Tony Holohan (chief medical officer) " we see no implications for the St. Patricks Day parade and as things stand we don't envisage that situation changing".

There you go now. No implications. None.

On his head be it so

It really doesn't spread that easily. There have already been multiple cases on planes where it didn't spread to other passengers.

It seems to be spreading fairly easily and quickly in Italy. I still would prefer those flights be cancelled.

An influx of visitors during what can best be described as an epidemic, coming from the most heavily infected area in the contintent, for an already cancelled event (presumably to stop the spread of it), coming over to save money that they can't get refunded, and potentially putting hundreds or thousands of people here at risk.

    It is ridiculous.

Cancel the f**king flights. If nothing else it will put peoples minds at ease.

If the Spanish victim died on the 13 February, is that now the first autochthonous case in Europe ?
    That was well before than:
First Italian case - diagnosed on 20 February
First French case - showing symptoms from 13 February, and diagnosed on 25 February

Found some interesting work in progress on reconstructing the history of this epidemic.
    Full thread here:

    Key points:

a decent fraction (10/43) of sequenced viruses sampled after Feb 1 belong to a particular genetic lineage
This lineage contains viruses sampled from Germany, Switzerland, Finland, Italy, Brazil and Mexico
At the base of this lineage lies the sample Germany/BavPat1/2020. This was "patient 1" in Bavaria who was infected by a business colleague visiting from China.

Incredibly, it appears that this cluster containing Germany/BavPat1/2020 is the direct ancestor of these later viruses and thus led directly to some fraction of the widespread outbreak circulating in Europe today.

Professor Kingston Mills, School of biochemistry and immunology in Trinity thinks travel from regions with high numbers of cases should be limited to increase our chances of containing this. (Rte news)

Yeah I just think saying it that way will get peoples backs up. Just say you're still assessing the situation. Like we're really thinking about this and trying to make the best decision. Not... We can't see a single issue with a massive gathering of people during a global pandemic. (Yeah I said pandemic!)

It'll be postponed as there will be about 30 confirmed cases at that stage.

Interestingly, I don't think we are in a bad position here, as we are at the tail end of the virus, we can eliminate some of the mistakes the Italian's are making from our own end.

I think Harris alluded to cancelling paddy's day when he was referring to hard choices being made.

In an era of uncertainty, this is what you are pissed off about? :pac:

I'm pissed at anybody trying to take financial advantage of people in this situation, yes.

That's incorrect, they would have been tested here because they were in contact with another confirmed Coronavirus case, the same reason they were tested there.

I stand corrected, the article I read didn't mention the person they'd been in contact with was a confirmed case.

Six one news with the usual hysteria... "Two more coronavirus cases in Noerthern Ireland!!!"
    LiARS!!!

Here is the actual press release:
Testing of patients in Northern Ireland has resulted in two further presumptive positive results for coronavirus (Covid-19), bringing the total to three since testing began,” a Stormont Department of Health statement said.

    Key word is PRESUMPTIVE.

He obviously doesn't have the virus if it's not been reported in the media.. hope he gets better though.

He does not claim to have the virus.

He was told it could be a number of things based on where he travelled.

People pick up bugs all the time on holiday it looks like the HSE are just being carful testing people who are ill after holidays.

Can not blame the HSE for keeping this isolation testing unit hushed up.

On reflection I do believe Runaways and I also believe the HSE we have two confirmed cases.

We all went a bit nuts in the thread.

Currently 0.004% of the Italian population has it, confirmed at least. The chances of anyone on those flights having it is minuscule.

Get a message from a friend in the UAE saying they’re thinking of closing all schools by Sunday (that’s their equivalent of Monday btw) and funnily enough they have no alternatives to teaching from home despite saying “there WILL be alternatives” (according to him)

Saw that - apparently schools and colleges in UAE are closing for 4 weeks.

Sounds much better, like an 80's glam rock band. Greatest hits include:

    Locust Plagues.
    Global Pandemic.
    Jerusalem returned.
    Severe floods, fires and storms.
Internal destruction of the RCC (scandals)
Hoardes arriving from the MidEast to Europe
The fall of Rome, and the last Pope (PtR) falling ill.

Luckily we don't have any of that nonsense however :o

We will look back at the decision not to cancel the parade and heads will roll. Parts of Europe have effectively shut up shop and we still have a chance to contain this before it erupts altogether and what do we do, throw massive pointless parades up and down the country ensuring everyone spreads their germs all over the shop. The fact that livestock were treated with more respect back in the foot and mouth crisis than the most vulnerable here is actually depressing. But hey, there was money to be made from that market. Older people shouldn’t be seen as disposable collateral damage because they happen to be ill already.

They have to be sent off for double confirmation thats why presumptive til the second analysis confirms it - same happened with the first case

Of any individual maybe, but we have seen lots of examples of imported cases from Italy, so the chances of any import are not small.

Good point. Interesting to see what neighbours are doing. I heard that they've ploughed a sizeable chunk of their wealth via research globally in trying to combat low probability high impact pathogens like this one.

One difference is they have a **** load of money. They also have mandatory conscription so huge chuck of population can be called on if needed. They've reduced this in last 20 years but still a lot of people. They aren't part of EU but are part of EEA. Switzerland is very similar and likewise hasn't shut off borders.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwegian_Armed_Forces#Conscription

We might be just due a good cull. Global warming and all.

I'm guessing they have better knowledge of the virus than us as they have seen more cases first hand... or do we have the same amount of cases but not the resources to check it... the medical care over there has more in common with flying doctors while ours has more in common with one flew over the cuckoos nest
