Why are people so certain what is happening in Italy is coming our way?

From all accounts and info available during the initial stages of this virus the Italians had zero social distancing policies in place and the general public mixed and socialised the same as always.

We have closed pubs and restaurants, schools and all sporting organisations have also been closed. People from what I can see are keeping their distance when out and about and the shops for the best part are also taking responsible measure.

Ok some people are going to continue to be idiotic as always but that doesn't warrant people calling for the army to be sent in our a sudden and total lockdown of basic services.

We have taken measure to ensure this thing doesn't get beyond our control. Let's wait and see what effect these measures have on the transmission. We won't know for a few days more and I'm betting people will be pleasantly surprised .
It's the graph that people seem to point to, but that's likely to be exponential initially and look similar anyway.

Really not. Cycled past 5 or 6 lads working out at the outdoor gym at clontarf seafront today, no gloves doing pull ups etc. People everywhere. Supermarkets with kids and people on top of each other.
Apart from schools being close and some business, life is going on as usual. That's why it's going to spread like crazy, and I don't think most people will take this seriously until it's up to 10,000 cases or so.

What is this obsession with gloves?

They are useless in this situation. Virus is spread by droplets not skin.

If virus was on gym equipment then it's on the gloves. It's the exact same as your hands. So if he washes his hands then there's no issue.

Also, the majority of people are taking it seriously but you can't see them as they're at home.

Life is not going on as usual. Schools closed, many shops closed, pubs closed, most restaurants closed, many people working from home, thousands lost their jobs due to closures, roads empty, public transport empty, chemists, supermarkets and food outlets only open and they're trying to enforce social distancing.
Everyone I know is taking it seriously, no social engagements, no parties etc.

You're always going to get people who don't get it and they will be very visible, like the old adage, "empty vessels make the most noises" so there is no need to think that these people represent the majority.

My first tomato plants started to sprout yesterday from the nice sun. I should get about 200 tomatoes or more if last year is anything to go by. Eamon is right, plant seeds, the more food the better.

What if you live in a 1 bed apartment with no garden? Can a couple of people survive long on windowsill produce? If only we had trained people who could work some sort of land to produce food.

and if we assume the virus was here well before march many would of have shown or had it already passed and recovered.

seems some are just waiting to see it get worse for their own messed up mental health where they feel better sitting at home getting dole, and running out to the shop, can only imagine this will have on our next generation who will need half year off every time someone has a sniffle.

Ignorance must be bliss. Best to you and yours. A sniffle. I'm starting to lose my patience with these people who are calling it a sniffle.

Hope you don't need the help of emergency services / a ventilator/ a necessary medicine. Actually I'm not sure now. Maybe you need to see it up close and personal to take heed. Watch out for the wave.

You can respond without making a counter accusation. Trump is acting like a child in a schoolyard responding to a slag. He could of just said it’s very unfortunate China said this and when this has been resolved they will do what needs to be done to get to bottom. Could of also asked for the evidence to back up what they are saying. Not “no way was it the US, they spread it first....”

That would be taking the high ground approach though. Something he proves incapable of every day.

1903 new cases in Spain today, 171 new deaths , and it's only noon.

    Lockdown not working

Takes at least 10-14 days for effects to become apparent!
    Lockdowns of course do work.

Stop and think what it would be like without the "lockdown".

This man was arrested, he was drunk and it was a college hazing type prank he was told to do. He also didnt have coronavirus. It was also in Belgium if anyone is interested to know

There's no harm in producing what you can either though, give it a go it's very satisfying!

Looking online, people requested tests on Saturday and are still waiting to be told a date today in Cork and similar from other people online. Seems to be a massive backlog here so could be a lot more people here then we think.

Do Spain not give their 24 hour totals at noon or is that just for today

Right now, it’s more important to act as if we will be like Italy so everybody is extra vigilant. That includes telling off idiots for being idiots. This whole “stop scaring people” has to stop. There is a massive threat and people need to be alerted to be on top of this.

Sorry but non essential mental heath (I need to be out) things need to be avoided. We are such a pampered society all we have to do is stay the f**k home. You can see people in this thread justifying things they don’t need to do but want to do. Why are they waiting until the authority’s force us to do what they won’t do? We know what’s probably coming (much stricter lockdown rules), why do people think it’s grand to go about their day relatively unconcerned until this is forced on us?

And hopefully we won't need a lockdown if our social distancing measure and shutting of social outlets works.

As Dr De Gascun has said we won't know how these measure have worked for a while yet.

To early to make decision about a total lockdown which will have a savage effect on people for years to come until the data is available.

They update regularly throughout the day, each area gives the update at a different time

So I just came into my closed down school in Dublin to check something (I can do this without coming into contact with anyone) and the walls and shutters have been destroyed with graffiti overnight. Going to cost me 100's to get that cleaned up again, at a time when I can least afford to fix this.

Great to see the spirit of togetherness in our time of greatest crisis is strong....

What type of losers find this 'activity' entertaining?

Lidl now closes at 9 PM.

    This is nationwide?

Whats happening in Italy is coming every-bodies way. Its already happening in Spain, Germany, France and now UK. We're a little bit more used to it by now though so it doesn't seem so bad anymore. A few weeks ago, a few hundred new cases in Europe was a big deal, now its not.

We all took steps after seeing what happened to Italy. But it can take a few weeks for steps to have any benefit.

We're well on course to having thousands affected by the end of the month.
Despite the measures, Italy's numbers are still growing for now.

For me this is a very worrying development. Emergency legislation has a habit of always being too authoritarian and gives government agencies far more power than is warranted.

We're an open democracy without a history of authoritarian governments apart from the church.

These measures are correct and temporary.

Similar to British media slamming Saint Patrick day parties. Instead of focusing on their government approach they strategically placed people in Green and portrayed them as the issue.

We're doing what the experts are telling us lad. We are following the advice of the CMO the HSE and their offices.

We have been told to apply social distancing and for the best part I think that is happening.

This is a dangerous mindset to get into. The fact that number are increasing does not mean lockdown isn't working. They haven't been in lockdown that long, and we have no idea what the numbers would be without the lockdown.

Sorry guys , best to ignore me, I am in Spain and my anxiety is off the chart

Numbers may be increasing due to more testing, as ours will.

Correct, a significant lag. There is also a lag between testing and results.

All the stats are a few days 'old' at the very least.
