It's travel that spread it widely in Europe, so when you look at USA you'd have to wonder what is going to happen over there.

I think this is very different to 2008. The threat to consumer and market confidence comes from a virus. If the virus can be beaten back, confidence should return quickly.

I think this is worse than 2008. In 2008, a big part of the reason we fell apart was we were building too much housing and it was too easy to get a mortgage. Anybody who wanted had a house to live in, as we had truly been booming for nearly 20 years.

A lot of people in 2020 have just about managed to pick themselves up from last recession, and were entering this next one in a housing crisis. Forget about the rebuilding Ireland, etc etc. Tax receipts for March/April will be enough to put an end to major projects before they even get off the ground

I think a stint on a respirator is a horendous thing to contemplate regardless of how old you are and even more so for those who smoke or the vapourisors among us

Perhaps the younger generation should think about that

Yes! Not easy to quantify it but the scientists think it is 100% possible to slow the virus using the steps already announced (and to slow it even more with more drastic steps).

They're recording for example a cancer patient who has caught covid, and dies as cancer being the cause.

If I'm understanding correctly = if ireland uses same recoridng criteria as Germany we would have 0 deaths.

I just got off the phone to him. He is watching Belgravia on ITV and spending the night in Chequers. Early chopper to Downing Street in the morning.

He bitched about you... he said he reckons you are clueless.

2 weeks from now? Not a hope, sure the Cheltenham crowd will be in the depths of it by then and damage control from that.

We are probably looking at 3 months minimum.

The virus gets into the main server which then broadcasts it to users logged in through wired mice and keyboards

By order of the government to save bandwidth for facebook and whatsapp. They'll be used for official communications from now on. All other sites ordered to close.

The lockdown nutters dont seem to have basic reasoning.

    1. A soft curfew that forces all businesses to close at 6 will probably happen. With EVERYWHERE closed I dont think many people will be out after dark anyway and wouldnt really been strict enforcing.

    2. The Army isnt going to be patrolling the streets making sure you are in doors. The army will be put to better use providing support for the health service and other key infrastructure

I don't think this will happen anytime soon but I don't know why people think it is completely beyond the realms of possibility. I know someone living in Spain where this is now their reality day to day.

    On rumours and bulls#t...

One of the most interesting things emerging from this crisis to date is the sheer amount of rumours that develop in each country. Rumour mongering was widespread in China, which is no surprise, given the distrust of government. The most famous one is that this virus was engineered by the US (though this rumour seems to have had some official backing in China, which is no surprise).

99% of rumours in these sorts of crises have no grounding in fact at all. However, I do think a more significant lockdown is coming. Issue is what exactly does a “lockdown” mean? A lockdown is an absolute state of affairs and only two countries have come close to it so far - China and Italy. People were allowed out in a controlled way to get food so it was not a total lockdown. There is a spectrum here and bit by bit we have been moving along that spectrum. So I wouldn’t be surprised if more extensive “lockdown” measures continue to be introduced over the next few days, bit by bit. Restaurants will close, perhaps curfews of some sort and then we will be required to stay at home in the way Spanish people are now being required. Of course, the Gardai and Army are doing significant planning at the moment about maintaining order in a situation of this sort. Looting is an age old problem in periods of crisis. Of course they are having meetings about this. The fact that these meetings are happening is causing people to jump to conclusions.

Unfortunately to a limited degree cos punters have to go to the pub, Cheltenham, Anfield, Old Trafford etc

For some reason autospell was insisting on Enfield on the above list. Maybe knows more than it's letting on!

Ugh thats what China originally were doing in the beginning, recording covid deaths as pneumonia or organ failure.

Im super surprised at Germany being this lax in their medical reporting, the main cause of death should always have any underlying or affecting conditions tacked onto it.

Not long in from a shift working in prison. The prisoners are actually showing some fantastic order and it's weirdly pleasant. They accept visits are culled. They accept things are tough outside. They're even doing that elbow to elbow gesture instead of the usual ''bro'' handshake with each other and wishing the officers well on top of that. It's a funny old world in there.

    Probably planning an escape.

Aren't pubs closing from midnight anyway?

It was initially being reported that the order comes from special legislation and is a requirement, it has become clear that it is only a request from the Government. Now this is a tricky one because if it has not been Legislated, there is no enforceable requirement to do so. See request here https://www.gov.ie/en/press-release/20fc58-all-pubs-advised-to-close-until-march-29/

The Gardai are in an awkward situation as if there is no public order issue or breaches of Directions with regard numbers then they can’t arbitrarily shut it down. There appeared to be no policing of numbers in Temple Bar last night so there may be some wiggle room.

But even if they did close the bar at midnight. (Some reports do say closing time so if a late licence could be 2), there will be kick out time. Then as there is no place to go, large crowds will probably loiter as taxis will be few and far between.

But, the pr1cks (whoever directed the opening) are scum with no disregard for anyone.
