They sure are. It was a bit saddening this morning when we watched our local mass on line and prayed together at home. Kind of made it all very real and a bit scary.

Would you mind asking Jesus or whoever to stop all this?

Russia literally has a huge border with China but they have a lot less cases then Ireland despite having about 30 times the population.

Why? When they first got wind of a the Wuhan outbreak, they quarantined EVERYONE coming into the country for two weeks, no questions asked (it's something like that). Meanwhile Ireland was saying they couldn't ban Italians from coming here on a plane for the laugh despite banning the rugby, because "it wouldn't be constitutional".

It's on their heads that a lot of Ireland's deaths will be.

Ah now in fairness... the Russian figures are horse manure.

    They're in complete lockdown.

    But yeah let's believe Putin

They really should close big shopping centres like Dundrum.
Kids off schools will just hang out there in large numbers and spread everything amongst themselves.

Think it's only a matter of time to be honest

Am I misunderstanding this or did we shutdown schools etc at an earlier phase than Italy and Spain?

Essentially what I'm asking is if the Italy/Spain growth is inevitable here or can we still contain it to relatively lower levels?

Shutting down the schools is only helpful if the kids don't go out and play/socialise with each other. And that isn't happening at the moment. Kids need to be kept away from other kids and parents need to see that happens.

And yes, it's a poxy task but these are poxy times.

Our hope isn't to contain it, it's to slow it down so that the hospitals won't be overwhelmed by thousands of cases at the same time, because we can cope with a slow stream of patients, but not with thousands at the same time.

If you name the town then just like the mass panic you saw for the bog rolls, there'd be a bigger mass exodus out of the infected area spreading the infection elsewhere.

Yes. that's why enforced quarantine is needed. At this stage it could be done on a city or a few hotspot towns/villages.

It would appear Blanchardstown is shutting down tomorrow evening and staying shut.

What stopping people from walking into ticking bomb? If you don't name the town, village or city you don't what is happening there. Revealing, how the 40 people got it, and where will stop further spread in the community.

What will slow further spread in the community is if people work on the assumption is that the virus is already circulating locally, even if only at a low level (but rising). If people recognise this and follow the advise re social distancing, hygiene, self-quaranting, etc., they will restrict the spread.

We only know the identified cases. There will be many more about. If people think it is not about locally because of no officially identified cases then they have a false sense of security.

Not a soul around the shopping centre today. Usually a lot of traffic coming and going but was pleasantly surprised today.

Will be interesting to see how the corporates behave around the virus

Their loyalty is to their bank balances, so be interesting, fûck the directors into the joy, get on tv now and say that will be the consequence.

Don't want selfish pricks spreading this around for the sake of getting pissed.

It would seem the Government agrees.

Having a quiet drink at home just now.
Bottle of beer and small whiskey.
    No threat to anyone, honestly.

There are a lot of people posting here with dogged determination to distance themselves from their "you're being hysterical" posts last week. Many of them weren't convinced of anything having seen those videos. Showing them this week to people I know who have not been taking this seriously, I was met with the same type of attitude.

    By way of explanation, I'll adapt the Elbow lyric I posted a few weeks ago;
"It's easy to ignore until they're welding shut the door of your homes".

Excellent use of Leaders of the Free World squire.

Speaking on the Six One, Mr Coveney said that there were between 20,000 and 25,000 Irish people currently in the Canaries, on the Balearic Islands and in mainland Spain. WOW!

There's a team making calls on this and their approach is to apply measures as they feel they are required. I don't know if we'll end up like Italy or Spain, I don't believe we will but we do seem to be managing the crisis in a measured way.

TBH lad, you are quite clearly a Fine Gael Party Member, if Harris starting coughing on people you'd put a spin on it.

They will get praise when it's due and criticism otherwise.

Not a place or a time for fans boys and spinning.

Were people dying during prohibition? Also poor straw man because booze is still easily available so if you are that addicted buy and drink at home

Its more your stance of revoking every license of pubs that remain open, many of them in rural areas that will never recover from a loss of revenue, that I was picking up on.

Wouldn't put it past Harris to get the Off licences to limit per person buying, or to close on certain days.

Probably not a bad idea till after Tuesday if there are a lot of idiots planning parties

I'm of the same mind, people aren't really worried as it happening somewhere else and unbeknownst them that it could be on there own doorstep.

If it reported 12 cases in Middleton Cork, pretty sure people would take more care

The opposite of this is also true. A lack of reported cases in a certain are might give people a false sense of security and lessen social distancing. Just assume it's everywhere and act accordingly.

Yeah, there are roughly 1.6 million trips from Ireland to Spain annually.
So, basically 1 in 3 people in Ireland will have been in Spain this year.

Fcuk them. If they were silly enough to go there during the week let them find their own way home.

Lots of Irish people live in Spain, including my parents. They've decided to stay there.

I hadn’t known they were transferring people out... That’s a lovely human gesture but I don’t think it is the right call.

This week, 40 patients were transferred from Lombardy to ICUs in other regions. There is a special program managing this process.

In a Country, when a region or city is under strain, the others share the load.
