There are a number of drugs on trial at the moment, but I reckon this will burn itself out before that point. Problem is, a lot of older and vulnerable people are going to die.

I reckon after this though, there are going to major societetal changes. Less travel, more insular. Harder to go into different countries. Might actually save the planet in a roundabout way.

But there's barely less travel right now? I reckon absolutely nothing is going to change. The wet markets will be back by next year.

Prob old news but the guy from CUH is in the mater now.
Supposedly it’s very, very unlikely to be a positive ending

Why was he transferred? Hopefully he will pull through... but given the volume of potential cases... would it be unusual for him to be moved?

Is the Mater operating as normal or has it been/is it being turned into some sort of centre of excellence?

Yeah and what a way to die without relatives to try and give some comfort. Folks need to stop the ****ed up ‘im alright jack’ type comments because they know they aren’t in the most vulnerable group.

There will be so much change that we've never seen before in our country that will shock and rock many people and families and communities. If the hospitals are at full capacity and you have a family member struggling with difficulties, you're talking about watching someone die at home.

How would you deal with this then? How would you deal with cancelling annual leave? Do you carry it over to the next financial year? Do you just pay staff instead (needing an increase in the income tax)?

I think I might offer a 50% carry-over in subsequent years and pay the other 50% as overtime. Many ways to juggle it.

Don't think my father got AL during WW2 and he certainly didn't get paid what the HSE dole out.

I feared the worst this morning , but after a day spent outside engaging in real world, wonder why we are being bombarded with the bad new headlines - What about the good news -

The figures from China are very good, I'm sure most people were expecting more Irish infections today -

The sensationilist bad news will just fuel fear and and axiety , and cause panic and hardship for those that need essentials most - be it medical assistance / masks / toilet paper etc..

But the HSE didnt announce this so it must be lies..

Well there seems to have been a massive delay with one of the latest to be diagnosed down in Bon Secours, Dazzler, so much so that he was sitting in ICU for a period of time before being tested for coronavirus.

They have advised staff who have had contact with the patient and who are displaying symptoms of coronavirus to self isolate.

Except there are not always symptoms!!!! Shít you couldn't make up. The HSE will not be happy until we have achieved the Italians scale of ineptitude. All flights need to be stopped now from Northern Italy.

133 to 366 deaths in one day. Now approaching 8k cases.

Maps with current cases in Italy:

    Isolation room there maybe.
My wife and I were put in isolation in Limerick maternity hospital when she had the flu.

Do you really believe some of these places are giving accurate figures? Are you saying you trust the current Filipino government?
So what makes you doubt the figures from the Philippines or Hong Kong, then?

The GP is not open tonight. The out of hours clinic closed at 6, It seems there is no other help number until morning. He is a student and what if tomorrow is too late to contact school.

I have been listening to news items all week with various politicians and medical experts telling everyone what they should be doing but I'm stuck here with no number to call apart from 999.

If you have health insurance they usually have a nurse line you can call for advice.

The French notoriously suffer from a weak immune system due to their fatty diets.

Link? Sounds like pure nonsense. They have better longevity than Ireland and are 14th overall, which is very good. http://worldpopulationreview.com/countries/life-expectancy-by-country/

It’s the national centre for infectious diseases & only place with ecmo machines - transferee cos he needed one of these.

Can folks stop arguing over whether or not 1 or 2 cases are confirmed or are rumours, it really does not matter one bit.

The future epicurve will be: hundreds, then thousands, 10's of thousands, before peaking at hundreds of thousands of cases.

Just read this from my reddit feed. I strongly recommend you avoid if you are easily upset. It’s a very stark description of medicine in Italy right now

    That was powerful thank you.

Are we going ro be able to transfer every patient to Dublin when this kicks off properly.

Chickens coming home to rooste because of severely underfunded health service .

I wasnt overly unnerved by this a week ago but it certainly has my attention now

The death rate of 4.9% in Italy is chilling.

How many people have been tested here?

This is it precisely. How many cases were then in Wuhan and N Italy in the first week? How many are there now? And posters here are worrying about the tax implications of deferred holiday pay... bigger picture, please.

Hundreds of thousands of cases here?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,831 ✭✭✭✭Water John

No health service in any country would be geared up to deal with an epidemic. There would be national plans to deal with major health events.

    The first bit is sensible.

The second bit is hopelessly optimistic. The HSE said it's definitely going to be at least 1,900,000. ;)

For those trying to scare people by saying that they know of other cases, remember we are still in flu season and plenty of "normal" winter flu cases about

    Might reach millions.

I can say with absolute certainty that the total number of infected here will be between tens and millions.
