You can talk about 1 million cases if you like but the fact is we still only have one case after X amount of weeks.

1 case we actually know about, could be a few walking about at this stage

We may easily have more and from the experience in Italy it can grow very quickly.

I'd say the last place to be is in a hospital as this takes off.

If I’m gonna get it I’d want to be one of the first as resources wouldn’t be stretched.

But I’m not gonna get it as I live in Leitrim and this county doesn’t exist :P

Italy only had 1 case after x amount of weeks. Now they've 2000 plus 10 days later.

I wonder are flu cases declining with everyone washing their hands and being more careful?

This thing could actually save lives.

    https://www.rte.ie/news/coronavirus/2020/0302/1119619-covid-19-blog/
A Consultant Gastroenterologist at Tallaght University Hospital has defended the Department of Health's approach not to release the name of the school involved for patient confidentiality reasons.

Dr Anthony O'Connor told RTÉ's Drivetime the main concern of public health doctors is that a person who has symptoms of Covid-19 feels confident enough to present themselves to health authorities.

He said people "need to trust that when they do present, that their information will be treated in confidentiality."

Dr O'Connor said, while Covid-19 is "too young to know", people are often reluctant to inform doctors of symptoms because they are afraid that they will have to disclose "who they were with, and what they were doing."

He added that "it is a good precedent that the Department has set, that "we're going to handle your data on a need-to-know basis."

would letting it be known you travelled by taxi make you hesitate reporting your illness
would letting it known your school make you hesitate in reporting your illness?

Yes it could. I'm might but hasn't so far. I'm optimistic

Incredible we've tested so few people. It's almost like they don't want to find any cases.

Maybe it's because they, unlike any of us, are the experts in this field.

Does anyone seriously believe there is some kind of cover up? What would be the point? Look at the furore around the one confirmed case in the State. If there was another case how do you think they would cover it up? These are real people who are caught up in this and their access to social media and the like cannot be controlled by the State. If there are more cases out there it will of course come out and any cover up would be exposed and everyone would lose credibility

I guess that does not satisfy the conspiracy theorists but equally I guess nothing will

You would wonder if people are actully doing this?
I think they would rater buy face masks and keep them in the cupboard.

Or that testing kits are scarce and need to be used on suspected cases only. Not every randomer with a sniffle.

Point still valid. There is no way there is only 1 case in Ireland.

ridiculous comment to make. A number of elderly people are very anxious about this and I can certainty understand why

Yes of course people should be concerned about this virus.

It's a separate point though, thousands of cases in the first few weeks of the year and little to no coverage. 3 times the number already in 8 weeks than the whole of last year.

But yes probably for another thread

    There's plenty of head cases.

How do you know we’ve tested so few? Testing figures are released weekly on Tuesdays

Expect that to be very different after tomorrows update given the criteria was expanded last week

How on earth do you know?

(and to be clear I do not know either way). I can speculate, you can speculate, but you cannot know (unless perhaps you have it yourself)

They said they had problems with procurement recently. They were probably referring to test kits.

It's not a conspiracy theory. The numbers are available to us. They did a small fraction of the number of tests that Scotland did.
Scotland has experts in this field also. Are you saying they over tested?

I've no doubt that a lot of people are being more hygienic but there's some scruffy bastard's out there that never did and never will wash their hands after using the toilet and will cough all over the place.

Nobody is safe from these scruff bags

Farmers co-op here still has loads of ffp3 masks. 15 euro for a pack of three, which is a good price. Got PPE on special offer last month too.

Don't know for sure. But at the rate it spreads and the flights are coming from Italy I'd say it's highly unlikely to be isolated.

The US now has 92 and 2 deaths - they had 14 cases on 12th of Feb.

Many other EU countries that have far higher rates of travel with Norhern Italy than us also have low confirmed numbers.
