    It may well be

If this lasts for a long time, they might have to look into something like this. Without it, we're condemning a huge number of folk to a hardship they'll have extreme difficulty recovering from.

There's a real prospect of people's savings being wiped out with this. No job, no savings, no home, no future...

    Helicopter money alone won't help.

Ive learnt in past few days that lockdown aint going to work here unless enforced the actual amount of people out walking, cutting grass, talking to neighbours more or less the normal day except pubs bookies and certain places are shut the socialising is more or less still going on, some people just dont understand how its spreading or dont care either.

Cutting your grass and going for a walk as long as theres not a lot of people around shouldnt be much of a problem surely? Maybe avoid talking to your neighbours or being close to them while talking anyway

I think that might relate to a story about a home for the elderly which was ravaged by the virus.

No, not only that. Bergamo had 553 deaths because of this.
They were probably over 50 and smoked so you like fvck it. Let's not overreact to a few corpses. Could cause a depression and don't give people money via a truck or helicopter to relieve the burden. Cheers

FFS people find it hard to see 2 weeks into the future. This will happen here if we are not careful.

I sincerely hope that bit in bold was sarcastic...

We most certainly can shut down the economy. We'll get through it, so deal with the temporary inconvenience.
Enjoy a 3rd world economy for the next 5 years.

What the feck are you on about? I'm going to spend the spring and summer in my gardens and I may even go for a walk and just every so often talk to another human at a socially responsible distance.

Some people need to get a grip on their dystopian mindset.

You can isolate the old and vulnerable, not shut down the entire economy and cause a 1929 level depression.
Most people in their 50s will survive it, there will be the odd case of someone who is a heavy smoker or is already sick in some way dying.

You are so brave, willing to let the old or people who are already sick die.

Thank you for your sacrifice.:mad::mad:

Do I need to? You only have to read or listen to dozens and dozens of reports of how many under 70s are in hospitals with this virus.

If people have no income, what will they use to pay mortgages, rents and bills with? Plus buy food and whatnot.

    This isn't difficult to understand.

Is there a particular number of deaths that will make it worthwhile? Anything over 100, 1000? If ‘only’ a certain amount die will it not have been worthwhile.

Generally it will be worth if the person knew concretely that one of their loved ones would get it and die. If those people could see into the future then I'm guessing they would think it's worth it.

Alternatively let them have some skin in the game. Get them to sign waivers to hospital treatment for themselves and family if they become infected. That really would be a cull and probably improve the gene pool. Alas we live in a democracy where everyone has "a right" and a wrong. Some mores than others.

I suppose when it's all over we will question whether this was worth shutting down our economy, making 200k people unemployed and putting the country back into recession for years to come.

What exactly would you propose by way of an alternative strategy?

I don't disagree with the gist of your post, but what on earth is the problem with cutting the grass?

He clearly said isolate the old ( to help them)
The young can still go about there business and keep the country afloat,
Much like the young went to war two generation ago to keep the world we knew ,

I'm sure most people would be happy to pay the price of a years subscription to Sky Sports for a cure now.

That's because we pay a high price for scarcity... Ronaldo and Messi have skills that are rare in their particular field.

Probably even more rare than scientific talent. (although depends on the field of study)

But this woman does raise a very salient point, about what we choose to put value on in our society!

Perhaps this pandemic might highlight these discrepancies and change how we operate as a society?

But then how do you pay every scientist/doctor/nurse/firefighter etc the money they really deserve? (and all of them certainly deserve much more for what they do!)

It is true that some kid running around kicking a ball (which they would probably do for fun/hobby anyway), should not be paid such obscene amounts of money! It is bonkers tbh!

the cavalier attitude of people flying in the face of the people in the health service who are giving their all in this crises.

I know I sound like an auld curmudgeon but this crisis is really highlighting how many stupid or selfish people live among us.

Its one of the more depressing aspects of this crisis. The amount of people in Ireland who really don't give a damn about anyone else anymore. The last 30 years of some people milking the system and scamming other people at every opportunity, without any reprisal has produced this attitude. Parts of the system from top to bottom are rife with corruption and selfishness.

Mortgages are to be frozen. Most people still working. If not then they get 200 euro a week. Buy groceries and wait it out like suggested.

What else do you need the money for? Planning on a new car or a holiday? How about a shopping spree?

    Genuinely curious about this...

Giving what we know and with the information we have, with a BALANCED VIEW, when do others see places like Cafes, Bars, Clubs, Barbers etc opening back up?

Enjoy a 3rd world economy for the next 5 years.

The economic scaremongering by completely unqualified amateur "economists" is ten times worse than any of the alleged scaremongering about the extent of the virus.

There is no reason whatsoever to expect that Ireland would be a third world economy for the next five years.
