Ive seen a nice bit of here say on facebook saying that but its only speculation.

Are you in Switzerland? Which canton?

I see British Airways have made the inane move of refusing to refund flights from the UK to Italy, but offering Zurich and Geneva as alternative destinations. So now people are using those airports to get to and from Italy.

Why are they allowed to get away with this? BA's greed is causing people who may have otherwise just cancelled to travel, and to spread the virus in Switzerland AND the UK.

74 yr old woman with a chronic illness died in Lausanne University Hospital (Canton is Vaud).
My niece, husband, and their young son live there. He's a policeman.
Have another niece in Valais, and one in Basel.
They have been told in no uncertain terms to stay where they are and don't be getting any ideas about Paddy's Day.

In fairness it looks like the family in question must have traveled to North Italy days before it became a known hotspot and flew back when the virus was only just taking off there.

Is it correct he kept working and the kids went back to school, can understand how it could be mistaken for a cold/flu so wouldn't blame them in anyway. It would be good for the HSE to be up front without naming names.

I am surprised Cheltenham is still going ahead in the UK given the surge in cases and with it spreading in the community , I'd be surprised if they dont have 500 cases by Tuesday at least

Woman in Belfast was confirmed on Thursday 27th Feb.

    As per BBC

    Wed 26
    Thur 27 - she’s confirmed
    Fri 28
    Sat 29
    Sun 1
    Mon 2
    Tue 3
Wed 4 - cases in Clare confirmed

If we take it she arrived on Wed 26 Feb then that’s 8 days till Clare cases confirmed. If the Clare family were in the 2 rows beside rule, they would have been self isolating. If they were carrying on their lives as normal (why else would school be closed?) that throws that 2 rows idea out the window.

I think she arrived back in Dublin on the 19th.

Jesus, expert on Newstalk not advising on Paddys Day one way or the other because we would lose our culture.

Come on, "lose" our culture over 1 lousy day that can be rescheduled?

Culture? You mean the annual drink for the entire day but pause momentarily in the middle of the day to watch a few tractors and bands pass by on the street? It would be no harm if we lost that 'culture'

BTW he wasn't an expert, he was a Grade A wanker.

I'm not hearing it from the media, had dinner in Joe's on Tuesday and I'd say they all thought I had it with all the sneezing I was doing, was also in Aldi at lunch time queing with all the secondary school kids.
HSE need to be upfront and stop this east/west crack.

The HSE and our Government have their heads in the sand with this virus. They DONT want to make the tough decisions that need to be made. To put some perspective on this.

The UK have a population of circa 67 million, they only have 90 confirmed cases of Covid 19. They have already admitted defeat in the containment phase and have said they have moved to the delay phase and are clamping down on all major public events etc. British Airways have stopped flying into many of the affected areas. Community spread has already started.

Ireland on the other hand only has a population of 4.8 million and we have 6 confirmed cases. We still think we can contain this virus... and refuse to make the big decisions like stopping all flights to and from Italy and as of right now we are going ahead with the Paddys day parade... Are we complete morans? Its embarrassing how this country reacts. Ryanair are sending out e-mails this morning offering cheap flights... I received one myself. That is a disgraceful lack of respect or care for the current situation.

The HSE are still playing charades refusing to give out information on the current cases. No one is going to attack the patients but it would be massively beneficial if we knew where the areas were so that people in those areas can be more vigilant. I have been banging on about this for days now, the HSE are off their faces if they think that we can contain this and that we only have 6 cases. We have many times that already in the country.

By cancelling flights to affected areas and stopping mass gatherings like paddys day will GREATLY increase Ireland's chance at slowing this virus down which will give our hospitals time to treat and discharge the patients currently suffering from the seasonal influenza outbreak.

We need to do everything possible to slow this down, containment is not possible.

The HSE haven't even explained how this virus transmits and that the greatest risk is the pre-symptomatic spread. There should be a section on the news EVERYDAY hammering home the major points. This is not scare mongering, it is just common sense. Knowledge is power. If we empower the population with the facts about the virus and how everyone can help slow it down, then we would be in a much better place.

Right now our government and HSE are running around like headless chickens afraid of whats coming because they wont implement what is right for OUR country now. It will take deaths for them to change and by that time it will be far to late.

It's odd how we describe ourselves as in the "containment" phase but take such passive measures towards actual containment.

I agree the St.Patricks day festival should be cancelled this year, but apart from that The Irish authorities (HSE, govt. etc) are pretty much doing what every other country in the world are doing. What would people like us to do different? We have been the only country to cancel a 6 nations rugby match.
It is far too early for large scale school closures the disruption would be massive.

Flybe has collapsed with the loss of hundreds of jobs. That is not an insignificant thing for the people involved. Economies need to function, that's not just about money it is about welfare and health also.

As the first known death in Europe was in Valencia on 13 February.
FYI France has nearly 300 cases already - their major cluster is in Creil which is a commuter town connected to Paris by train to Gare du Nord station - same station where international high speed trains depart for Amsterdam and Eurostar to London.

The church built on the Bethlehem site revered as the birthplace of Jesus is to close after a suspected outbreak of the coronavirus, a church official said today.

The Palestinian health ministry called for local churches, mosques and other institutions to close after a number of suspected cases at a hotel in the Holy Land city of Bethlehem.

    ****s getting real in London

I'll save some time. Defo photoshop, look at the dark skinned hand? Guys and idiot. It can't be spread in the air.

    Carry on....

True but if someone sneezes or coughs in your face on a crowded carriage or bus - then you will most likley breath in droplets or have it all over your face. Hmmm?I think I'd go for the mask option tbh.

Maybe the guy in the photo is immunocompromised?

The latest James Bond film which was die to be released in April has being postponed for 7 months!

This is exactly why we shouldn't close borders. It'll ruin the economy and would be racialist too. Now movies too.

Italy playing out slightly differently regarding numbers.
    • First column = recovering in hospital
    • Second = Intensive care
    • Third = home isolation
    • Fourth = recovered
    • 5th = dead
    • 6th = Tested

Large variation by region but figures are frightening.

    Right few things from this.
    • Italians are testing a lot in most regions. Hence picking up community transmission. They are testing anyone with connections to infected regardless of symptoms. Fair play.
    • roughly 50 % of people who tested positive in the affected region are in hospital. Could be due to isolation could be due to needing care. Don't know.
    • ~7% in main affected regions are in intensive care.
    • What's interesting is you can see the testing base on which cases are detected so you can't dismiss this by saying sampling bias. i.e you are only looking at sick people.

    Any other analysis welcome?

What’s the big hullabaloo about Cheltenham going ahead or not ? Yes there will be a mass gathering of people but not one soccer match etc has been cancelled yet
Over 5 million people using tube in London daily etc
If you call off a sporting event or all mass gatherings then the whole country should be shutdown it’s all or nothing at that stage

U-turn with Boris on giving out information regards locations of cases.
Boris Johnson pledged the government will keep releasing information about the location of new coronavirus cases today after plans to throttle the release of details sparked uproar.

He used an appearance on UTV's This Morning to try to assuage fears, after the Department of Health and Social Care said it would 'no longer be tweeting information on the location of each new case'.

The move sparked criticism from people who wanted to know which areas to avoid to keep themselves and vulnerable relatives fit and well.

Pressed on this, Mr Johnson told Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby: 'I am with you and we are putting it all out there'.

He added: 'We are putting it out as far as we can, we want to over-communicate with the public.'

So far the advice from the HSE is if you come back from a hotspot and show symptoms - self isolate.

About two weeks ago all of this was unfolding in Italy. It's quite possible many people didn't know Italy was going to be bad and people continued on thinking China was the hotspot.

Also, the advice says self isolate if you show symptoms. They probably weren't showing symptoms til very recently and went out and about in their community and went to work and school.
