If 20% of Chinese get infected, and 2% of that number die, that will be 277 million and 5.5 million. The number of new deaths today, would make that unlikely.

They have locked down the area where this started and isolated the population forcebly in their homes to stop it spreading. We will not or cannot do the same.

I see some countries with no cases, and some with one case.

the wealthier the country with the more travelled citizens the more the cases

In Cork there are three Covid19 cases. All three are not related to travel to highly infected areas. Two cases are hospital patients and one is a healthcare employee who was in contact with the CUH patient. No one knows how these two hospital patients got the virus. It's obvious that there are infected people without serious symtoms.
We need to follow the good hygene standards that HSE has promoted through the media.

It has peaked in Eire. The doom mongers may as well get a new hobby next week.

Bulgaria is doing pretty good as well, very few cases.

On the other hand they have announced an unprecedented national flu epidemic which required to close all schools in the country, cancel public events, university lectures and so on: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-bulgaria-health-flu-idUSKBN20S250

All completely unrelated to Coronavirus though :-)

You couldn’t make up this stuff!

If what some of the posters here say is correct: if Germany had taken it more seriously to begin with, Italy wouldn't have got the outbreak which has currently claimed 366 lives.

Germany basically dictates EU policy. With the EU not taking this seriously all Irish efforts are probably eventually doomed.
    EU restricting free movement? Never.

    Peaking? Wasn't that in China?

China has started declining as well as South Korea. That could be a result (in the case of PRC) of the draconian autocratic measures put in place or the virus may have mutated in a way to adapt to it's host by not causing serious harm or else they have decided to under-report. You never know with them.
Even Iran seems to be seeing an improvement as they had close to 1500 cases yesterday and 740 today

After a few weeks of it not being recognised. Every other country can deal with it in a different way, with the knowledge acquired from the Chinese experience.

That was a play on words... Peaking... Parking?

    Edit: Parking! Ffs Peking!

This actually makes me more concerned if anything.

If there really are only 21 cases here - great! Terrific! A minor miracle seeing that there was a community related infection, the origin of which is unknown, and the infected individual was in close contact with hundreds of people for a full week.

One hopes for the best, but knowledge is key.

In my view, we are far from peaking. That will happen in 1-2 weeks

A consistent 10% of all cases in Italy requiring ICU for the last 3 weeks is pretty horrific. No wonder the heath system can't cope.

Well they probably won’t get a new hobby but they should. This is done and dusted. No one can argue with the Eire numbers.

this virus is pretty much endemic to the human population now

They only have 11 cases ( all in one region which is under lockdown).

the china story is really quite remarkable. almost no new cases outside of hubei through the entire country of population 1.3 billion.

i don't believe they imposed the ultra harsh quarantine procedures everywhere in the country did they?

so either the figures are complete rubbish, or this is a virus that explodes over a few weeks and burns itself out somehow.

    hoping it's the latter.

Ireland currently has the same number of cases per capita as the UK, 4 per million population

    There you go.

The 'why are you being hysterical' poster becomes the complete defeatist.

In the same way that Macron has just rolled over and said 'it cannot be contained'.

The so-called scaremongers actually want to do something about this, but there are so many people who are just completely fatalistic. I just don't get this.

I don't know I still think we'll see a spike in numbers here at some point, it might not be massive but it seems inevitable
