There was panic buying in the supermarket I visited this morning. Trollies of water, toilet paper, and noodles.

Some people must think they’re preparing for snow and a drought.

That's strange because up until yesterday there was absolutely no rush at all in Dublin, i went shopping in Aldi, Lidl, Supevalue and Dunne's between Sun and Mon. All normal

Cancel in my opinion, if you got sick over there you'd be screwed unless you have very good health insurance.

Mate of my dad broke his leg on his last day of a holiday over there a few years ago. First hospital wouldn't deal with him because his insurance wasn't recognised, the second one demand a 5000 dollar up front payment as that was the deductible based on his insurance according to their accounting department.

She's probably got more of a chance of breaking her leg over there than catching coronavirus, so I presume by your logic nobody should travel to the US ever.

How are we all feeling about travel within Ireland? Other half and myself have a much needed break away coming up this weekend in Ireland for a special occasion, any recommendations for staying in hotels? I am planning to bring disinfectant, wipes and hand gel and hopefully stay away from crowds, just stick to the hotel bar etc.

Rent a house somewhere, hotels, apartment are bad, door handles shared air etc

Being in a hotel is like being on one of those cruise ships

Have flights to NYC booked for April. Today is the last day I can cancel my hotel for free, what would Boardsies do?
We're getting a really good deal and I know I won't find a better price but at the rate this virus is escalating I don't think I'll be going regardless. I don't know what to do.
If you're going to go make sure you are well insured.

    HUH ?

Today EU and EEA has approx 3,300 daily cases with a population of 519,192,829

At it’s peak China had almost 4,000 daily cases with a population of 1,437,358,888

That looks very worrying from my back of the fag packet calculations… China’s epidemic was mainly confined to one province and stopped by absolutely draconian containment.

Europe’s cases are all over the place (1/2 outside Italy) and increasing exponentially at present.

We are doing very little in comparison to what China did.

The EU figures will be far worse than China's

Germany has had 2 deaths and without any government lockdown or ban on outdoor events.

It's way too soon to be talking about shutting entire countries down (Italy is a different case obviously).

I'll predict right now that we'll see more road fatalities in Ireland in 2020 than we do deaths from Cornavirus.

Proportionate and measure response required, not hysterical overreaction driven by the social-media scare-merchants.
Well, that depends. Would you consider HK closing its schools for a month with 114 cases "hysterical overreaction driven by the social-media scare-merchants"?

Would you consider entire cities on lockdown "hysterical overreaction"?

give it a few more days. At the moment theres no community spread, so no need to overly worry. From the looks of it all cases around Munich are traceable to spins to Italy and those people and their families, and schools, are in home quarantine. They wont be on the p1ss in the pubs spreading the virus!

This weekend is 2 weeks since the end of the midterm break so any lingering cases among that surge of families coming back should be seen now in the next few days.

BTW, the parade is off (postponed actually) as well as the concerts afterwards, as it was banned by the city council as part of the moves against any event with over 1000 people attending.

Thank you for the detailed reply, I am concerned about travel also, there seems to be a reasonable to strong chance that travel will be heavily restricted and an advised/forced quarantine may be possible on my return - a few steins of beer aren't enough for me to risk isolation - possibly in another country.

I guess I will play it by ear up until departure time and make a call then.

Graces7 tipped into this at the weekend. For toilet paper, use cloths, soak in buckets and wash. To save toilet paper, the cloths can be used for wiping after pees.

Or just give your willy a good shake if you're a bloke

You'll be grand. I'd be concerned about travelling abroad and getting stuck, but not at home, and if you're careful about hand washing etc you probably have as much risk going to the shop if you're staying at home.

Heard someone in work saying that 1.9M would DEFINITELY be getting it in Ireland...
This is what happens when people get hysterical I guess.

The biggest take away from this, is that his most people have absolutely no grasp of numbers and statistics. Just in general, the nonsense out of people has been embarrassing.

Great thing about this thread is we can identify the hard chaws that will go against Government/CDC/WHO/Expert advice.

They are the kind that will break isolation & quarantine, go to the pub when told it's better not to and just generally act the bollocks because "It's no worse than a cold" "You're all crazy! You all want an apocalypse!" and "I am not changing my lifestyle for a couple of weeks."

The Italian population may accept the shutdown now but I guarantee the government would not have been able to enforce it 2 weeks ago. No EU country is a police state, draconian measures will require public buy in.

Part of the reason for that is the initial misleading information, like death rate 2% (lie!), it's only a flue (lie!) only old people with per-existing conditions have trouble (lie!)
People should have been given the full picture right away. There are still idiots around thinking this is nothing more than a flue
A little "healthy fear" would have helped

Two new cases Estonia, one after travelling from Italy and the other from France. That's the third international import of cases from France in the last few hours.Think won't be long til France is being locked down

No, it’s far better to shut countries down earlier, more chance of success with less carnage. Waiting as long as Italy did is not a good idea.

We already had it booked before this kicked off but I reckon with Paddy's Day curtailed, there will be some good offers if you look online or ring a hotel directly. Hope you get to enjoy it!

I am haunted by the words of that overworked exhausted critical care surgeon in Northern Italy...

when I see the crowds of Irish people descending on Cheltenham and very unlikely to self isolate when they return.

"Try to have mercy on that myriad of older people you could exterminate."

Thanks, I was thinking that also. It's prepaid so would be a shame to lose out when it's within Ireland. I'll be extra careful and clean down everything when we arrive.

I'd cancel. If you decide later that you do want to travel, there will be plenty of cancelled rooms available at good prices.

    No two countries are alike.

Ireland is not Bologna or Wuhan - there can be all sorts of environmental reasons why a virus might transmit quickly in one region but not in another.

I hate to break it to you, but long before this virus quite the number of dying people in hospitals ended up dying alone, mostly out of practicalities or just pure dumb luck, like passing away in the middle of the night, or when relatives weren't visiting.

Except that up to that point they might have had someone beside them, a chance of someone visiting them during the previous day. This virus means that people affected are completely alone (except for the ICU staff, and even that's limited) for days on end. Can you imagine the dread and the loneliness and the despair?

Somebody in work quite a few days ago! Shows what the mind can do..... Are there any stats yet I wonder on how how this illness is affecting smokers/non-smokers. Can't be good if you are on 40 a day.
The sooner some sort of UBI is rolled out, then the less of these type of walk-outs there will be. Companies should offer no risk temporary leave, upto 3mths if desired.

Regular smokers will have it bad, very bad.
Never been a better time to give it up.

Not only have they a higher risk of viral uptake, but reduced immune systems. A glance at China shows the older males had a disparity level of end cases.

Even 8hrs away from smoking and carbon monoxide levels return to nornal, days and weeks can see significant cell health improvements.
It's also a high frequency hand to face action, which is the last thing to be doing.

That's all true, Italy is paying a high price due to people like that
The Italian press has finally started to report on 18 yo people dying in hospital only today after the controversy over idiots not giving a f*ck and still going out every night
