guardian report which illustrates how this can have less obvious fatal effects.

One of the reasons why a total immediate lockdown could easily kill more people than the current proportionate evidence-based approach to tackling it.

and the keyboard at the PC, and the mouse, the toilet handle, light switches, kettle handle, fridge door handle, buy new toothbrushes and keep them seperate and not all in the same glass at the sink. etc

Personally I don't see the need to wipe anything in the house other than going back and wiping the door handle. The light switch if you have touched it before washing your hands. So, wash hands -> door handle -> hands again, done. The other items you mentioned won't be getting virus on them if you washed your hands properly on coming in.

IYou probably should be off finding some sand to stick your head in.

Maybe you should find an echo-chamber so you don't compromise your safe-space by having to read an opinion that doesn't tie in with yours.

Yes , the public health spend in this country is average.
The out of pocket ( read: for profit ) is out of control at 7 billion.

What we pay for health in this is way above average. Many people have no choice but to pay for GP services as their already high tax spend on health does not cover GPs.

And most people would not pay their private health insurance if the public health service was reasonably accessible. Don't forget that the majority of these people will already have paid taxes towards the poorly functioning health services, so they are paying on the double. Plenty of retired people are prepared to give up most other discretionary spending just to cling on to their health insurance.

Is that almost. 56% recovery rate or potentially 44% death rate?

It's really disappointing to reflect on what a failure "containment" has been. What containment measures did most European countries even take?
I think for a long time we will be looking back on this epidemic and wondering what could have been done to prevent getting to this stage.

At least we have learned one thing, if the zombie apocalypse ever comes we're fecked!

Is he promoting this thing or what's the story!

Why did he and others not demand that all flights from North Italy (bar essential) be cancelled last week ?
Would have been much more prudent, than preaching armageddon after.

He certainly seems to be enjoying his 15 minutes of fame.

I see he's up to 120k dead today. Yesterday his upper limit was 100k. Edit: He actually said 120k as upper limit yesterday.

We should do a pool. I reckon he'll say 1m dead on Tuesday week.

Checking Milan to Dublin flights last week, it seemed Ryanair had one flight a day from Milan to Dublin. Now it seems they have 2 flights a day.

Are they actually laying on extra flights to cater for demand?

Looking at the prices of tickets also, it seems demand is high.

What the hell is going on? Where is our government to step in?

Off you toddle to Northern Italy then and report back what life is like there. It's a glimpse into what things could be like here in two weeks. I'll pay for your ticket, one way of course.

Anyone know what time Ireland will get an update on confirmed figured etc

    UK figures @2pm daily.
    Ireland 7pm evening.

    Currently, UK = 278
    Ireland = 21 cases...

Better to keep the parade which is in the open air and close the pubs, or at least require them to keep people a metre apart and close at 6pm as they do in Italy.

Good point -but the chances of that happening would be minus pi times the square root of any imaginary number you care to mention.

Is that guy from the RCSI? He has also expressed how important it is to maintain the economy of a country, since economic hardships can also impact health.
Has he rowed back on the importance of keeping normal life going as much as possible.

South Korea are the one country giving me hope that this might not be as bad as the projections. China not so much due to the unreliability of their government and their unique, unreplicable response to the outbreak.

The thing is South Korea got stuck in very early, Europe has sat on its hands for four weeks, it is unknown if we can pull it back from this point. Also, we have to content with Italy which is going to be like an open wound constantly spreading the virus to other regions, which will undermine any effort we might make.

Anyone else lying in bed thinking of excuses for not going to work and not brave enough to say it's because you fear getting the virus or passing it on to others

Called into a pub in town for a couple of pints before going on campus.

You can't compare South Korea with Europe/West because everyone in South Korea wears a face mask..meanwhile the western governments are telling us to not wear masks

I'd imagine Northern Italy is like hell on earth right now, everyone sick around you, elderly dying all round, no bars, gyms, shops etc open. I'd say any Italian that can is getting the fook outa dodge, nice 2 week break in Dublin while the worst blows over. Banning just italian flights isn't the answer though, those desperate enough to get out would just travel further afield into Germany, france etc. to fly. I think the horse has well and truly bolted on this one we have possibly hundreds of undiagnosed cases walking around infecting before and behind them

If most mild cases pass and are never tested because they are only mild and of the more serious cases which are tested 15% require hospital treatment doesn't that mean the overall risk of needing hospital treatment is greatly reduced like the korea numbers are portraying or am I crazy.
