I hate the Chinese government but there is zero evidence this came from some idiot eating a bat.

So it's really Ozzy Osbourne's fault!

I think I read somewhere that it's because of a large number of male smokers in China as to why the rates were skewed. Not sure if it's true though.

Yeah that's part of the reason I'm asking. Curious if we're seeing a similar trend elsewhere or if it was indeed due to the likes of that.

Anyone thought about the implications for the EU. Along with Brexit could economic collapse in Italy, perhaps Spain and other countries, along with political turmoil bring the EU down?

    On our national day?
I find the love for America from Irish strange at times.

how big are the patricks day parades in new york, boston, chicago... it is an irish american thing as much as an irish thing.
Simply no comparison to any other countrys national day.

This might be the year there are more patricks day parades outside ireland than in ireland.

I would follow UK and take it from there.
the are doing lots of tests: nearly 25000
they have not closed their borders and are asking those with cold and/or flu to isolate

I had to go out earlier so I'm only catching up now. I see this on the RTE website "live" page:

On concerns that there are still flights coming into Dublin from areas under lockdown in northern Italy, Dr Holohan said the number coming in on those flights was likely to be very low.

He said they were now looking to other parts of Europe and not just northern Italy in terms of flights.

Anyone catch the full details of what he said there? Is it possible that Ireland might actually ban flights?

But then, do the NI executive have authority to do the same? Because if there wasn't also a ban in the north then a determined person, like yer man that's gone AWOL in India, would still get in.

    How's our UK neighbour doing?

Not so bad far as I can see. But maybe like ourselves the worst hasn't hit yet.

We are furthest West, so I would follow UK and take it from there. They had zero, then two or three, and now many cases too.

I expect us to follow their pattern with respect to both case numbers and state response.

    I would imagine coordination happening.

    On Nickelodeon was it?

No the poster perfectly correct, for a lot of people this will be a minor illness. Why the sarcasm.?

Schools in north Dublin informing students to take home books day by day this week. They’re also setting up online learning on office 365 so students can’t communicate with teachers should schools close. Do schools know more info than we know?

"Schools", "school", or some clown on WhatsApp? Plus think of the logistics involved in that.

Is it still the case that more men than women are becoming seriously ill with this? I know that was the case in China but are we seeing similar in Italy? I think we may have slightly more female cases here in Ireland but obviously that sample size is far, far too small to draw conclusions from.

Why would men be more likely to be ill with the virus than women are?

It that not the general consensus, for the vast majority this will be a minor illness. That's not taking away from the dreadful impact it will have on some patients.

Yes, the concern over this outbreak is not for the relatively young and healthy people. It is over the infectiousness and risk it poses to vulnerable people.

If you were to look at this from a very cold, detached and cynical perspective, it could all be a bit of a boon as so many elderly and already sick people might be killed off that the pensions burden would be significantly reduced and hospital places would open up again.

But to look at it from a normal human perspective, you could be looking at a whole lot of personal tragedy.

Has Italy published any stats on age, health etc of those who have unfortunately died from the virus?

Can the government wheel out someone who has recovered and get them to tell the people how it was for them and how they feel now?

Nobody in Ireland has recovered yet.

Maybe more men smoke and suffer with chronic lung disease ?

In fairness our infections per million are very similar to the U.K. (4.8 per million). The numbers appear to be right.

Is there any website where you can click on a country and see their number of infections for each day?

I never thought I’d say this, but I feel an excel spreadsheet coming on.

That's what I was thinking as well. Culturally similar, and they are further along than us. I imagine Ireland will follow a similar pattern. Obviously that is based on my vast knowledge of epidemiology.
