Nothing. Only a minimal increase would be possible anyway. That's why it's critical we slow the spread of the virus as much as possible.

Is there actually anything being done to slow the spread of this virus?

Stay at home seems to be the advice given by the HSE. Do Irish hospitals have the equipment and hazmat suits to treat this?

Aldi released their line or virus attire including hazmat suits today

I wonder is that because they're worried about people not going to the cinema during the 'epidemic' (and possibly even cinemas being closed) or because the title might be seen as in bad taste?
Maybe the plot is about a virus outbreak?

Lots of planes spraying this afternoon, all you have to do is look up :)

None whatsoever, we use sacrificial doctors when dealing with infectious diseases

So infectious patients are passing it onto doctors and nurses?

I read an article that basically said that. The release date coincides with what the expected peak with be in the US and cinemas might be shut etc

Hopefully we get confirmed cases and it leads to St Patrick's day parads being postponed

There already have been confirmed cases in the Republic -2 of them. Still no plans to cancel the parades though which is ****ing crazy IMO.

Yeah but they knock off the doctors afterward so noone else can get it

In all fairness, a gym membership is probably the last thing on people's minds and businesses don't know what to do yet.

I read that it's not supposed to survive temperatures higher than 25/26 degrees, but if that were the case I doubt anyone would get infected or stay sick for long, considering that a human body temperature is more or less 37 degrees and that infected people develop a fever.

The studies haven't been done really but I'll explain a bit.

Viruses do better with heat when they have a host to feed on.

The studies have been done on sars and mers (both coronavirus) that there are points around that level where the virus survives for much less time outside a host. There's a point mid 20s where if you increase the temperature by 2 degrees sars will survive on steel for half as long as it will before increasing temperature.

No one really thinks that heat of 25/26 degrees will kill off the virus but they are hoping warmer weather (and hot weather) will reduce the transmisability of the virus and make the whole thing blow over somewhat.

When are the results of the 19 tests done today due?
According to the NVRL website, they have a turnaround time of 12 to 24 hours for a result.

If they only test a few people then they can keep the numbers of confirmed cases low for as long as possible. It seems they are following the american approach.
The Americans f*ucked up because the CDC rushed the production of their test kits and one of the reagents turned out to be faulty. All had to be fixed and redistributed which delayed their testing process. They're now facilitating testing in multiple labs across the country which should result in an increase in numbers.

The WHO approved testing kits for use that were manufactured in Germany (i think) but instead of the US using those, they stuck with their CDC ones.
    ixoy wrote:
What's the availability of testing kits.
It's all well and good looking to test loads of people but there's a limit to how many, both in the physical kit, the person to perform the test and the throughput capacity of an accredited lab.
I don't now about availability of kits. But other likely limitations are number of staff and hours in the day to provide testing.

The NVRL perform tests for the entire country. They still have to provide their routine services on top of the COVID testing.

Their routine hours are 8am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday. If COVID testing has to be provided around the clock and at weekends that will stretch the existing staff to capacity and burnout.

They have set up a drive through testing centre l just read today .
I'll repeat myself again...taking samples can be a quick process, they still have to be processed by the laboratories, which takes hours.

I'm no expert but I didnt think you could catch it as quick outside as you could inside...

Reading about the cab driver that may have it and was quarantined by the HSE(in his own house) was told to wear a mask inside but not outside

250 ICU Beds in IRELAND, anyone know what’s going on to increase this?

We can’t magic ICU beds (and trained staff) out of nowhere. The best way to quickly increase the availability of ICU beds will be to cancel all elective major surgery. So when that happens we’ll know we’re reaching breaking point.
As a last ditch effort we could possibly redeploy ventilators from operating theatre to take some of the strain, providing the staff are available.

Nobody knows for sure but there's a difference between surviving at 37 degrees in the body and the temperature it can stand outside the body which would be lower most likely.

Maybe it would be best if everyone caught it, that way travel wouldn't be restricted.

How is it we arent having a similar infection rate to other countries?

    Is it lack of testing?

People being convinced its only a cold so not reporting when mild symptoms appear (who arent tested i suppose if they havent travelled)

    Or just plain luck

    —fever (83% - 98%)
    —dry cough (76% -82%)
—fatigue or muscle aches (up to 45%)

all of which my young fella has had since saturday (putting it down to just illness) he hasn't been to any of the infected areas so just riding it out.

I’m sure the hassle of being told to self isolate would discourage most people unless they really had bad symptoms.

We've just passed 95k cases globally.

It will be less than two days before we pass 100k.

Lack of testing. One of the NI cases confirmed today wouldn't even have been tested here because he hadn't travelled to Italy or China.

40 times as much testing. Roughly 13 times as many people.

The U.K. are a bit ahead of us in the progress of their outbreak, so they have done a lot more tests per head of population as the infection is spreading in communities.
However, if you look at rates of confirmed v negative tests, our ratio is identical to the U.K., which would imply that we are on a par re testing. In fact if anything, given that there is confirmed local spread, they should probably be doing more testing.

Are people avoiding all air travel, or only to virus hot spots?

My brothers are going to Liverpool for their game at the weekend, and with a case confirmed there now I'm hoping they decide otherwise.

I'm sure they'd be fine, it's our mother I'd be worried about them passing them on to when they get back.

Am I overreacting or should I be insisting they stay home?

I was asked about Runaways yesterday and I have received an email from him today with pictures inside a HSE ward doing tests for the virus.

I would post the pictures but I have been told not to.

Edit I can provide proof to mods if asked but I will respect his wishes.

Just catching up on that thread. People are cynical ***** eh? Forgot to send you these.

Its a global fight against coronavius now.

Call off paddy's day ..not just here but worlwide (no-brainer to me anyways)

Stop all flights to and from Italy (at least thats where we should start )

Worry about the capitalists, insurers and solicitors and other (parasites) 's later.
Italy are closing down all schools and looking at much more.
It is the most heavily infected country in Europe, and we may have more than 5,000 of them coming over here in the coming days. Ludicrous that the match was cancelled and the flights bringing all of the people (the real worry) weren't.
Yet Harris says banning flights from Italy will not be effective.
I'd be willing to take the chance.
You can be pretty confident if there are a few with it getting on the plane, it will likely mean the majority of the plane is infected, getting off.
If people need to get home, have specific flights for them, and tell them that they need to contact an office, make that flight or stay there. When they arrive, quarantine, no bus or trains.

We knew it was coming, but do we really need to invite it in en masse?
