As for high numbers, it could be: higher density; cultural behaviours (greeting by shaking hands and/or kissing).

As for where the virus came from.

Italy did not get it directly from Wuhan (while the US did, in mid January).

I started the day defending the sunday business post against allegations of scaremongering re 1.9 million cases here.

Now the Taoiseach is saying we could easily have 50-60% of the population infected.

Things are escalating quickly.

This is entirely true, if you catch a severe case then they need to either provide assisted breathing and/or re-oxygenation of the blood stream, both of which require specialised equipment, if we reach a point where those limited capacities are broached, then a choice needs to be made on grounds of age, likelyhood of survival etc. to deem who should get the priority care.

Three new cases is actually very encouraging. There is no sign at all that the virus has accelerated in the last seven days.

Contacted the HSE, Ryanair, my companies HR dept, see if my mother-in-law will come Wednesday or not.

HSE - no action if no symptoms. Not stopping anyone coming into the country etc etc, already knew this.
Ryanair not cancelling her flight
HR tells me to contact them again on Weds, notify manager, self-isolate for 2 weeks....

So she arrives, has the time of her life with my high-risk wife and my daughter, while I'm supposed to self-isolate for 2 weeks.

Same as the uk, they are hoping it'll 'only' be 50%, that's their target now, instead of 60-80%, using phased staging.

There, in 10days (Phase2 start) anyone with even a cold or sniffle will be told to get off the streets and self-isolate for 10days. If they don't comply, may be legally removed and quarantined.

Great question there, why are there reports of a hospital in Kildare burning all the objects that may have come into contact with the patient who was confirmed.

Terrible answer about infection prevention and control measures being up on the HSE website, not referencing the question actually asked at all.

Tony just had a very human moment there when he almost broke down when a journalist asked them if they were wrecked from it. I don't know how a person can feel sorry for themselves when they're doggedly controling the narrative to the extent he is doing.

Granted, this is a far more serious situation than swine flu and preventative measures will need to be taken, likely people working from home for a month or more. But mass layoffs? I'm not sure I see it.

People are pointing to the markets crashing as evidence of an oncoming crisis, but the prices in these markets are set by investors, humans. Humans can be irrational by nature and these prices (I suspect) are not being set by rational investors, these are people in a panic.

A lot of the posters here - as well as many in the medical and government departments - would suggest that we are definitely taking this seriously, and are certainly not gullible. On the face of it, the rise in cases over the last few days has been very positive.

I wonder, though, how do we compare in terms of trajectory with regards to when other countries first reported cases? Did they see a similar 'low' rise in cases, only for it to explode at a particular point, or are we bucking the trend? It may have been asked here before, but the thread moves so fast it's difficult to keep up.

All of that is one big IF. I find it interesting to see how they are feeding information to the public and laying the groundwork for the possible escalation of phases to come.

In Ireland anyway at the moment. Accelerating elsewhere like Italy, Spain, Germany and France.

I would be worried though of people who may have it unknown to themselves. There were flights coming in from the hotspot everyday. They came through our airports and into our communities.

Confirmed cases go up when testing increases.

Probably the more informative stat would be how do our test numbers compare with other countries at similar points in time.
