I feel it is getting worst than China (and definitely worst than Korea or Italy). The government and health authorities there just have no clue about the scale of the epidemic.

Do you think US sanctions have contributed to the rapid spread in Iran?

You obviously have no idea how logistically impossible this would be.

I'm going to look into getting a home oxygen supply for my mom, she's over 80, had several chest infections, pneumonia, pleurisy... I know if there is a surge in cases in Ireland and she gets it, our local hospital which always has patients on trolleys in casualty, will be overwhelmed. Anyone else in a similar position? I don't know how else I can prepare. It's nothing to worry about until that elderly statistic is a member of your own family and you don't want to watch them die on a trolley in a chaotic overcrowded hospital.

We should involve the lay community but keep them at a distance

    How much of a distance?

And the graphic, apparently thats 4km to scale vs the size of the earth!

    Got to love The Express.

Or people applaud our desire to put public health and safety first and people think "wow, ireland really care about their people. We should visit there sometime".

This virus is going to spread whether we have a St.Patricks Day parade or not. It would be better to be sick with a job to go back to than sick with no job to go back to.

Because ireland (republic) cannot dictate wether Belfast stays open, there are boats arriving every day with cargo, passenger ferries also have to run to export goods. Do you ban Irish citizens from returning? Its idiotic and impossible to implement

Doctor *⚕️ on David McWilliams podcast said everything is grand and that media is making everyone panic for no reason

There's a consistent trend with qualified medical professionals saying we should be vigilant but there's no reason to panic, vs random people with no qualifications on twitter saying we're all doomed.

It's the absolute inverse of the climate crisis where the experts continually tell us that we should be very, very worried, and nobody can be arsed taking it seriously.

Close the airports and the ports. Stop all imports of food and medicine.

    Makes sense.

Would they possibly use the lad as a case study whilst the time and resources are in place to check him for everything?

I don't know but it's possible. He may not be the best example when younger people seem to be recovering better than the elderly and those with other conditions.

The rate of spread is important too, we want to flatten the curve so we don't get a surge of all serious cases presenting at once and overwhelming the health service.
10000 serious cases over 3 months is more manageable than 10000 cases over 3 weeks.

St Patrick's Day parade, given the numbers in close proximity and spread of visitors, is an event with super spreading potential.

Closing airports is overkill, stopping flights from Italy fine, but not to close everything.

I have a trip planned for the end of the month and still intend on travelling. Not to Italy I might add.

I am off to Tennerife (Adeje as it happens, diff hotel about 1 km away from the quarantined hotel) in 10 days and I am heading to Dublin this weekend.

Should either place become an official no travel zone by the DoH, then I won't travel and my travel insurance will cover me (obviously not for the Dublin trip).

There will be plenty of hand washing on route, but apart from that not much else to be done really...

You would assume this is the same existing case with the letter dated as yesterday and no new cases yesterday

HSE have said it's the same case.

HSE band letter was a hoax apparently

Who are these idiots compiling these fake letters and fake WhatsApps? What a sad life they must lead. Utterly pathetic to think of someone laughing away to themselves thinking they’re a gas bastard. Too much time on their hands.

Watching Claire Byrne last night and some industries like tourism almost asking for government handouts/ compensation already due to loss of earnings.I mean what the hell, govs. and health authorities around the world are trying to control the spread of a new virus and some people bleating on about their profit margins.Yes of course it’s dreadful for business but seriously it’s about stopping the spread now.

They’re not “bleating”. These are real issues. If you have to disrupt an economy, you’d need to have contingencies to support those sectors.

Many areas of the economy work on tight margins and can unravel very quickly with serious consequences that could also cause a lot of hardship.

If you disrupt supply chains so badly that food or medicines stop arriving, you could cause deaths.

At the end of the day, Ireland’s an island and we are highly dependent on air transport and so on.

So, while it’s extremely important to stop the spread of Coronavirus we also can’t just stop the global economy to achieve that without very serious consequences.

What exactly do you propose that the tourism and other very highly impacted sectors do? They have staff to pay, overheads, and simply will not survive if they’re not given a lifeline in the event of very serious disruption.

You could be talking about tens of thousands of job losses, rising poverty and all sorts of issues if there’s disruption without adequate contingency in place.

This throwing accusations of “greed” at any sector that points out its vulnerable is absolute nonsense.
