Hopefully people realise they don't need to buy throwaway clothes from Penney's every 5 minutes. It's one of the biggest polluters in the world, this kind of fast fashion. Funny how we'd all be fine with the clothes we have for years if we couldn't buy any.
    Penneys have closed.

Btw whats the story about that Malaria drug that Trump was going on about, I had heard about it and was hopeful, but when Trump starts valling it the cure - you know somethings wrong ... :(

Ah well it is not just Trump you know. Scott Adams is also excited about it. And sure you can trust Scott Adams. He is not the type of person who would create sock puppets to use to go around the internet telling people Scott Adams is a "certified Genius" or anything. Oh - wait - he is. :)

But nah seriously - there are plenty of Anti Viral drugs in existence and we are of course going to test many of them on this new Virus. Some will show promise. Some will not. But we need stats rather than anecdotes on both their efficacy and safety before we roll out a program. Especially in a world where any whiff that a drug might be useful will result in profiteers buying up swaths of it to hold to ransom despite people needing it for it's original purpose like Malaria and so on.

So sit tight and hope but do not put too much stock in early reports just yet. It would certainly be nice if a public domain cheap existing drug turned out to be useful!

Other than the fact that Trump is going for the redneck vote with the "Chinese Virus" angle, yes China and any other nations operating the pathogen time bombs that are wet markets mixing wild and domesticated animals need to be shamed by the rest of the world and hit hard in the pocket if they don't ban them outright. We've known for many decades how bloody dangerous this practice is, yet here we are.

It's a mix of being hard wired not to panic, not being able to see the threat(literally and figuratively) and sadly a large percentage of low intelligence people. There are an awful lot of stupid people about that are classed as and even appear to be within "normal" parameters.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

Do people think trump is wrong to call it the China Virus ?

It's part of his propaganda effort. Gotta keep the Chinese as the new enemy in the minds of the more stupider Americans.

The rest of the world calls it the Corona virus or Covid-19. That cunt has to use his own label.

Can't say I'd care too much if it took him out at this stage. Better people have succumbed to it.

I can't see why he is getting stick for it , that's where it came from and they actively tried to blame it on American soldiers and they actively tried to hide it form the world for a month,

I can't for the life of me see why people are annoyed at Trump for taking a stand against China ,Sars also came from China about time someone started calling them out if they continue the way the have been what's next ? something worse than this could wipe out everybody ,

Because it helps nothing. At a time when we all need to work together to get through this Trump is looking to deflect attention from his own miserable failings on this (a lot of people are going to die, way more then would have happened had Trump not played politics and pretend this was a democratic hoax) and to try to make China the enemy. He is such a dangerous twat and he’s possibly the worst person to have as president of possibly the strongest country in the world during a crisis like this. He’s unhinged, uneducated in what needs to be done and motivated to find scapegoats (he was blaming Europe last week) which does nothing for everybody coming together to find a solution.

Just seen some absolute balloon on Sky News saying that the pubs should stay open, there is no sign of it being spread in pubs. It is the common sense approach he states.

This lad, allowed to spout this on Sky News. In ways the UK really deserve anything thats coming down the tracks at them but at the same time it will be the normal people that suffer. Not these absolute cabbages with a platform.

    It's quite unbelievable

The number of deaths in some countries surprised me, has really crept up
    10 Algeria, 7 Egypt, 18 Phillippines, 13 Iraq, 32 Indonesia, 7 Brazil, 37 in Belgium, 11 in Sweden

Some of these countries had almost no cases two weeks ago

Why are people calling for people not to go outside? We're not in official lockdown so people are entitled to go out if they wish.

I now live alone and am minimizing face to face contact. I'm working from home.

Have not had a conversation with a person since last Saturday. I now have a routine of going for a walk by the sea as part of my daily shopping trip. That way I get to see people and maybe have a safe chat with shop assistant. It gives me much needed exercise which will be more difficult in the coming weeks when the inevitable lock down is in place.

Yes, I have seen people of all ages not observing distancing but what do you expect . The vast majority of people are at home as witnessed by quiet roads, streets and public transport. There will always be idiots.

Either way it's perfectly safe to go outside and get exercise once distancing is observed and people should not be criticised for it as they need to get out for mental health and exercise reasons.
Its important for people to get some fresh air and this is much easier for some than it is for others. Even prisoners in maximum security prisons get time outside every day

The problem with cities is that there are few public spaces and they're over subscribed so will be crowded at peak times. People need to stagger their walks, Get up early, go for a walk at 6am, or late in the evening when it's quieter.

Most people won't do this, so peak afternoon times will always be busy, but by avoiding these times, you're doing a bit to protect yourself, your family, and also the community in general.

There may be a time when curfews or bans on leaving the house are in place but the more responsible we are now, the less likely we are to see such restrictions later.

Trump is just disingenuous by diverting his moronic supporters low iq to blaming China instead of his complete failure to react in time to prevent it from getting worse.

Bu he's not actually wrong blaming China is he

I don't know, and this is an awful way to think I think, but the fact that America are so affected by this also gives me hope. There will be so much money flung at this now to find a cure.

Maybe you should really be blaming the civil servants rather than the TDs? After all most of the incompetence is from civil servants who basically go on strike if their tea isn’t hot, plus the whole idea of upskilling seems to have been completely misunderstood by them and they see it as a opportunity to strike for a pay rise each time.
Case in point- the cops and the pulse system:
The recent IT staff who refused to work that expensive new printer that cost 800k because they needed a pay rise to upskill.

    Give over !!!

This pandemic is far more serious than your silly knocking the public service rant.

Things might be a lot better now if the Neoliberal agenda of ‘low tax’, 'privatization', ‘deregulation’ and ‘small government’ had not caused a chronic under-funding of our public health services. We might even have a hospital bed ratio comparable to our European neighbors.

This kind of debate is for another time... Fighting against the virus spread is all that matters now.

In all honesty I don’t care what he calls it. However he is using it as a ploy to deflect from the fact he blatantly lied from the beginning and allowed his braggadocio to get in the way actually facing reality.

Also it is causing Asians to be attacked. Most bizarre is a Brazilian girl getting abuse and assaulted by a guy on the Luas because she looks Chinese. What he calls it is irrelevant. What happens after isn’t.

You think Trump is to blame for something that happened on the Luas

Ghost planes so airlines don’t lose their slots in airports I was to fly yesterday to Canada, got text and email on what gate to go to and such so I am guess the flight still went ahead

If the flight isn't in the air, it won't get tracked on Flightradar. The transponder in the aircraft is what lets the site know where a given plane is at a given time.

I genuinely can't understand how/why people are hung up on how many infected we have.

"We're on track to be worse than Italy"

Really? How many tests had Italy administered at this stage after their first positive test or their first death? How many did we test that were counted with yesterdays figures? We don't even know what days were counted in yesterdays figures.

The only important number is number of deaths and amount in ICU. ICU being the main one because it has a direct relationship with the number of deaths. Everything else is just a guessing game. The virus could be anywhere from 0.2% to 3.5% death rate in those infected, we're purely speculating with anything else.

Let's focus on the positives, our first case was weeks ago, we now have 3 deaths and 7 in ICU. This is a hell of a lot better than where Italy were at this stage.

It seems people are looking for the negatives here.

Best post I have seen here in a while.

Quite bad I'd say. I'd be willing to bet that if this virus killed 50% of those infected, you would still have dribbling morons standing on top of each other in groups going on about "ah sure it's no harm". People can be thick, average or bright, but the Mob is always reactionary and often unbelievably stupid and needs leading and even force to keep it safe from itself.

Btw whats the story about that Malaria drug that Trump was going on about, I had heard about it and was hopeful, but when Trump starts calling it the cure - you know somethings wrong ... :(

As with everything that he says , it was mostly not true.

They have been using it , with some success in China and elsewhere since mid january , but it isn't a universal solution and has quite a few side-effects and risks.

The drug has not been approved by the FDA for Covid-19 treatment , nor is it "easily prescribed and taken" - Even a slight miscalculation in dosage can lead to death in a matter of hours so it absolutely positively could not be handed out over the counter and would have to be administered in a Hospital environment.

So - To clarify what Trump actually meant

A drug that has been in use elsewhere with some but limited positive effect on the Virus for 3 months has not yet been approved by the FDA and probably won't be any time soon ( in the context of this emergency) and even when it is, it's usage will have to be incredibly carefully controlled by medical professionals.

Can you show us the evidence that infected people that survive actually do acquire a long term immunity?

will the government tells us how many are in ICU,
That is probably the most important number to know ,
Currently 15 to 35 years olds are 2 /3rd of our infected ,we need to keep it like that ,

Absolutely, no problems at all in going out for walks in the open air.

Some of the bedroom-dwellers on this thread could do with a break away from their screens and the f5 key. A couple of hours in the fresh air would do them no harm and probably quite a bit of good.

There was some lad yesterday complaining about a couple throwing a Frisbee -

I'm going to continue living as normal a life as possible with some sensible precautions. The hysteria-merchants can spend the next couple of months curtain-twitching from their dark living rooms.
