I think the 1.9 calculation is to focus everyone to what could happen, not what will. Once we start to limit movement, public engagement and continue preventative measures this too will pass. But there are many unknowns - how long will it take? How far will is spread? What happens when the hospitals can't cope?

I'm a feeling a lot more positive after hearing the Tainiste last night on TV - you can see he is prepared to take this seriously, that's all we can hope for. Ireland is a great country when we work together -

Yep the government have done everything right so far, the number of cases is low and barely growing, it's still looking pretty promising that it won't spread very much in Ireland.

I have back pain and usually get Panadol extra in my local pharmacy.

The pharmacist insisted on solpadeine. I didn't ask. Should have.

Are they conserving stocks of paracetamol?

You can get panadol in most supermarkets. I was in a chemist this morning and they were brimming with the stuff. Any reason you can't take aspirin? If the back pain is due to a pulled muscle, aspirin will likely be more effective as it reduces inflammation, which panadol doesn't.

Last night's interview with an Irish patient with the Corona virus, he said he feels fine and hasn't got a negative yet. It's scary to think that recovery is a few weeks even if you feel fine. How do they expect mild cases to recover? Nobody knows what kind of damage this will do in the long run to mild cases.

Yep, the graphs look the same for each country. And they all look the same as China at the start of the outbreak
... but we in ireland are different, thereare only 23 cases

The numbers look the same in the carefully selected countries that look like that. Look at the graph for Vietnam or Singapore or Taiwan, they look pretty similar to Ireland.

We cannot use Bologna as a template for anything. It's wise to adopt a 'wait and see' approach for the next week and watch closely how the virus is progressing across the EU. Given that our own numbers are low, we still have time on our side.

As far as I know, Bologna hasn't been included in the red zone.
The cities in the same region were, but not Bologna.

How many cases are there, then and what should the method be for counting? What official number would make you happy?

Health Minister says no cases, precautions and travel restrictions working, reports in Turkey that test kits not available for doctors.

When it hits the Turko-Syrian border and Idlib Province, aswell as the Rohingya camps in bangladesh and other Refugee camps worldwide, it will not be pretty.

If best western medicine is being overwhelmed at point of care, MSF and the Red Cross dealing with this in tents will be carnage :(

You absolutely KNOW that they would be still flying if they were getting enough passengers.

The routes must no longer be profitable.

Did they even disinfect the planes after the previous flights? Ask a stupid question.

It's hardly surprising they are at least thinking about it. It will happen, its just a case of when.

If all of you who are saying other people are overreacting are going to come here and ask for guidance on your travel plans, I suggest that you stop insulting people and making nothing of the issue.

    You're fierce funny though. [/sarcasm]

It was very premature to roll him out, clearly more downplaying. I'd be interested to hear about his condition next week.

Would there not be a time delay to be factored in yet though to allow for lockdown procedures that started only at the weekend? I know alot of people are criticizing how good this lockdown is. The new of new cases may yet drop in another week to 10 days still though.

The effects of the lockdown will only be seen in one to two weeks time, because of the length of the incubation period.

In the meantime the rates will be going up even faster than 1000/day.

Every one of the infected will infect 2 or 3 others (on average) unless they are in total isolation.

    A complete and utter sh*tstorm.

An outbreak starts with small numbers and works its way up, I thought this was generally accepted by now

Economics RN. That seems to have been the most of it. If foot and mouth had taken hold here game over for the non arable farming sector and huge economic fallout. Plus it didn't directly impact the suburban Irish very much at all. So no need to panic buy sacks of organic lentils and bogroll. Nor impacted the daily lives of the average office worker. It was someone else's problem for the majority here, as were most of the restrictions.

Plus any cows that got it would have been culled. Probably a bit extreme in this case...
Been serious, I had to cross the border twice a day during that time, it was a nuisance but no real hinderance. Nothing like the disruption we could possibly/likely have with this infection.

The Netherlands doesnt have that many cases. About 3 times more than Ireland, per capita. If youre afraid to go to Amsterdam at the mo for fear of catching the virus you should be afraid to go outside your door in Dublin as well, which you shouldnt be

New procedures in work, all non essential inter-department meetings/socialising banned any that have to go ahead must last less then ten mins and where possible keep more then a meter apart. Big changes to how we work.

Anyone else have company policies introduced?

No hand shakes. No business trips abroad. All non essential trips/supplier visits cancelled.

Self quarantine two weeks for those coming from red zones.

Couple of other minor changes, but they did take it seriously.
