I was in town last Saturday and Cafe en Seine was completely overtaken by Italians. My friend and I were sitting down and an Italian guy came up and sat right next to her, telling her how beautiful she was etc. She lied and told him that she had a boyfriend, hoping he’d get up and leave, but he didn’t. We then got up and left ourselves. Spent the entire night worrying and am still worried now given how close we were.

I now have a bit of the sniffles and am hyper paranoid. Not sure if this is due to media scaremongering or if I should genuinely be worried.

Does anyone else feel like this lately?

I’ve decided I won’t be going out in Dublin City again until this all dies down.

It was said a couple of times that flu was more transmissible than covid 19. Thought it was the other way round?

soap disolves the fat in the virus...

honestly haven't heard that from anywhere before

It's been all over the place, it's the explanation as to why it's so effective.

LOL there’s no way we will have 10,000 cases by week 10. Not a chance. We are having a very slow spread since last Thursday. If we reach 1,000 cases by week 10 I’ll be surprised.

To the media and panic merchants throughout social media about to bring the financial world to its knees and spark global recession - FUKCING RELAX!!

I think it’s too late. All the markets have tanked.
To the posters complaint about the health service in this country wait until you see it in 6 months.

According to Worldometers, Italy rate was much worse:
    https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/italy/

Italy was 21 cases on Feb 21st.

It's been in the UK since end of January. The numbers are not doubling every week.

Something that is getting overlooked is that Italy may have had hundreds of cases on Feb 21st.

The massive acceleration in case numbers might be an illusion.

    It depends on testing

I hear you but from the look on his face I think the facts hit them hard enough that political considerations aren’t to the foremost. A government of national unity for the next little while would be a good solution. No-ones manifesto is going to be enacted for the next six months.

Agree on a unity Govt. It was discouraging to see Leo state in the Sindo that a unity Govt with SF would harm the Covid 19 response. Very immature comment in these times.

Time to put party alliances to the side for the good of the country and work together.

Simon Coveney should be installed Taoiseach.

    Good night.

The sniffles and sneezing isn’t the main symptom of Covid-19.
    Dry cough and fever.

Unless they coughed in your face it's very unlikely you contracted anything from them.

The virus expert was trying to point this out on CB but the alarmists were having none of it.

I'm pretty sure he said he was extremely sceptical that 50% of the population could get the virus given that it is difficult to transmit.

Italy is currently has the highest infection rate. It's 0.015%, 2.5% is a long way away from there

It's reassuring to hear that it's currently a low percentage. But if the model of 40% infection rate were to take place here (I heard Dr. Sam McConkey suggesting a worst case scenario of 80%), what is the max % of people infected at any one time likely to be? It would be tons more than 0.015%, that's for sure.

If 40% became infected over a year, that would be >0.75% infected per week if it were completely flat, which it won't be. There would be considerable spikes. Plus that's 0.75% per week. On the point of ICU beds, people need to be in ICU for a several weeks so there would be a pile-up of demand for ICU beds that we wouldn't remotely have.

Is 2.5% infected at one time actually unrealistic? I'd like it to be because otherwise the vast, vast majority of critically ill patients will go without proper treatment. Even bringing it down to 0.5% of the population being sick at the one time is still very, very nasty.

Eating bats in Thailand is illegal and extremely rare.

Bats are a food source for humans in some areas. Bats are consumed in various amounts in some regions within some European, North American, African, Asian, and Pacific Rim countries and cultures, including Vietnam, Seychelles, Indonesia, Palau, Thailand, China,[1] and Guam.[2][3] In Guam, Mariana fruit bats (Pteropus mariannus) are considered a delicacy.[4][5]

I'm going to try practice social distancing, only go places when necessary no browsing shops, cafe, pub ect.
Would be great if we had leadership that could motivate people to take steps to keep numbers of people with virus down.

Look at the country graphs at the top of this page.... every one has the same shape... all that differs is the starting point for each country.

We will follow the same trajectory unless we can limit the spread of the virus.

They are no strangers to pandemics themselves, having caused the mass killings of many.

    It depends on testing

Italy might be a bogus example and comparison. It's very possible many hundreds of people already had the virus in mid Feb (which in turn would suggest the alarming spike in case numbers never actually happened).

Sure, but look at the countries that have timeline data: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries

You'll see many of the countries that are now over 1000 cases had ~25 cases fairly recently.

Spain had 25 cases on February 27th, less than 2 weeks ago, they now have had more than 1k cases and 30 deaths.

The vibe of this show is disgraceful. I'd say any OAP watching it is absolutely freaked.

Telling people that 50-60% of the population will have the virus soon is outrageous stuff. It can do no good.

Presume you still believe (as per last week I think) everything should carry on as normal in Ireland, there is no problem at all & the real danger here is the public panic & the economic damage from that?

To put a rhetorical question, if you believe it is all absolute crazy-talk/scaremongering nonsense, why are they doing it?

IMO as well as medical advice they must be getting they are seeing same news/events as you & I, what Italy has been dealing with, what is shaping up elsewhere in Europe.

They are not god like figures who know what the right level of response is to this + calibrate the public message perfectly.

Surely we realise that about our politicians, lord knows we give them all enough stick for the many mistakes they make.

Was not listening to it myself but read some reactions here. I think they are likely putting grim worst case scenarios to the people to try to get them ready to accept unpalatable measures that might be necessary on the advice of public health experts in the future days & weeks.

Already had one such measure I suppose with cancellation of some of the St. Patrick's day events in Dublin.

wtf vicky phelan? why is she on?

random non-experts this is why i don't usually watch the CB show
She is on because she has a compromised immune system and she can talk about self-isolation.

Terrible mix messages in the past 3 days from our state broadcaster. On the late late show the other night some Muppet was saying to get on with our lives and go out and socialise and not to worry.

Now were told we are screwed if we dont act dramatically.

The cynic in me thinks its because France and Germany have stepped up measures, like banning large public events.
If other EU states banned flights from Italy then our lot will suddenly decide to do the same.
