Black barrel down to €30 in Tesco till March 17th. Other whiskeys discounted too but that's the best value of the bunch.

Had the Roe&Co (25eur) and the Black Barrell (30eur) in my hand today and went with the Black Barrell.

Didnt have any non-offensive whiskey to sip away on that isnt Redbreast etc and I hate drinking expensive whiskey when iv had a little too much booze if you get me. The Black Barrell will be a nice middle of the road dram im guessing. Havnt opened it or even tried it before.

They have Caskmates for €25, as well.

Sipper with lots of ice or base in short cocktails like a Manhattan - rather than a long drink like JD+Coke. At Taste of Dublin they were using it in a whiskey mojito!

At 46% it is supposed to come through better in cocktails according to their website.
    e.g.

Bought the Roe at Christmas when it was also going for 25 euro. Always drink my whiskey straight with a very small drop of water. Really liked it, for me it was like a Black Bush reserva.

So you don't drink it straight then.

I went to an industry night for Diageo and they served Roe&Co with coke. The first time I tasted it neat I thought the idea behind it was to be a replacement for JD.

I always drink my whiskey straight in a pint glass with a can of Red Bull

Amazing how much difference an omitted "or" can make:

There’s a point where I’d still consider a tiny drop of water to still be straight whiskey, talking 5ml not 50ml.

Obviously, I completely see the opposite view, that straight is nothing added. But at the same time, before bottling the last thing they did to that straight whiskey was to add water.

No need to state the obvious as if you're educating everyone Mellor as is your want, some of us mere mortals might surprise you with our experience.

I just gave my opinion, could care less what rules anyone else follows regarding straight whiskey and water. I've no idea what the salty attitude is about.

Picked up a bottle of Roe & Co last night. I really enjoyed it - very smooth, even though it's 45%. Tasted like a much more expensive whiskey. I'd consider it good value at it's usual price (c.€40), but at €25 in Tesco, it's a steal. I'd recommend it to anybody who hasn't tried it yet.

I really wanted to hate Roe & Co. Instead I found it a very accessible, entry-level whiskey that is good value for money (excellent if you can get it for €25).

My latest is the special edition Greenspot finished in Zinfadel casks from Napa Valley. As you would expect, spicy and sweet. Very enjoyable.

Anyone heard of Penderyn Madeira Welsh whiskey. Got a present of little bottles, was delicious to my totally uneducated palette.

I visited the distillery a few years ago and got a set of miniatures. That was my favourite of them. I've bought it a couple of times since.

Just had first taste of Tesco Finest 12 year old exclusive single malt ( with credit given to Brendan Coakley on the bottle ) It's €35 ( only went in for €25 Roe ....anyone tried caskstrength?) .Now it was competing for my whiskey€ on the Tesco whiskey shelf with €35 Teeling Small Batch , €30 Bush 10 / Hapenny and €25 Blackbush /Slane along with €20 Bush/Paddy .Ive tasted all bar the Hapenny .Its 'grand' but despite the PX finish (43% abv) it's no sherry bomb,my true love .Its got a hint of harsh woody finish but not as much as the last Bush 10 I had .Did I make the right choice ? Well it's as good as the devastatingly disappointing Super Valu exclusive Teeling SM that was €85 ! But I'm not blown away .Only other bottle on the go right now is Teeling ( standard - if you can use that term for a classic that includes five different finished SMs including 5% 2003 spirit!!!) SM .
It's not better than that but that was €50 ( often €55) .Overall thoughts .No Malt bite which even the Bush 10 has .But a classy enough tipple .More likely to appeal to the smooth/single grain fan maybe ( which I ain't ) Maybe I should have got the Blackbush or even the Bush ( although they tend to be inconsistent - sometimes world beating basic whiskey ,sometimes a bit too peaty / smokey for my liking ) .Sure buy a bottle yourself , it's worth trying once ( unlike -almost?-anything American /a fair bit of Scotch e.g. Teachers ,Queen Margot 3 in Lidl - the 5 is just drinkable and the 8 is grand -etc )
Probably won't buy another but no major regrets .So what's good at the price point ? OBriens doing some cheapish (35-49?) rare-ish whiskies lately eg Knapogues/Irishman/ Lambays ...what are you drinking ?( Man ,some sources say Teeling SM has up to 23 year old spirit in it !!!)

The weather took a turn this weekend. First time it felt "wintery". Cold, wets etc. Was a bit blocked up on the sofa and not enoying my wine last night and the misses suggested a hot whiskey. Been stuck on summer mode and it just hadn't occurred to me.
Made a completely bog standard toddy. Lemon, clove, brown sugar and Jameson. Sometime it's the simple things.

Wasn't a fan of Roe & Co first time round but am now, particularly at €25 a bottle which I managed to snag 2 of in my local Tesco the other day. Really smooth velvet and vanilla flavours for me . Much more to it than your average €20-€25 bottle of Paddy/Powers/Jameson/White Bush etc.

I also have a bottle of the cask strength which is reserved for special occasions. Very very nice. One to be savoured.

Having a drop of an 8 year old House of Lords that's been in the cabinet for a long while, a nice blend.

Well given the current crisis, I popped open the 2008 Midleton Very Rare - a nice wee drop indeed... Life is for living!

There'll be a lot of dust collectors cracked open in the next few weeks I'd say.

As it should be! I'm sure I'm not the only one who had a special bottle they've been keeping to mark tomorrow. Pity I have to be so greedy and won't be able to share. :pac:
