Look at France's stats over 50% of those in ICU are under 62, gonna take some advice from an auld boy I met during the week, kill it with whiskey it's what he did in '62.

France is another heavy smoking nation, having tried one of their most popular brands Gauloises its a very strong nicotine dose, so there's your answer I reckon.

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

Naggdefy isn't trying to cause panic. The figures he/she mentioned are conservative. Unfortunately we are looking at a large number of deaths in this country if we don't slow down the spread rate. The country will be on a full shutdown like Spain by the end of the coming week in all likelyhood. Resteraunts and bars/cafe's will shut in the next 48 hours in my opinion.

No need to panic though, access to food shops and pharmacies will be kept open.

agree. i believe that this weekend has proven to the government that the population are not capable or to be trusted to folllow the guidelines issued late last week. therefore they've been given no choice but to implement a complete lockdown of the country. it could be that we'll all be confined to our homes in the coming days

Obliterated me h#@e,.I will confidently say that Ireland will come out the far end of this better than anywhere in mainland Europe.. Also remember only a small percentage of the population will get the virus and an even smaller percentage of those people will die..

People keep saying this, and it's getting very annoying now to read this type of ill-informed BS!

The normal flu kills about 200-500 people on average in this country every year... a very bad year on this Island would be max 1,000 deaths from the flu.

If even very modest estimates with Covid 19 are accurate, we will see many times those numbers over the next few months!

    20K+ conservative estimate.

Worst case estimates are probably not even worth contemplating, but you could easily see 3 or 4 times that number!

You're not doing anyone any favours, by pretending this is not a big deal. You need to better inform yourself on the stats, or just listen to the many people on here who know how bad this is/potentially might be!

Stop spreading misinformation - we need everybody to take this seriously and change their lifestyles for next few weeks. Maybe even months. It's the difference between life and death!

I hope they are all ok

Thank you...they are all ok all isolated from others..both kids were out of school from Monday last week as a precaution.
You might jump to conclusions because of my opinions but I'm not some fcuking thick who would pass it off as nothing...i just don't think it's as serious as people are making out.

Serious but manageable...its not the disaster some on here seems to think it is.

    90k-200k will die in Ireland?

Do a wee bit of research on the percentage of people the virus will effect. Then research death rates from a few sources.

Google ROI population 2016 census. Then do the maths.

The Irish attitude, I want someone to do the calculations for me and then I'll say they are wrong. Kinda comes back to the idea of personal responsibility and being able to stand on your own two feet.

there was a dose going around there a month or two ago, a lot of people got it, I got it, but i doubt it was Covid19, shur this time next year, everyone in the country will be saying they got it, and it was no worse than a cold....

I'll suspend disbelief and believe your research for a moment. In what timeframe will these people die?

well, the figures we have data for, are well short of 20%... and I'm not saying it'll be all good, but I'm very skeptical of a 'herd immunity; approach, that the UK seem to be taking

The Australian PM has expressed concern at the number of cases in his country originating from the United States.

Also announces everyone entering Australia must self isolate for 14 days.

This is from 2 weeks ago, is it different? Do you have a link? Definite reinfection? Or never truly cleared the virus?

These are the countries with over 1,000 cases so far. I'm excluding the ones below 1,000 because the margin of error dramatically increases below 1,000.

I've included the median age of these countries and calculated the case fatality rate

Country | Median Age |Cases | Deaths | Case Fatality Rate
    Germany| 47.1 | 4,267 | 8 | 0.18%
    Italy |45.5 | 21,157 | 1,441 | 6.81%
    Spain |42.7 | 6,043 | 191 | 3.16%
    Switzerland | 42.4 | 1,375 | 13 | 0.94%
    South Korea | 41.8 | 8,162 | 75 | 0.91%
    France |41.4| 4499 | 91 | 2.02%
    UK | 40.5 | 1,140 | 21 | 1.84%
    Norway| 39.2 | 1,055 | 2 | 0.18%
    USA| 38.1 | 2,977 | 60 | 2.01%
    China |37.4| 80,844 | 3,199 | 3.95%
    Iran |30.3 | 12,729 | 611 | 4.80%

I posted to show that despite Germans being older than Italians, they have much lower case fatality rate. Doesn't make any sense since most deaths are pensioners.

they said theyll probably start giving figures by county on monday, probably so individuals can't be identified solely by region

Lads re. Timeline of deaths etc. Plot the figures to graph. We're looking at a tough few months. If we flatten the curve we'll cope better.

Listen to Kermit. He has an analytical brain. I criticised him a week ago as I thought he was revelling in the 'event'. I took it back though. He's just being factual and keeping all informed.

I have chest problems and had pneumonia. I'm doing all the right things. Not in the least worried about my mortality. Would be more about my 90 yo mam.

It is what it is. Try and not spread the thing. Laugh every chance you get. And it always could be worse..the Black Death or Nuclear War.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,031 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

    Story from the US.

I'm living in Boston at the moment. A friends housemate, who works in a hospital felt unwell with respiratory symptoms while at work during the week and the hospital sent them home. They decided to return home to their parents house in another state so as to minimize the risk to the large number of people who they shared a house with.
Before they did this, they went to their Dr and was tested for both flu strains, but not tested for the CoVid virus because they did not meet the criteria, which is that they had come in contact with a known infected person, or that they had recently returned from an virus hot spot abroad. They were told they likely had pneumonia or bronchitis and were prescribed antibiotics and sent home.
They rang their dad to tell them they were coming home and were told not to come. The reason being that their patents will not have health insurance until the Dad's probation period at work ends in about 5 weeks and so they cannot afford to need serious medical care.

So, in a place that sees itself as the best country in the world and repeatedly tells everyone this, a person in a coVid hotspot (as Boston is somewhat) with respiratory symptoms and who had been working in a hospital, was not tested even though had sought medical care for a condition which was thought to be possibly 'only' pneumonia.
And, that persons middle class parents had to turn away their son from recuperating at their home because of the fear of the financial impact should either of them pick up some form of serious illness.

I am lucky enough to have (what I think is) decent medical coverage which only costs 6k/annum for the same sort of coverage as I get back home in Ireland for 1kE.
Hopefully, one outcome of this, might be that they, as a country will wake up and realise that they need to listen to what Bernie Sanders is saying in relation to healthcare for all and to swing to give him the Democratic nomination to challenge him who must not be named.
The current President shut down the Pandemic office, just two weeks ago called the virus a Hoax and earlier this week, announced financial support for the Oil energy due to falling prices. When the stock market started to tumble this week also, 1.5T (Trillion!!) dollars was found in order to be injected in to the economy to try to prevent some form of disaster.

And yet, part of me fears that if the numbers of those who contract the virus and who die as a result of it is less than what is being predicted, then many will say it was an over reaction and that there shouldn't be any dramatic changes made.

Separately, Boston schools have announced that they will be closed until the end of April which leads me to think that someone knows that this is indeed going to continue to escalate in a serious way for some time yet.

    Yea it's crazy
I think the British are playing with fire going the herd immunity route.

Australian pm was on the phone with Boris last night, so he said in a live address today. He also said closing schools would cause issues with herd immunity so now we know the route he wants to go down.

Getting resistance from the state premiers I hope
