Yes but I'm not sure the way it was done in France is a good thing. I know people in France who (I think) haven't yet fully grasped how serious the situation is, and they basically see that self-declaration thing as a licence to go out.

I.e. as long as they print the form and thick the box saying they are going out to exercise in the neighbourhood (it is one of the options) they feel like there is no problem to go out. It has became more of an administrative measure than a public health measure to them.
Maybe that will change with the new declaration?

March 4: “If we have thousands or hundreds of thousands of people that get better just by, you know, sitting around and even going to work — some of them go to work, but they get better.”

March 5: “I NEVER said people that are feeling sick should go to work.”

March 6: Anybody right now, and yesterday, anybody that needs a test gets a test. They’re there. And the tests are beautiful…. the tests are all perfect like the letter was perfect. The transcription was perfect. Right? This was not as perfect as that but pretty good.”

March 6: “I like this stuff. I really get it. People are surprised that I understand it… Every one of these doctors said, ‘How do you know so much about this?’ Maybe I have a natural ability. Maybe I should have done that instead of running for president.”

March 8: “We have a perfectly coordinated and fine tuned plan at the White House for our attack on coronavirus.”

March 9. "So last year 37,000 Americans died from the common Flu. It averages between 27,000 and 70,000 per year. Nothing is shut down, life & the economy go on. At this moment there are 546 confirmed cases of CoronaVirus, with 22 deaths. Think about that!"

March 13: "To this point, and because we have had a very strong border policy, we have had 40 deaths related to CoronaVirus. If we had weak or open borders, that number would be many times higher!"

March 13: "Today I am declaring a national emergency. Two very big words."

March 13. "No, I don't take responsibility at all. Because we were given a set of circumstances, given rules, regulations, and specifications from a different time. It wasn't meant for this kind of an event, with the kind of numbers that we are talking about."

March 16:"I give myself a 10 out of 10" (On handling Covid19 crisis)

March 17: “This is a pandemic,” Mr. Trump told reporters. “I felt it was a pandemic long before it was called a pandemic.”

Is unbelievably retarded when all put together like that

Feels like this voucher offer is their attempt to lock down people's money before that all happens. But the issue with a voucher (and a reschedule) is that I've no idea when it's going to be useful. Will this be over this summer? Or will it be next before I could even use any voucher? Will Aer Lingus even be a thing next summer, as depressing a thought as that is, if the airline industry crashes down?

I think your understanding of the situation is clear and correct. They want to lock-in your money as they know they are unlikely to run that flight (they probably would rather cancel it anyway).

Now if they offer you 10% extra it isn't necessarily a bad deal depending on the validity date for the voucher (I personally wouldn't even consider it if it wasn't at least one year, but I would prefer two years - plus as you said there is a risk of the airline not being able to deliver if they get into serious trouble, although I think governments will probably assist national airlines).

But it is very likely that the flight will eventually be cancelled and refunded to you in cash if this is what you prefer.

I had a non-refundable BA flight from Switzerland to Ireland with a layover in London yesterday (which I was not going to use). BA sent me an option to cancel for free in exchange for a voucher (but not 10% extra) 2 days before the flight. I waited a bit and eventually the evening before departure it was cancelled and I am getting a plain cash refund. Interestingly the cancel leg was London to Dublin, now Switzerland to London which I thought was the most likely.

    It may well be

But some will also be sick, or a family member sick and then have to self isolate for 14 days or longer. Financial hardship won't just come from job loss.

The best guess is that reported Italian total case figures are an order of magnitude lower than they really are. Meaning the total of actual cases in Italy has been more like 400,000 than 40,000.

The hope is that our 15,000 reported cases by end of month is far more indicative of the real number of cases, and isn't out by a factor of 10.
If 292 people were walking around with the virus for 2 weeks without even knowing it, Why wouldn't there be at least 30,000-50,000 cases?

if that is the case then it makes the mortality rate much lower as well.
in italy over the flu seasons 13/14 to 16/17 68,000 people died from flu in Italy, 22,500 per year on average. so far this flu has killed 3,000.

with a flu season of 150 days this gives an average death rate per day of 140 over those 3 years

the first case of this in italy was on the 15th of feb so from then to yesterday evening the covid 19 death rate is 94 per day.

Do you have a link for that figure of 68K? I seem to see a different figure for flu deaths varying by tens of thousands by different posters for UK/USA/Ireland/EUrope /the world

Sure, but think about it, each one of those trucks could transport what, 8 or 10 coffins. There's no way twenty trucks are being used as makeshift hearses. I think journalists who can be a tad eager to hype things up should dial that stuff back. But they won't. It sells.

I agree on the mask front. They would slow spread if everyone wore one. The problem is until supplies are replenished the doctors and nurses are the ones who really need them because they can't operate under social distancing. They're up close and personal. They need what supplies of masks there are first.

For the rest of us that don't have them the suggestion of a scarf or whatever wrapped around your nose and mouth would make some difference. Maybe more when compared to basic surgical masks which aren't a great fit.

Trump is an incompetent infantile orange f*ckwit who has totally mismanaged the american response to the pandemic.

They had less than 100 cases on March 3 while he was still downplaying the virus and ignoring reality.

They now have 9,464 cases and the curve is skyrocketing exponentially.

He deserves all the abuse which will be heaped on him. and more.

The population of the US is 300 odd million they have 9000 cases
The population of the Eu is 741 million. 74,000 cases.

Value of the Euro against which currency? If the ECB was acting in isolation you might have a point but it's not. Central banks the world over are doing the same thing, particularly the two key currencies for comparing the Euro against: the dollar and sterling.
fair point 3 strongest currencies will drop in value, if any more restrictions imposed who do you think will need to empty their pockets. Do a run down on countries like Spain Portugal or even Italy, how deep do you think they are now and how crippled the economy is, no tourists means they are facing unreal consequences for the season as is as its billions in GDP that arent coming in. Ireland does not rely on tourism much, but any jobs lost will put massive strain, as its even unclear how much already has been spent, and thats the money that someone will need to cover, banks dont write off anything on good will 2008 should be a good reminder.

it will be awhile before stats come out with economical fallout were faced and it wont be pretty.

Eh regardless of the Trump stuff, the EU has and is testing far more people than the US. It's also a couple of weeks ahead of the US in the trajectory of this pandemic. The European social health systems are also better placed to deal with something like this.

The drug Favipiravir seems to be helping if admistered early in the infection to people with mild to moderate symptoms, it's a few months away from being approved though.

Dr Aylward said something on the lines of “I can’t call into every house in China but from what is saw they are doing a great job”. Suppose if we all agree China was lieing from the start, maybe they equally lied about its effects elsewhere?!

To get really tinfoil hat, if it started kicking off elsewhere in China now they could blame foreigners for bringing it back in after they had eradicated it.... Is say they truth maybe somewhere in between but to be fair China have form at lieing on this so it would be unwise to completely rule out anything , but of course important not to presume one way or another without evidence.

Germany's stats are a pile of bollix too.

They claim that their total number of deaths due to COVID-19 is 31 but France's total number of deaths is 8.5 times higher even though France has 4000 less confirmed cases.

Another stat that sticks out is that Germany are claiming to only have 2 people in serious, critical condition.
