti climax I have ever experienced but the experience from Italy, France, Spain tells me this is just wishful thinking.

We have to Prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

Absolutely. I have no confidence in the HSE anymore. They've dropped the ball so many times. They are carrying out testing but what good is that if you don't hand over a mandatory isolation order to an infected person and if your contact tracing is likely inadequate.
