It more to keep businesses going so when this crisis is over people have jobs to go back to so they can pay mortgages, rents and bills.

No businesses = No jobs = No vat = less government money to spend= no money for hap, welfare etc.
    You get the idea

If people can't buy anything because they have no money after being broke from forking out their last few shillings on a mortgage/rent they cannot pay, the result is the same.

Have you read anything by Italian doctors?
That older people were dying there was because they were trying to save the lives of the 40 to 70 group.

The Italian doctors were being forced into battlefield triage - deciding who would live and who would die.
Which is what every other health system is trying to avoid.

They are going to freeze mortgage payments. Any helicopter money would be for day to day spending. I don't know why you are arguing with me. I'm just passing on what McWilliams said.
Less businesses functioning means less jobs. You won't pay your mortgage if you don't have a job.

Surely paying families directly in the USA is merely a reflection of how threadbare their social welfare safety net is?

Do you know how quotation marks work? - it's ok to say you don't.

Still avoiding the question, I see.

The British were going to implement what you and others here are calling for now.

Why did they row back on it?

Are you willfully ignoring the news?

Have you seen what is happening in Italy? Do you know that people in their 50s that need a respirator to survive are being denied one because it is needed by someone younger?

This is why there is a crisis. It is probably coming to Ireland, the US, the UK, etc. It is already in Spain.

Our public health system can't cope if it is that bad here.
You can isolate the old and vulnerable, not shut down the entire economy and cause a 1929 level depression.
Most people in their 50s will survive it, there will be the odd case of someone who is a heavy smoker or is already sick in some way dying.

exactly - the italians hit that "italian curve" peak. which has really skewed the information circulating about Corona. ( it only affects over 70s )

Yeah sounds exactly like what happened with quantitive easing. I guess you like that though.

The difference between QE and MMT is that QE injects the printed money into the financial economy whereas MMT attempts to inject printed money into the real economy (which takes a while in times of crisis as people will first tend to save, but will work eventually).

And inflation pops-up where the money goes: asset prices inflation with QE and consumer prices inflation with MMT.

    Has this been posted already?

Army lorries had to be deployed to remove the coffins of those who died recently in Bergamo, the local crematorium couldn't deal with the huge numbers. They had been temporarily kept in the church.

I think that might relate to a story about a home for the elderly which was ravaged by the virus.

No bank payments whatsoever for 3 months if you've lost your job or closed a business due to coronavirus
At 3 months its reviewed to see if that's still needed
    It may well be

The people saying just do everything as normal must have no older family members, care more about money or are narcissistic.
Whatever it is your making yourself look like a prick.

    Here is Bergamo in Italy

I suppose when it's all over we will question whether this was worth shutting down our economy, making 200k people unemployed and putting the country back into recession for years to come.

They were probably over 50 and smoked so you like fvck it. Let's not overreact to a few corpses. Could cause a depression and don't give people money via a truck or helicopter to relieve the burden. Cheers

FFS people find it hard to see 2 weeks into the future. This will happen here if we are not careful.

We haven't shut down the economy though. Nowhere close

Ive learnt in past few days that lockdown aint going to work here unless enforced the actual amount of people out walking, cutting grass, talking to neighbours more or less the normal day except pubs bookies and certain places are shut the socialising is more or less still going on, some people just dont understand how its spreading or dont care either.

We most certainly can shut down the economy. We'll get through it, so deal with the temporary inconvenience.

That's all perfectly fine with proper social distancing.

Better to have 200k still alive than unemployed.

Jobs will come back when this is over.

Is there a particular number of deaths that will make it worthwhile? Anything over 100, 1000? If ‘only’ a certain amount die will it not have been worthwhile.

Some will pen articles on the cost but in the main we'll accept it, it's not 2008 and the banks. The unemployment will reverse very quickly but it's the huge sums that have to be spent on this that may affect things for quite a while. I don't know about years but quite probably up to a year.

They papered over 2008 and now the virus gives them an excuse to fix the underlying problem.
Evey boomer's failing business was being propped up, it's only mergers and acquisitions because nothing was happening other than printing money for the already rich. It used to be illegal to buy your own stock.
After this 1929-style crash we will end up with a more sane economy.
