    Yes, but there is a time lag for symptoms to appear, testing, etc., etc.

    I suspect there are many more than 2 people on this island with the virus!

    I cannot see how it is possible to even estimate, much less count, the number of cases. If I am to believe that most people who get infected will experience few, if any, symptoms, how are the ‘authorities’ going to know about these cases? The only cases that can be counted are where people have been tested and proved positive for the virus. Unless you test the entire population, it is not possible to say how widespread the virus is.
    It is quite possible that there are hundreds of thousands of people who have been infected and are unknowingly spreading the virus. How could anyone possibly know?

    Lads, this it's only in Italy where we will be having issues from is nonsense.

    I'm in Frankfurt airport at the moment, I had to for work.

    Swear every 5th person is near coughing up a lung.

    I just keep moving areas.

    This is really serious.I know it was before people are dying, but it will be very widespread all across our place soon I'd say.

    Only a handful of people I've seen with masks.

    I'm not trying to scaremonger

    Just I got a fright myself with how prevalent it is here.

    I work in Frankfurt from Monday to Thursday and on my trip into work this morning on the underground not one person coughed and nobody was wearing a mask.

    Hand sanitizer doesn't kill all viruses. Has anyone actually came out and said that the sanitizer beside the talcom powder in centra will kill the Corona virus?

    You can sanitize all you like but if someone flies in from an infected area and is in close contact with your good self you might pick up the virus.

    Telling people that they have some kind of control or defence is to stop the masses panicking.

    There is no vaccine, the virus is spreading.
    Close the airports or else expect infection to spread.

    Has anybody come out and said that it wouldn't? Sorry, but the good personal hygiene message is still as relevant as ever (and not just with this virus).

    When people are talking about serious cases requiring ventilation do they mean supplemental oxygen or life support? I only realised there was a difference when my baby was in ICU And people asked was he intubated.

    Getting really sick of the bad news tbh, wish I could just hibernate for 3 months ..

    its like death by 1000 cuts...

    Agreed.

    The more I see WHO conferences, the more I think they are actually trying to manage panic but at the same time urge countries to get their houses in order before it gets too bad. On the surface it sounds kinda positive but when you scratch deeper it’s really about preparing for the inevitable outbreak that won’t end civilisation but will be harder to manage, the less prepared counties and individuals are for a period of significant disruption.

    From the way our own authorities have started ramping things up it gives me hope and Dread. Hope, that they are going to do everything they can to fight this disease. Dread , that regardless it’s going to be some very hairy couple of months ahead. I’ve been expecting this for weeks and been trying to mentally prepare myself for what’s coming but like Dr Bruce Alylward and WHO said yesterday, you can’t be fully ready for this, even the most advanced countries are not ready for this and are struggling to manage it. Our authority’s can’t be fully prepared for this because it’s a constantly changing situation and it’s kind of chaotic. So mistakes will be made, let’s try to cut them some slack as they try to come to grips with this thing.

    I'll have to listen to it later as I've a meeting any min but if anyone wants to fill in the context of their analysis, I'd like to hear it.

    sure in reality there’s no precautions you can take- we need positivity and a healthy dose of reality and adherence to facts - kill the hysteria and anxiety..

    people posting here that they’re observing people in airports sniffling and spluttering... well sorry for the diagnosis but that’s called anxiety people and when that festers it’s bordering on mild paranoia!

    Im not making light of this but I’m blue in the face trying to point out to people 30,000 + people have died from influenza this winter and not a word about it or a picture on social media of one of them poor people.

    It’s business as usual as far as I’m concerned.

    Have you pointed out to people the percentage of people who get flu that die versus the likely figure if they get corona?

    You diagnosed all those people as having Covid-19 by watching them cough? Seriously how is this crap allowed to be posted in here. You are 100% trying to be a scaremonger or else you are completely paranoid about this whole thing.

    Yes his pope mobile seems to be driving on the wrong (right lane) side of the roads around Italy, thankfully though everyone else seems to be doing the same....

    I believe the numbers in China atm, the level of detail they are doing to track people and their health status is incredible really. They have an app on their phone and are given colour codes to indicate their health status. That data is shared with police and their movements restricted accordingly.

    The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes from October 2019 through February 22, 2020 there have been 35 million cases of seasonal influenza, with 300,000 hospitalizations, and approximately 30,000 deaths.

    Big numbers in South Korea today.

    Yup IMO its a good one to monitor as:
    * High numbers (from a statistical point of view)
    * High testing (well higher than other some other countries - still skewed towards at risk folks)
    * Population is approx 10 times that of Ireland so you can divide by 10 if you want to estimate what a similar outbreak here would be like...

    Todays Stats:
    * Population: 51 Million
    * Known Cases: 5,186 (0.01% of population)
    * Deaths: 34 (0.66% of known cases and 0.00007% of pop)
    * Critical: 11
    * Serious: 34
    * Recovered: 26

    Note: Recovered will always take a lot longer to report than death...

    And if it behaves like the flu, it will probably spread very fast indeed. A person with only very mild symptoms of the virus is still a carrier and can infect others. A common myth surrounding the flu is that saying "oh you would know if you had the flu, you would be floored". If one looks at the studies, an average of just 23% exhibit severe symptoms that would leave one sick. Its why it spreads so fast when the majority are up and around (and spreading flu) thinking they 'only' have a common cold.
