2 mini marathons going ahead today in the UK in Liverpool and Bath, with 6,000 and 12,000 participants respectively. What are they thinking?
Is it that in the rush to reassure people that it’s actually bred complacency in those without underlying health conditions?

We can answer that question in about 6 months time

In terms of the infection rate, we're actually worse, it's the eventual death rate that will be most telling.

Note - some are not totals for the day because a lot of countries give results through the day.

Germany, France and Spain full figures finished around 8 pm our time.

Switzerland, like Ireland only gives results once a day.

Well, if you don't see anyone and don't touch anything someone else might have touched and infected then you're pretty safe.

I don't live in such a rural idyll so, for me, going out involves bumping into lots of people, hence my different choice.

Thanks. When you say don't touch anything - we'd often collect fallen twigs and branches - how could virus get on them?

Switzerland +842 cases, 1 new death today.

Daily nearly quadruple. Obviously new tests methods

Of course I have, I am aware of how primitive he is. However this only came out hours ago, even by his standards it would be extraordinary. I will wait and see.

I was surprised today when I went for a drive. I went expecting a ghost town but I was very wrong. Driving along the Clontarf seafront and onto Causeway Road the place was as full as any good summers day. Ireland has been asked to practice social distancing but as of yesterday the country was also given slightly contradictory messages that we can continue to spend time outdoors, by yourself or with your kids - walking or playing in open spaces are both safe as long as respectful social distancing and hand hygiene are maintained.

I think the photo attached shows that people are not respecting any real type of social distancing. No shock to this forum. I know the picture shows cars but I didn't want to go taking photos of randomers out walking. I expect the country will have to be locked down soon to slow the infection rate.

You can’t blame people , everyone is trying to get fresh air and they don’t know that so is everyone else . We went for a drive up the Dublin mountains today and it was jam packed . We didn’t even get out of the car as there were too many walking . But we were also there so we can’t be cross with others who had the same thoughts

The fascination with bashing the UK over COVID-19 on this thread is eye opening. All anti Brexit posters too no doubt, there has to be a link.

You have a fascination with posting the same **** all morning.

And yes the UK stance is moronic. They'll come to their senses yet.

Just trying to be seen to be different.

Is it true France has only had +30 new cases today??

    Germany added 827, looks odd.

France has not reported it's cases yet.

German states report through the day until roughly 8 pm.

Haven't had time to read back at the minute, but something occurs to me.

Regarding the UK approach and ours, politics should NEVER come in to it now. Shut up SF, shut up Arlene, do what is best for YOUR community and for us here down South.

But am getting a tiny feeling that Arlene is not for turning against UK policy on this.

Calm, cool, rational, and empathetic heads are needed now from the Assembly. We are an Island Nation. I get it that the Unionists want to follow Britain, but there comes a time when the good of all has to prevail..... This is not political, and it could be life saving.
Think they're caught in a vice in the North, London will not provide funding for countering impact of any measures take that are not in line with current government policy.

Is Ireland working on a Vaccine ? I thought we had the best of the best biopharmaceutical companies in the world?

We are more pharmaceutical than bio in this country and even at that we are more production than R&D.

Does anyone know if you have a blocked nose, sneezing could this be Covid 19 or is it more likely just a cold. Don’t want to be ringing up wasting peoples time looking for a test when I suspect a cold but I have this 4 days now. I take paracetamol to help but I don’t have a temp.

Self isolate and goto bed with a hot toddie and paracetamol, if it worsens then worry about getting tested

I'm trying to balance against the moronic tricolour waving idiots on here, when the enemy is the virus and it alone. It's like the richer neighbour causing jealousy and stupid posts. I'll call it out all day. No one is perfect, we're all going to suffer, and let's see how quickly we get out of this mess.

    Lads and Ladies.

Ventilators. How hard can they be to manufacture in big numbers. Why isn't global production of these ramped up to thousands daily?

Anyone have any insight into these ?

Rather stand in a dole queue than queue for a ventilator. I'd take our action over there's any day.

The fu*kwit British government are backpedaling fast on their lunatic ideas about 'Herd Immunity' and infecting 60% of the population.

Matt Hancock, their Secretary of State for Health, is doing the rounds of the chat shows this morning, to deny that 'Herd Immunity' was part of their strategy. However the damage may already have been done, because it will take one to two weeks for the effects of their criminal stupidity to be seen.

That Sir Idiot Vallance, their chief government scientist, and whoever else came up with this crazy notion have a lot to answer for.

Watch out for the Crufts and Cheltenham spikes of infected people next week.

The BIG problem is that Ireland has also been severely damaged by their monumental pompous ineptitude.

The words British government, pissup, brewery and organize come to mind.

He may be saying that's not the goal, but look at what they're doing and planning:
No school closures, more or less business as usual, and vulnerable people will need to isolate themselves for four months, starting 'within weeks'.
i.e. if you're over 70, stay at home from late March / start of April until at least the start of August.
Meanwhile, the epidemic will continue through people not self-isolating - i.e. the younger, less at risk people - and die out once herd immunity is achieved, at which point it will become safe for older people to leave their homes again.

That's still the UK govt plan for now, and that's what I've been telling my parents, who are over 80 and in England. Right now I don't expect to be able to go over to see them until autumn, so I'm calling them every couple of days and will be doing that over the coming months, trying to pass on the best advice I've heard or figured out as things change from day to day.

In terms of the infection rate, we're actually worse, it's the eventual death rate that will be most telling.

Given that there's a two week lag between infection and showing symptoms and that tests don't detect cases until they are symptomatic.

Policies have been introduced in the last few days. We don't really know what's going on in any real way.

The UK chief medical officer said the other day that he suspects there is 10k undetected cases in the UK. We don't know what's going on.

I think Italy have had the virus months, even as far back as last November/December, they just never knew it.

Know we now (from genomic data) that the virus was introduced early in Europe, with early cases in the Netherlands and Germany which appear to have been the main gateways thanks to the busy airport hubs.
There was also a death in Valencia on the 13 February.
The cases in Italy originated from the Bavaria outbreak at the end of January.
