That sounds fair enough to me. If every Tom Dick and Harry came to A&E requesting to be tested because they thought they had it, it would be daft to entertain them all.

It's not a drive through service.

    But it could be...

Here's the article with the last update the HSE gave on the numbers tested - "The number of people who have been tested for the disease is now over 100"

And here's the bit on procurement - "Mr Reid said procuring essential equipment to protect against the virus had been a major challenge for the health service due to “volatility” in the market but adequate stocks were available."

Now he didn't specifically say they had trouble sourcing testing kits, but for me it's the only obvious reason why they'd have only done a fraction of the testing that other countries did (per capita).

    https://www.irishtimes.com/news/health/sourcing-equipment-to-protect-against-coronavirus-a-major-challenge-hse-1.4186892

Over 100, when there are at least 200, students known to have been in Italy since Christmas, they have families and there are other students in those schools, that should put us well over 1000 tests if not on the way to 10000 tests.

The northern Irish case should have put us at ~100 tests from the people on the plane alone.

HSE is saying you need to be in contact with someone infected for 15 mins while other countries are saying you need to have touched an object that someone infected has touched within the last day.

So without knowing precisely what the danger is, would you say it's time for our viewers to crack each other's heads open and feast on the goo inside?

I think it means it's not linked to another existing case they know about....but I could be wrong.

Edit...looks like novel just means new.
    So coronavirus in humans

She's at home looking after her kids. If she weren't some would be demanding to know why she wasn't.

It's part of the name of the coronavirus, which is novel.

Who should be tested for COVID-19?
People who fit the ‘case definition’ of a possible case of COVID-19 should be tested for COVID-19.

According to the Irish case definition, a possible case ofCOVID-19 is someone who has
possible exposure to a person with confirmed COVID-19 AND respiratory symptoms, as explained below:

    1. Possible exposure to a person with confirmed COVID-19:
In the 14 days before the start of your symptoms you:

    Were in close contact with a case of COVID-19;
    OR
Were in an area with presumed ongoing community transmission of COVID-19
    OR
Worked in or attended a health care facility where patients with COVID-19 were being treated
    AND

    2. Respiratory symptoms

Have a severe acute respiratory infection that needs to be treated in hospital and where your symptoms or radiology (x-ray/scan) results suggest that you have pneumonia or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
    OR
Have acute respiratory infection of any degree of severity including at least one of the following: fever, cough, shortness of breath
    OR
Have fever of unknown cause with no other symptoms

So reading the instructions to health care professionals a person should be tested if they

1 Have had contact with a confirmed case
    2 Have symptoms

This seems to be consistent with the person I'm aware of. No confirmed contact with a case therefore no test.

I do actually agree with you but I'm somewhat mixed or somewhere in between on it. I'd entertain the idea that we should be testing everyone with a temperature.

The US just don't want to look extremely stupid as each day goes on they can hardly test anyone properly (so their suspect cases numbers would look pretty terrible in a few days time) meanwhile the Koreans have done tens of thousands and have some automated testing spots.

If you want to accuse someone of lieing please present evidence of your claims.

Various people have clarified that this is hse on this thread.

Keep it up. Did the HSE announce officially that they refused to test the Italian presenting with flu symptoms?

They do that all the time don't they?

Various people told me it was " policy"

Not according to WHO nor the tweet above.
The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) said that public health officials are operating in "uncharted territory" as they combat the spread of the novel coronavirus, which has infected more than 90,000 people across 73 countries and territories as of Monday evening.

Same, and I'll be the first person to say it's probably just something minor but there's a tiny chance it isn't and the HSE are refusing to test.

Seems a strange set up, you'd think anyone with such bad respiratory symptoms would be checked asap to rule it in or out. Are we the same here that HSE would have to ok it? Or can the clinicians order the test themselves?

I agree with you that it is nobody's business. I posted on this thread yesterday that it was a disgrace that the newspapers were naming a politician, and I didn't name her in that post.

What I didn't realise was that she was self-promoting it on Twitter with a video to politically capitalise on the situation. As she has put it out there, it is fair comment.

Regardless of whether he knew the result of test beforehand, what kind of parent would think it's a good idea to let him out and about until he had the all clear?

I'm increasingly finding a lot of people do not have a clue about the virus.

Seeing as how William and Catherine have just arrived on their royal visit to Ireland can we presume they have been/are being thoroughly tested for the virus?

Smart lady. WHO are asking us to aggressively contain the virus.
HSE are organising infection parties and band practise..

I'd be far from a supporter of Leo or FG, but the only ones getting into a panic are those on social media and threads like this.

Most people are (rightly!) just going about their day and taking a few extra precautions like washing their hands more than normally or not booking a weekend getaway to places like Milan.

It's the current fearmongering and posting of any and every report on this from anywhere in the world that will create a real panic. I know that most people here are concerned and trying to be helpful and informative, but everyone needs to take a step back and assesss the situation.

    - 1 confirmed case in the Republic
    - who may have gone to band practise (personally I'd blame the parents before the HSE)
    - Updates are being issued (not helped by the confusing mess of rumor and speculation rampant on social media)

    That's it so far!

That's a nice quick way of taking samples from people.

What happens then when tens of thousands samples arrive at the NVRL to be processed.

Those that may be actually infected may have to wait days or weeks for results.

I don't think people fully understand the testing process. It's not like a pregnancy test with instant results then and there.
