Ok this is odd because The Car Crew in Sandyford had this for sale only last week for €5950, this is for sale nearly 5 years now I first looked at it in 2015 in Swinford but it's being tossed around since! I'd love to know why it's being sold so cheap....

No tax in 4 years and no test since 2019...

If you want to sell the plate on the car you have to apply to the DVLA for a retention certificate for the plate. you have to do that while the car is in the country. and the car would have to be registered in your name at an english address which might be tricky for you.

That makes it more confusing as it was only purchased last week! If you follow this thread you might remember me viewing that Car in Mayo but the dealer was a d1ck... Not a lot goes wrong with them in fairness...

Last week ABS sensor that cost €40 quid fitted, PDC sensor before that and a TPMS sensor that I haven't got around to yet!

Its been for sale for a while, pretty sure I saw it a few months back.

Missing a few things although but they come fairly loaded as standard in the UK, other nice options rear tables, rear DVD, heated steering wheel and can't tell if it has the rear phone or panoramic roof.

The price is good and I'd say its well maintained. Only issue is whats the VRT going to be if bringing back into the republic. I was budgeting 8-14k for VRT.

Spec in my one for ref, took me nearly 12 months to find it.

I'm amazed at how many of these cars stay unsold in the UK, considering the sheer size of the market over there, the cheaper motor tax, the more favorable attitude towards motoring by the public and the amount of wealth to boot.

I've seen countless Flying Spurs, 760Lis, S600s sit for months on end. I'd be all over them if it wasn't for the VRT lottery, virtually all of them have been removed from the calculator.

Sometimes its a case of finance companies saying no. In the UK you can hire purchase almost anything under 15 years old, however finance companies work on weird voodoo logic, you could get a 2008 s600 on finance for 260 pounds a month say , if your credit is good and computer says yes. However , if the company determines that your area is high risk for the car (s600 knightsbridge - yes , s600 sheffield council estate - no) , if the car has been previously reposessed, if the garage has a bad reputation with the finance company , theyll all flag the rejections on the system, other finance companies have access, see a rejection or two and just stay away from a perfectly good car just incase. UK hire purchase voodoo keeps a lot of those cars sitting in place waiting for a cash buyer which the uk people aren't fans of cash buying motors.

These uber barges aren't for the faint hearted either as they can bring eye watering bills. Here's an example of the thought process on them. Ironically I didn't find this thread until after I'd actually test drove this exact car in January.

    https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=1807179

I just checked and its still for sale. Its an honest car. Excellent history fro the last 40k miles. Can't believe its still available. I have loads of info on it of anyone is interested. Might need new rear drop links or bushes or something. Rear suspension rattle but apart from that a solid car. I nearly bought it but the VRT put me off as I reckon I'd have been into the 20-25k range by the time I got it back,

The right year as well, 2006 is the last year a petrol car will allowed become a classic under current legislation. I think one of the best investments to be made if you have a spare €100k lying around is to build a small shed/warehouse, fill it with x10 V12s and sit on them for 5-10 years. You'd surely double your money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,691 ✭✭✭✭Idbatterim

yeah, when I last saw a s600 w221 it was 20k, double cost of a S500. Whatever about the S500, the servicing etc and fuel on the 600 is depraved. The S500 is the one that makes by a mile the most sense in my opinion...

There's a fair few of us who eyeball V8 and V12 luxobarges continuously. We all agree that they are getting scarcer and scarcer. Which almost contradicts my other post a few posts back regarding how long certain models take to sell. The difference is the price. Trying to find poorly specced, let alone nicely specced V12s from the German brands for under £15k is getting harder and harder. V8s are a little easier to find, but also starting to disappear.

The main reasons I feel are due to much more efficient petrols with smaller displacement, electrification looming and yokes being exported. The days of picking up decent barges for peanuts are limited I feel. A well specced E38 750 with 50k miles will go for over £10k now, same goes for the 8 series except double to treble the price.

Those W221s will go up as the predecessor is no where near as sought after unless AMG. Great spec E65s are £7-8000 in the UK.

Granted nothing major will happen pricewise in the next 1-2 years, but I think there will be a dramatic shift towards electric beyond that which will make these cars far more collectable.

The proposed legislation infers no fossil fuel vehicle will be issued an NCT after 2045. As to whether FF cars after 2006 will be allowed become classics I don't know.

There's a fair few of us who eyeball V8 and V12 luxobarges continuously. We all agree that they are getting scarcer and scarcer.

They are getting hard to find and it helps to be a bit daft to buy these things. I spent 12 months looking for one and bought the W220 S280 in the interim as an apprenticeship car to be honest. I wanted to see what they were like to work on and its been and enjoyable experience.

While looking I toyed with the V8's and S55 versions as finding a nice 600 was not easy. However I made the decision that if I was going to buy one car as a long term keeper then it had to be V12 and it had be LWB and it had to be as loaded as I could find. I looked at a few in the UK but as luck would have it an Irish one turned up and a deal was done. My granny always said "whats for you won't pass you", so who am I to argue??

I have it about 5 weeks now and apart from running Star (fair few errors) on it and charging the battery I haven't done anything with her but I do have a list.

They are a special car, if you haven't heard one start its worth a listen, the starter sound is special until it catches. I have to smile when I put my hand on the engine cover while its running and there's no vibrations.

Then there's the torque of that engine - its immense. Flooring it at standstill is a waste of time unless you like buying new tyres or just sitting there making noise but when up and rolling and you squeeze the pedal (no need to floor it) it gathers pace at an astonishing rate and its all hushed with no fuss. Considering it weighs over 2000kg its a bit bonkers.

Here's a completely wreckless video on public roads and I think this one is running a DMS tune. Watch the tacho when the speedo tops out at 260kph. The car has other ideas, grabs 5th and goes for more.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXXzgTBJQSo

Equal length headers on 600 that sounds like an F1 car, doesn't work the same on the Biturbo engine though as the turbos muffle the scream.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSSfFLl3N2g

Back box removal is simple and sounds really nice
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEtzMsCO0rU

My plan is to keep it very long term and enjoy it. It will rotate with the Boxster on/off the road due to our stupid tax system. I plan to get it back to as close to how it left the factory but who knows. Maybe a 320CDi badge?
