I've had a mild flu the last week and a half. From galway haven't been anywhere bar work.

Is there a common flu going around anyway at the moment?

    You mean tracing?

Think the poster means companies who's staff visited google have their own companies contacting them.

    Seems like complete overkill

Two British students coming back from holiday in Cambodia were put into quarantine after one asked for paracetamol and an upgrade because she was hungover on the flight from Singapore to London. I'm sure they've recovered by now.

Seeing as there isn’t any confirmed case of corona this seems unnecessary.
Google are having a drill. Simply

That makes no sense unless it's a confirmed case.

Or the poster means they are just contacting them to stay at home?

I don't know what he means.

No pain.* I’ve been pretty lucky in general on that score.

But I wouldn’t be devastated if I caught coronavirus.

*comparatively speaking. Bone weakness and soreness is ever present though because of permanent damage

    I see they've clarified above.
Told people to stay at home who've been into google for meetings etc.

Makes absolutely no sense given its being reported they dont think its covid and google saying it's being used as a business continuity test

Ireland's health care system is just above bottom placed Ukraine according to the HealthCare Index. The index is an estimation of the overall quality of the health care system, health care professionals, equipment, staff, doctors, cost etc.

Worst or second worst in many categories.
That's not an attack on your goodself now mind.

That's the reality. Spin doesn't cut it. Aren't we all complaining about it 52 weeks of the year. All of a sudden under potential pandemic conditions what exactly will change.

This is the HealthCare Index published by Numbeo?

    Their website states:

"This section is based on surveys from visitors of this website. Questions for these surveys are similar to many similar scientific and government surveys."

Questions may be similar but how similar are the various polling quality procedures such as weighting. And self selected sampling is not a method by used by any reliable research organisation.

And it's not like Paddy isn't noted for a "grass is greener" attitude.

Yeah let's do nothing and end up like Wuhan then the (supposed) front line worker will be working 18 hour shifts instead of 13 and never see his kid instead of for an hour.

    Sure it'll be grand.

Hmmm. First result when on a google search "Ireland health service ranking". https://www.joe.ie/fitness-health/ireland-placed-pretty-high-new-global-healthcare-system-ranking-588830

Here was me expecting to see nothing but bad news.

It seems that epidemiology and statistics are not strong points here. I’ll explain the maths and conclusions in fuller detail going from USA to Ireland and then vice versa.

The US has approx 300 million people and has 36,000 deaths per year from flu. This equates to 120 deaths from flu per million people. So for 5 million Americans there are 600 deaths from flu.

Ireland has roughly 5 million people and has 120 deaths per year from flu.

The difference in those two numbers, 480 dead people per 5 million citizens is the number of people who die in America for that population size per year from flu vs Ireland.

The reason, I believe, and there is much evidence to support this on pubmed ( a database of published research) is that those 480 people die largely due to limited access to quality healthcare by people who are without or with only poor quality healthcare in America.

This confusion over some very simple statistics and maths is also part of the reason why information flow is managed and presented in manageable chunks. Most people are simply not trained or experienced to manipulate epidemiological data and draw the correct conclusions. Sending out the raw data ASAP would lead to people doing the sums wrong, drawing the wrongs conclusions and great problems.

I am not posting this to have conflict with any posters but simply to elucidate the maths behind the statements I made.

As a country Ireland will do better than the vast majority of the world due to our healthcare system. Also when we count the death toll at the end there will be a significant portion of doctors and nurses there because they stayed at their posts to care for people with Coronavirus instead of scaremongering. If necessary I’ll be one of them.

You might consider thinking about that, calming down and allowing us to do our jobs and help you and those you care about if and when you become ill.

    With respect.
You said if Ireland had the same population as the USA we would have 600 deaths per year, which is five times the number you gave as our flu deaths, so it implies Ireland has one fifth the population of the USA.

You then revised that to say 600 was the number of deaths the USA would have if it had the population of Ireland. Which would be ok but you did it in the guise of explaining something to people who didn't understand, instead of acknowledging your error.

Ranked by a self selected sample of "customers" who happened upon that website.

To be fair, a significant proportion of the "doom and gloom" as you put it, was the concern that we won't have enough ventilation equipment to cope, resulting in a spike of deaths. We have a HSE consultant confirming that this is likely. Seems the concern was justified and highlights the need to do absolutely everything we can to slow this down.

No country has enough ventilation to cope with a widespread epidemic. Expecting it is just typical Irish entitlement.

From what I've seen there seems to be a couple of "bugs" going around since Christmas. There was the one around Christmas/New year which for the people I knew who had it would have them crapping themselves now as far as symptoms go; fever, headache, no upper respiratory involvement(no snotters out the nose) and a cough which took ages to feck off. Actually one mate of mine and his family who had it, have in the last ten days got another dose that's similar. That dose didn't seem to affect all. So in the above family of five three got it, one quite bad, but two appeared to get nada. Like I say if it were this week... I know a couple of others with common cold type doses too and one with what defo appears to be flu(rapid onset, utterly fecked take to the bed).

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.
