Social media is a ****ing curse.

Absolutely! My mother lives in Offaly and she texted me earlier to say ‘it’s on the internet that we have it here’

There are portions of contracts in the HSE for Consultants which state that if you want to talk to the media etc you need to get clearance from management and your Clinical Director not only to speak but also about what you are going to say. Not doing this can result in disciplinary action and firing. You can be certain to prevent scaremongering that the HSE is insisting that everything go through their media office. This is NOT the same as a cover-up. It is simply prudent information management allowing checking of info and accuracy before release. Call of coverups is real scaremongering and unwarranted.

I don't think any reasonable person is saying it's a cover up. My sense though is that the Irish public would like to be treated like adults and not kids. The public should be fully informed and in a position to make their own judgement as to socialising, education, work & travel etc. There's a bit of a paternalistic streak in the Irish health system, good and all as it may be, that is counter productive.

A perhaps incomplete analogy would be for Met Eireann only to tell some communities of a storm heading their way and keeping the rest in the dark.

Know a couple in their mid 60s who just returned from skiing in Northern Italy the other day. The wife currently has a temp, they got in touch with the HSE who didn't seem concerned since their resort wasnt in the current quarantine zone however their airport deffinitely is one thats been affected but the HSE dont seem to think that is an issue......

I don’t know, but the two more used airports for those going skiing are Malpensa and Bergamo I think.

Yeah, sorry, that post was a bit cryptic.
The poster was implying that everyone who passes through an airport in northern Italy should be tested. Complete over reaction.

Interesting to hear from the Irish press conference that they think close contact with a stranger is not as risky as they first though i.e. sitting beside someone.

They now think it's inter-family or from touching surfaces infected with the virus.

Wow. One of the cases that stood out for me early on was when a superspreader had visited a jewellers not sure where perhaps Italy or South Korea and passed it onto one of the shop assistants. I wonder if something like that could have been from touching where he had just been.

I don't care if they are or are not a consultant, the post was informed and balanced. If as you say, anyone can write, off you go and write a balanced and informed post. If you can't, that's not a problem, just don't knock others for doing so.

With that said let’s just be clear on this. Coronavirus is going to spread through the population in Ireland and most of the world - hence it being a pandemic. It will have a 1-2% mortality but in Ireland and the UK our health services will function far better than in most of the world, including America. You’ll be amazed at how badly America will do and the per capita death rate there compared to here. Eg. They lose 36,000 to flu every year. Ireland loses 120 (roughly). If we had the same population as them we should have about 600 flu deaths a year. We don’t because we have a good public health care system vs the shambles in America.

Coronavirus will spread, it will cause deaths in Ireland and it will drag on into 2021. It is not, however, the apocalypse people seem to be fearing.

Hand wash with soap and hot water, don’t go to huge gatherings and if you think you might have it phone your GP and follow their advice. Being histrionic and engaging in conspiracy theories won’t help, will actively make this worse and will make the jobs of doctors like myself and my nursing colleagues harder.

I’m a Consultant in the Irish health care system.

This post should be a Sticky in the Resources Thread

Yeah most of the multinationals have plans in place for all such events. Although it's very inconvenient to them and will cost them money, they'll survive. Their employees in Ireland will be well looked after as well in terms of salary

It's the small/medium businesses you'd fear for if mandatory closures became a thing but I'm optimistic we won't get there.

Yeah I've seen the articles they say nearly all staff bar close contacts will be back in the office Wednesday.

It's out of caution while the person with flu like symptoms gets tested but as the articles say it's not suspected they have it.
