Most countries seem to report early in the day but we tend to find out around 8.30pm..wonder is there a reason for this. We'll be more relaxed at the end of the day?!

No it's because big business told Leo to do that so workers won't be slacking off mid afternoon checking the news.

Or all these HSE pen pushers do it late just so they can claim more overtime on the gravy train.

It actually is a really useful service. My uncle's funeral was in a church where they stream the church services and it was great for people who couldn't make it to the funeral whether because they were too sick or were on the other side of the planet.

Oh I agree, the service is great, I've used it before too, I wasn't knocking it, it's the headline that grabbed me.

According to this article 249 in 2018 and 255 now

    https://www.rte.ie/news/health/2020/0211/1114690-icu-beds/

The number of ICU beds available is totally dependent on having sufficient specialist nurses and medical staff to attend to them.

These specialists do not drop out of the sky at the drop of a hat.

Unlike the 'normal' ICU beds, the beds must be in an isolation unit because this is a very infectious disease. One of the reasons the Chinese built a hospital in 2 weeks.

If any of the specialist nursing and medical staff must self isolate... the problem is compounded.

    Difficult times ahead.

Might not be much fun, places closed, empty or near empty.
You're gonna have to wait a year for a vaccine.

The cases are going to up eventually, might be none today or the next day but as time goes on it's inevitable we are going to get what the rest are experiencing.

25 of those cases in the UK were in London. Hopefully all with travel history otherwise....

*edit* 8 of them have no travel history. Person to person spread.

Note the amount of doctors and nurses getting it worldwide. Existing beds in system minus beds taken out because you don't have enough staff is no fun.

If percentage wise we surpass the UK it would be a poor show.

Ok the UK are 113/67 million i.e. 0.0000016% confirmed infected

Republic of Ireland: 6/4.9 million 0.0000012% confirmed infected

Nothing in it BUT our numbers for today are not confirmed whereas the UK's are.

I don't understand how people are saying that normal flu is worse. There's a vaccine for that. I only ever got the flu once and that was 8-9 years ago. I'm pretty sure I'm not going to come down with it again anytime soon, I do have a healthy enough immune system. I read something that 70% of the world's population will have this Corona virus. That is quite alot and almost guaranteed to catch it at some point unless I become a hermit.

Take this with an absolute pinch of salt, I've no proof just word from someone who works there but there seems to be a case in CUH Cork. Again not trying to scaremonger or worry people I'm just posting what I've heard and I've no basis to it other than being told by someone working there.

You have some people who just like to spread rumors, gossip and/or exaggerate some story for the craic. You just have your own discretion whether that's the case or if this was genuine.

If I was that person I wouldn't state it unless it's confirmed. That said, if I see anyone not washing their hands after using a public toilet I'll politely remind them...guaranteed that I'll end up offending someone.

    Poster probably read this

    https://thehill.com/changing-america/well-being/prevention-cures/482794-officials-say-the-cdc-is-preparing-for
Harvard epidemiologist Marc Lipsitch told The Wall Street Journal that "it's likely we'll see a global pandemic" of coronavirus, with 40 to 70 percent of the world's population likely to be infected this year.
Ira Longini, a biostatistician and adviser to the World Health Organization (WHO), has predicted that two-thirds of the global population may eventually contract COVID-19.

Prof Gabriel Leung, the chair of public health medicine at Hong Kong University, says if the transmission estimate of 2.5 additional people for each infected rate is accurate, that would result in an "attack rate" that would affect 60 to 80 percent of the world's population.

I believe that was the WHO's absolute worst case scenario; basically if no country did anything at all to stop it (like for instance; if china didn't lock down Wuhan)

Worry is completely useless though. Hand wringing and freaking out. What's the point?

My mother was worried about me going to San francisco decades ago because I would die of AIDS by using a toilet someone else would use.

It was considered the MOST pressing issue of the late 80's.

Seems a reasonable possibility, 40 to 70 pc, but may take a year or two.
